lead singer talking and then yelling the lyrics is awful, every single time.
I'm not a fan, but unfortunately my wife is and I'll have to go see them as soon as they come around our parts. So it will be ok (for my sake) if they don't come near us.
including Sublime, Sting, and Nirvana. But for me it's Eddie Vedder. His band is awesome. His voice isn't.
Kind of funny. I feel the opposite about Pearl Jam. In particular, the guitarists are as vanilla as it gets.
Vedder on the other hand is a powerhouse. Some people hate Cher-like vibrato - I get that, but his voice IS the focal point of Pearl Jam and there's no getting around that.
In 06', I caught him at a Rock the Vote event with Springsteen, Jackson Browne and John Fogerty. The quality of Vedders voice when you could literally directly compare him with a few of rocks most powerful and beautiful male voices was striking. He sang the big ending to 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' - gave me chills. Freaking great, great singer.
But of course, music is art and the quality of all art is subjective.
X...surprised to hear you feel their guitarists are vanilla. I always thought McCready was a damned good, if not underrated, guitarist. And yes, it's his vibrato that kills me. Can't stand it. His rendition of "Last Kiss" may be the single worst remake of a song I have ever, ever, heard.
I would like to add that I recognize PJ as one of the greatest bands ever, and I love a lot of their songs, their style, and their commitment to their fans. They are in the pantheon of the all time greats. It's simply his voice. Frankly, I've never been a fan of Jagger's voice, but the Stones are in the top 5 bands of all time in my view. Like you said, art is subjective. Now Tool, who was mentioned, I'll just echo Paul Westerberg of the Replacements:
"All day, all night, all music video
Seen your video, that phony rock 'n' roll
We don't want to know, seen your video
Your phony rock 'n' roll
We don't want to know" Link - ( New Window )
Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years...I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that.
Soundgarden and Chris Cornell particularly I don't care for. I find his voice annoying and monotone.
As far as classic stuff goes, ACDC is really annoying also.
Imagine Dragons are particularly awful as well if we're talking about newer bands, but most everyone I know agrees that they are awful so it doesn't really fit the OP.
Just very very boring to me. Although I like the song Sunday Bloody Sunday.
And I think when people just say they hate country in general, no specific band etc, it just reveals they haven't seriously engaged with the genre enough to have an opinion worth considering!
comments on here, it's an opinion question and everyone is entitled to one.
What should be required as part of posting on a thread like this is not just listing the singers you don't like, but list the singers or bands you do like.
When the guy who hates the Beatles (for example not picking on that poster) but says he likes Limp Bizkit people have some perspective.
When I read threads about movies and shows and read the poster who says I hated the Sopranos, the Wire and Breaking Bad - I do wonder what they like (real housewives shows?)
So, I also wonder here, not criticizing, just looking for context.

Yeah throw Cold Play on my list too.. Absolutely a song stealing bunch of talentless hacks.

for me The Beetles, U2, Cold Play... their music is unlistenable to me. My list is pretty long of bands I don't care for. These three are the holy trinity of distain for me.
Are we using the standard definition for the word? Because, while I understand that everyone has their own preferences, I really don't get that criticism.
...I was a huge huge fan of the band up through the Use Your Illusions.
The Use Your Illusions were like The Phantom Menace; I convinced myself they were good in the face of all objective facts. I and II were 85% garbage with 15% subpar to meh at best. And it was all due to Axl's insane songwriting and overproduction.
And then going forward I just can't listen to him on any song and enjoy it.
Also are we all supposed to forget his lyrics to One in a Million?
something being awful and just not liking it. The Beatles for example - I just don’t like them but they aren’t awful.
I realize that too is subjective but we’ve reached a point in society where you either love or hate something, no nuance at all.
Take RHCP for example. I get not liking them or thinking Kiedis sounds bad, but it features 2 of the greatest musicians of all time. Strange to think they “suck”.
His whole working class hero shtick has always looked incredibly phony to me. Plus, Springsteen is one of those acts whose obsessed fans actually get offended if you say you don't like him, which is hilarious to me. I mean, there are plenty of bands I love that I understand are not everyone's cup of tea. I'm not going to get angry if you tell me that Danzig or the Minutemen suck.
I lived in the Danbury area for many years and way back before streaming it was I95, the only rock station that would reasonably come come in, or recorded music. It seemed a Queen track was at least every third track. I referred to I95 as the Queen station. Can’t stand Queen to this day.
It is awful and fake. Mainstream stuff is all the same song. Cookie cutter.
it's too wide a genre to say that. 50's Hank Williams, 70's Conway Twitty, today's pop-rock-country stuff all completely different, though the same lyrical themes prevail throughout.
Anyone who says they hate a complete genre is a liar (even you rap-haters!) though I will say, there is a special place in hell for ALL Barbershop Quartets.

WTF? Now the B Sharps are hated and lumped in with all the shitty barbershop quartets?
I can't even fathom how anyone could stand to listen to ten seconds of any of their songs. Maybe it's the organ. Or maybe it's Morrison's droll monotonous voice. Or maybe the subject matter. Probably all of it.
I know he has many fans but I never understood how he has any at all . Middle of the road Bro-rock . Don't get it .
I agree. Ill add that I wish I loved DMB because that band tours all the time and treats its fan base well. But no matter how hard I try I just can't do it.
KISS is garbage but I get the allure and I get the impact they had on the industry.

Oh, boo-hoo. There's no need for context. You like something or you don't. You don't need to justify it either way to satisfy anyone else. If you want to find out what bands/singers/music other people like, go ahead and start a thread asking them.

Ouch. I just thought it would help. maybe not - just stick with what you hate, people
I know people who enjoy his music and genre but after his first album, I just think he went downhill so fast. When people say he’s one of the greatest rappers ever - I just don’t see it?

That's....an odd take. I'd call them the most incredible band of the last 35 years....but different strokes.
I'd call them a bit ornery and they definitely don't tour or release enough work for any fan's liking, but phony?
most singers, but if you want to hear a fantastic singer, find anything you can on the late Eva Cassidy. She died of melanoma cancer at around 32. Her renditions of "You've Changed" and "Over the Rainbow" are super, IMHO.
Much too angry and promotes people with no musical talent.
But, I remember back in the 80's when rap was very cool. I I loved the Fat Boys, Beastie Boys, Biz Markie and House of Pain. Today's crap can't compete.
Instantly converted. They're freaking great.
I'm not a fan, but unfortunately my wife is and I'll have to go see them as soon as they come around our parts. So it will be ok (for my sake) if they don't come near us.

I don't know why that is?
I just didn't care or for that matter remotely like either band's music.
As someone said above, nails on a chalkboard.
I would go as far as saying I would listen to nails on a chalkboard for 8 hours before listening to any of their songs.
Grateful Dead.....I don't get it
Bruce Springsteen...He completely sucks

There's "angst" in a lot of songs, but you have to know how to sing it...like Don McLean....Bono's attempt at angst is just horrible.....

LOL, reminds me of my friend who's "that guy" and hates anything mainstream, which is actually the mainstream thing to do now.
+1

take it back you insensitive bastard.
Not at all. I utterly loathe all forms of techno, EDM, whatever you want to call it. It all sucks ass.
