NFT: Weirdest Yankee games you've seen

Ron from Ninerland : 5/16/2022 3:37 pm
Yesterday the Reds pitched a no-hitter ... and lost. This is a rare occurrence but in its shadow the White Sox pitched a 2 hitter against the Yankees and not only lost, but lost badly. Losing a 2 hitter is unusual but the Yankees over the years have had some strange games. Here are two of the strangest I'm familiar with. In both cases the Oakland A's were the opponent.

1977: Vida Blue pitches 9 1/3 no hit innings against the Yanks ... and eventually lost.

This was weird for a number of reasons. This was Ron Guidry's first or second start. Vida Blue started and the Yankees uncharacteriscally got to him for 2 runs in the first. After that he pitched 9 1/3 no hit innings before finally being lifted in the 11th inning. On the other side, Guidry pitched 8 shutout innings before faltering in the 9th and giving up 2 runs to tie it. Sparky Lyle, normally their closer came in and pitched SEVEN INNINGS and eventually got the win.

1988: Neil Allen's "Complete Game Shutout"

I was at the stadium for this one ! A preamble in in order here. In 1917 Babe Ruth started a game for the Red Sox, walked the first batter, got into it with the umpire and got tossed. He was relieved by Ernie Shore. The baserunner was caught stealing and Shore proceeded to retire the next 26 batters. At the time he was credited with a perfect game although much later on the scoring rules were changed.

Fast forward to this game. Al Leiter was the starting pitcher. The first batter struck Leiter with a line drive and got a base hit. Leiter had to leave. Neil Allen relieved and finished the game without giving up a run. Using the Ruth/Shore precedent he was credited with a complete game/shutout at the time.

April 13, 1978. After Reggie's tremendous performance in the '77 WS they named a candy bar after him and gave one to everyone in attendance. My buddies and I played hooky from law school (hey, it was spring of our third year) and went to the game. Reggie hits a HR his first time up and tens of thousands of Reggie Bars were promptly hurled onto the field. It was surreal!

the wildest game I've ever seen was the comeback in Fenway in 2012
Greg from LI : 5/16/2022 4:01 pm : link
Freddie Garcia started and had nothing, getting pounded for five runs in the first two innings before being yanked. The Sox scored two more in the third and then again in the 5th. It was 9-0. The Yankees had managed only three hits in those five innings against Felix Doubront and there were two outs in the 6th when Tex hit a solo homer to end the shutout. The next two innings saw the Yankees score 7 runs in each, destroying the Sox bullpen. Final score, 15-9.

You can almost write a book about Boston relief pitchers who found a way to lose to the Yankees, and otherwise mediocre Yankee players becoming heroes.

Remember Felix Heridia, aka "The Run Fairy" ? One game against the Red Sox he came in the bases loaded, nobody out and got out of it without a run. I believe this was the same game Jeter jumped into the stands. I forget the name of the reliever who served up the winning hit to, of all people John Flahretty .

In 1985 I was at another game at the stadium where Boston blew a lead to send a game into extras. Lance McCullers, who was normally terrible started the 10th and walked the bases loaded but somehow got out of the inning without giving up a run. In the bottom half Boston returned the favor by loading the bases. They bought in Bob Stanley to pitch to Willie Randolph. I distinctly remember every Boston fan got up and left at that moment. The first three pitches weren't even close. He then threw one that looked to me to be right down broadway. Ball 4. Yankees win. The Ump admitted after the game he may have missed the call.

LTIsTheGreatest : 5/16/2022 4:15 pm : link
Joe Niekro started for Yanks and didnt make it through the first inning. Sox jumped out to 8-1 lead after 2. Yanks chipped and chipped and chipped away cut it to 8-7 heading to the 9th. Butch Wynegar and Willie Randolph lead off the 9th with singles. I figured, what a comeback win this is gonna be. Dale Berra then failed twice to sacrifice, but with 2 strikes singled to left, but Wynegar gets thrown out at the plate trying to score. Then Rickey Henderson walked to load the bases bringing up Mattingly. He gets jammed and hits fly to right too shallow to score the tying run. 2 out. Winfield grounds out. Game over. I couldnt beleive it! Yanks scored 7 runs, had 15 hits and 8 walks in the game and still lost!

I was at that game too! I was a kid and I LOVED Reggie. He was the reason I was a Yankee fan. I know the Reggie bar got a bad rap (teammates made fun of it), but I liked it. There was no way I was tossing my Reggie Bar on the field.

Years later, I was at Reggie Jackson day, when they retired his number and the gave out new, limited edition Reggie Bars. Again, I wasn't giving mine up, but somewhere along the line, my plan to preserve it went astray.

As an aside, my first piece of sports memorabilia, in a very limited collection, was a baseball from Reggie. I wanted to invite him to my Bar Mitzvah, but my parents never did. However, my mom had a colleague who was involved with some organization/charity he was the celebrity spokesperson for. So, for my Bar Mitzvah in 1985, she gave me a 1983 WS ball (odd, because he did not play in that WS), signed by Reggie, wishing me a Happy Bar Mitzvah. I still have it.

I was at that 1985 game. McCullers didnt come to the Yanks till 1989 in the Jack Clark trade. That 1985 game I remember Yanks trailing 4-3 and Mike Pagliarulo hit a game tying homer in the 7th inning. Bob Stanley did walk in the winning run in the 9th. I remeber the 3-0 pitch was right down the middle and Stanley went ballistic, charging right at the ump and screaming.

