I can't stand that band either but I will say this: Marcus Mumford is insanely talented. I didn't realize this until I saw The Basement Tapes, and the work he did singing, writing, arranging, and performing on guitar and drums was super impressive.

I'm sure he's crazy talented. I just don't like the band's music lol.

He just needs someone else to provide material for him that he can arrange and perform and we'd all be much better off.

For example

comments on here, it's an opinion question and everyone is entitled to one.

What should be required as part of posting on a thread like this is not just listing the singers you don't like, but list the singers or bands you do like.

When the guy who hates the Beatles (for example not picking on that poster) but says he likes Limp Bizkit people have some perspective.

When I read threads about movies and shows and read the poster who says I hated the Sopranos, the Wire and Breaking Bad - I do wonder what they like (real housewives shows?)

So, I also wonder here, not criticizing, just looking for context.

Good point.

Helps to separate hating a genre from the artist itself, unless that artist is very very unique.

Also, there can come a time where you like the artist musically but dislike the artists on a personal level (Steely Dan, talented duo, but stuck up fucks lol).

I know people who enjoy his music and genre but after his first album, I just think he went downhill so fast. When people say he’s one of the greatest rappers ever - I just don’t see it?

Jay Z came up at the perfect time and marketed himself better than any other rapper, likely ever. After the Black Album he was such rich and famous that rap was no longer a driver for him.

I agree, he isn't on my top 5 list though I don't think he sucks either. Just hasn't been relevant for me in ages and I find his collaborations to be really boring and predictable.

Jay Z had/has a GOAT level *career*, sorta like Brady. A lot of it was buoyed by having great music to accompany his raps.

He seemed to marry the music to his style of rap better than anyone else, IMO.

Guys like Nas and Eminem, I felt as pure rappers were better than Jay Z but not significantly better. And those two in particular were never big on making music for the club anywhere to the level of Jay Z.

And musically, not all of Nas and Eminem's albums were IMO on the same level. Unfortunately it's not a catalog of a cappella raps, but music. I'd say that Jay Z's Blueprint III was his last musically good album, a good deal longer than the other two.

Jay Z could make and has made just about every type of song in his genre and done a good job at it.

His charisma carried him a bit. He pumped himself up quite a bit after the Notorious BIG died. It's crazy to think what his career would've been like if Biggie wasn't murdered. They were likely the best comps for each other as far as styles/personalities.

Biggie died too soon, so it's hard to know how his career would've played out.

The sound of rap changed quite a bit from the early '90s to late '90s to mid '00s to now. Jay Z seemingly navigated it the best, to sound relevant in the most years passed, with a close second to LL Cool J who despite being a pioneer with a ten year head start never had quite the acclaim.

At the same time, if rap music never evolved from the mid '90s sound, Jay Z IMO never becomes the big star that he's become. In 1995, a Mobb Deep or Wu Tang Clan or probably another 10 or so other rappers/groups had more star power than he did, and Nas was on another planet.

Then a few years later, a lot changed.

Interesting genre.

I really respect your post because it was well thought out… but I just can’t put Jay-Z on the same level as Eminem or Nas. I want too, but I just can’t. Nas is criminally underrated mainstream.
I don't HATE them, however...
jnoble : 5/17/2022 6:58 pm : link
...I avoid listening to most Led Zeppelin except a couple of songs because a good friend of mine discovered them in the mid '90s after being a big Aerosmith fan and from that point on up to the present day, he's a diehard LZ fanatic. Nothing wrong with that per se but being his friend I had to endure hearing nothing but Zep songs in his car when we went somewhere OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER again. Hey guess what we're watching tonight? The Song Remains The Same (again) I got overdosed and got a complex about it. How do you not get sick of just one band day in and day out for weeks, months, years?
Even today it's annoying to talk music with him because (Obviously) Led Zeppelin was the heaviest most creative most bad ass band that ever existed. And there's no debating it. Jon Bonham was the best drummer ever, Page best guitarist, etc etc etc blah blah blah.

This must be how it feels like for an atheist to live with an enthusiastic born-again Christian lol

(I also don't bring up to him how poorly I think most of their records were recorded and produced)

actually embarrassed him on Renegade imo, especially when performing it live. Jay Z has such a lazy delivery and almost no energy live. And here he is at almost 50 demolishing everyone still.

I saw Nas live at UConn in 2004/5 and he came out solo and put on one hell of a performance. The superior rapper and my favorite of all time.

I grew up on a dairy farm (a little bit upstate). Besides milk, we sold a lot of hay for horse people (we made good hay, got a good rep, so horse people came a distance to buy from us).

One day I was helping load a big truck and the guy said he was picking up the hay for his boss, who was the lead singer of Foreigner.

Being about 20 yrs old at the time, I had no filter and immediately said "Foreigner! I f*cking hate Foreigner!" The guy just rolled his eyes - and I still f*cking hate Foreigner!

You should have said

“I’ve been waiting, for a guy like you…. To come and buy my hay”

I don't love Arcade Fire by any means, but their songs that work fucking work. "Everything Now" is outstanding and has the kind of instantly familiar hook that makes thousands of songwriters slap their foreheads and think "I can't believe I never thought of that."

it is strange that so many hate the Grateful Dead
The Jake : 5/18/2022 12:32 pm : link
considering they styled themselves as the people's band for decades and they made a conscious effort to stay away from pop and never sell out. they were one of the longest-running, most successful, most innovative (wall of sound, bootleg policy), and most influential rock acts of all time. they also played something for everyone ranging from country, bluegrass, blues rock, psychedelic rock, folk rock and so many others. whereas Metallica views its music as property to be sold, the Dead viewed its music as ethereal and belonging to anyone who happened to be listening.

at the end of the day, if you really *hate* a band like that, maybe you're just jealous that you're not in the club. either that or you had a really bad experience on Shakedown Street.

I suggested this but Klaatu said no - just hate - lol.

I like the Clash, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Rancid, Gaslight Anthem, Bruce, the Get up Kids, the Descendants, lately been listening to Machine Gun Kelly (his transformation from rap to punk/pop is incredible - and influenced by Travis Barker from Blink 182) also been listening to country lately - Hank Williams Jr, Bleu Edmunds, and some others. I like a very diverse variety of music.
I have no idea who Machine Gun Kelly is
Greg from LI : 5/19/2022 9:55 am : link
Bosstones were OK. Ska punk was generally not really my thing but they did have some good songs.

I can listen to a wide variety - when the mood strikes me I really like country, mainly Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings. Like old Delta blues. Like some old time rock acts like the Kinks, the Animals, some Allman Brothers.

Ultimately though I always come back to hard, heavy, loud, fast stuff. That will always be my bread and butter.

I found his stuff during some COVID boredom.

I don't know how exactly but he has a musical relationship with Travis Barker from Blink 182 and he morphed his music from rap to pop punk.

he does a lot of collaborations.

a link below of a collaboration with a British singer named yungblud

His album Tickets to my Downfall was really good. This song was from 2019 - I started listening to him during COVID starting in 2020 when I was desperate for something new.

He is dating or engaged to Megan Fox and he has a video with her. That song is My Bloody Valentine - sounds like a Blink 182 song.

You won't like him. lol.