Down 3-0 in the 6th, one out, White singles, Munson walks, Reggie singles, Roy White scores with Munson holding weat 2b. Pinella comes to the plate and it just feels like they're going to bust out. Lou lines one weakly to b the SS side of 2b and it looks from our vantage point that it's going to get through. Not to be. Russell catches the line drive at his knees, but dropped it. Both Munson and Jackson froze. Russell recovered, stepped on 2nd to force Reggie, and threw wild to first. Munson came around to score, Pinella to 2b. Then all hell broke lose as Lasorda comes out yelling. That went on for a few minutes. We didn't know what happened until we got home and saw the replays on the late news. Reggie, hung up due to the line drive, sorta kinda "threw" his hip into the throw to first from Russell. It was borderline interference. Crazy play. Munson doubled in the 8th to tie it, and Pinella had a two out single in the 10th to win it. Yanks never looked back. I will never forget not knowing why the Dodgers were so upset on that play

My buddy and I had just graduated college and we went to a ton of games that year, would sit in the main reserves near HP for like $10 and drink beer and eat peanuts all night. Back in those days there wasn't much to root for but we had Pascual Perez and the way he jumped around on the mound like a nut he was fun to watch and was a pretty good pitcher the rare times he was healthy. Friday night we were excited to see him pitch vs the Brewers. He pitches to one batter and walks off the mound with a bum shoulder. Eric Plunk comes in he could throw like 150mph but straight as an arrow so he'd give up long bombs if he didn't walk 4 guys in a row first. Somehow he pitches like 5 great innings. We're down 2-0. Roberto Kelly smokes a single in the eight to score Steve Sax who only scored because he was the fastest guy on the team. Then coked up Steve Howe pitched a scoreless 9th and Jessie Barfield hits a walk off bomb in the bottom. The stadium (all like 18,000) was rocking. On the concourses on the way out everyone was chanting Jessie! Jessie! Like we just won the WS. Back in those days it was as close as we'd get...

I think Howe holds a record even more unbreakable than DiMaggio's. 8 or 9 coke busts and they still didn't ban him from the game. Not only that , he got a commissioner fired along they way.

on steal attempt to give A's the lead in top of the ninth, as Munson's throw to 2B tails into right center and the OF can't get it back in time.

The YS crowd gets on Thurman (who is in the middle of an MVP season) hard as he goes back to the dugout and then again when he comes to the plate in bottom of the ninth.

Thurman responds with, as Murray Chass put it, "a series of obscene reactions" during his AB and then on way back to dugout after striking out.

A different time, when the crowd around home plate was packed with average fans rather than corporate zombies. And when a blow up could be forgotten the next day.

Some good quotes from Billy ("Maybe they deserved the finger") and Sparky Lyle.

it was last year. LAA at NYY. Two rain delays. Yankees take a big lead early. Chapman gives up the tie and later Luetge gives up the lead. It ends with a loss in extra innings. I spent either 7 or 8 hours in Yankee Stadium and spent way too much on concessions, getting back to my hotel by about 2 AM. I will never forget the connection felt between us diehards on the subway ride downtown. Honestly, the communal lament of that subway car made it all worth it. Only sports would do that.

Course one wasnt "weird" really - it was winner take all game 5 of the ALCS where George Brett hit a 3-run homer in the top of the ninth to tie and Chambliss took the first pitch and won it for the home team. We made it to the field but like 15 minutes after the game and were quickly ushered off by NY finest on horse back - so I guess it was a little weird.

But not as weird as when I was like 8 or 9 years old and Jake Gibbs scored the winning run on a passed ball (could of been a wild pitch.. ) and Why that was weird is Jake Gibbs could barely run - was shocking even at the time.

Jeter head first dive into the stands vs Boston.

The game had everything. It was also the only game to my knowledge that A-Rod played shortstop for the Yankees, in relief of Jeter being taken out of after the dive.

Yanks were trailing the Angels 8-0 and Frank Tanana was pitching a 2 hit shutout going into the 9th when the Yanks bat suddenly and unexpectedly awakened as they scored 8 runs in the 9th inning to tie it. Might have even won it if Mickey Rivers hadnt gotten picked off to end the inning. Angels went on to win 11-8 in extras but what an amazing comeback. Ive actually been trying to find this game on Youtube but no such luck

It was a great..... of course the Royals won the protest. Of course no Yankee fan I knew liked George Brett. It was a great rivalry in its day.

I saw that on TV. I hated Brett, but I respected the hell out of him. Balls out, big time gamer.
I was at a Yankees game at Camden Yards the night the NY Rangers won…

… the cup vs Vancouver (?). The Yankees scored about 12 runs in the first three innings. By the 5th inning the only folks left in Camden Yards were Yankees fans / New Yorkers (but probably close to 20K people). Every 3rd TV in the concourse was turned to the hockey game. I was watching some of it from my seat with binoculars. Huge roars would go up from the crowd whenever the Rangers did something good. It was funny to hear such load cheers even though there was nothing happening on the field. The climax was when the hockey game was over and the Rangers had won the cup. The place went nuts. Even though I’m a Caps fan it was a fun night to be with all the NYY / NYR fans. A Yankee blowout victory over the O’s coupled with all the joy of the Rangers fans made it a weird and memorable night.

I was at that game but i was 6 years old. Still remember it like yesterday. WILD
