Giants.com OTA #2 Practice Report

TOUCHDOWNS

*Opposite of Monday, the Giants conducted most of their team reps outside of the red zone and worked on the intermediate game near midfield. However, they did take a few snaps from close range, and two former Bills connected for a score when Tyrod Taylor found running back Matt Breida in the end zone.

"Every year I've got something to prove," Breida said when he signed with the Giants this offseason. "I came into this league undrafted. I guarantee a lot of people didn't think I would be on year six right now, so I'm going to keep going for as long as I'm able to play and allowed to play. I'm blessed every day to play this game. I'm just very fortunate."

TAKEAWAYS

*Rookie Kayvon Thibodeaux generated the play of the day. The fifth overall draft pick tipped a pass straight up in the air, and safety Xavier McKinney came down with the interception. McKinney, who was tied for the NFL lead among safeties with five interceptions last season, ran the ball down the right sideline. Thibodeaux was asked last week at rookie minicamp about defensive coordinator Wink Martindale turning him loose.

"It's all about creating trust," Thibodeaux said. "Once he trusts in me that I know the playbook, and that I'm going to be available every Sunday, that I can live up to those expectations, then I feel he'll be able to cut whoever loose as long as they have that consistency and trust."

OTHER TOP PLAYS

*Wide receiver David Sills racked up the catches, including the offensive play of the day on a deep reception from Taylor. Sills, who started his career as an undrafted rookie in Buffalo in 2019, is embarking on his fourth season with the Giants. He made his regular-season debut last season, starting one of four games he played.

*Rookie wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, a second-round draft choice out of Kentucky, was used early and often, catching multiple passes from Daniel Jones on Tuesday.

"Just my quickness and my versatility," Robinson said at rookie minicamp about his strengths. "You never really know where I'm going to line up. Just being able to do a lot of different things, a lot of different things with the offense is what I try to do."

*Cornerback Adoree' Jackson made plays all over the field today and broke up a handful of passes.

*Rookie linebacker Darrian Beavers, a sixth-round draft choice out of Cincinnati, also got a hand on a pass.

*Safety Yusuf Corker forced another incompletion after the undrafted rookie out of Kentucky intercepted a pass in his first OTA practice.

*Cornerback Darnay Holmes prevented a touchdown and broke up a pass in the end zone.

Here are Tuesday's practice notes:

*Wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson has displayed a quick twitch during OTAs. The rookie is already a frequent target of Daniel Jones, as the two connected on several passes during 11-on-11 drills, including a sideline grab for a sizeable gain. Robinson is extremely quick in getting to the outside with his cuts and will be a tough matchup for defenders.

*It can sometimes take time for newly-signed free agents to get comfortable. That is not the case with linebacker Jihad Ward. Through the first couple days of OTAs, Ward is easily one of the most vocal players on the field, whether he's participating in a drill or cheering from the sideline.

*Richie James showed some strong hands while running routes for the quarterbacks towards the start of practice, making several impressive extended catches.

*C.J. Board made a nice catch during 11-on-11s in which he quickly jumped up, made a move and bolted to the end zone.

*Rookie linebacker Darrian Beavers broke up a pass in coverage. The rookie sixth-round pick saw a lot of time in coverage last season at Cincinnati, dropping back on 325 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).

*Speaking of pass breakups, Kayvon Thibodeaux made a nice play to tip a pass at the line of scrimmage, and the ball landed in the hands of Xavier McKinney, who returned it the other way.

*David Sills made several nice catches throughout practice. He caught a few deep passes, including one along the sideline from Tyrod Taylor that was the longest play of the day. The receiver began his NFL career with the Bills, spending the 2019 training camp with Brian Daboll in Buffalo before joining the Giants' practice squad at the start of the season.

*Adoree' Jackson made a nice play to break up a pass during 11-on-11s, stepping in front of a pass and almost coming away with an interception. In his first season with the Giants last year, Jackson finished with an 80.9 coverage grade from PFF, the fourth-best mark among all cornerbacks.

*Darnay Holmes was able to get his hands on a deep pass to Richie James, breaking up what would have been a long touchdown.

*Tyrod Taylor connected with wideout Alex Bachman on a nice sideline pass during 11-on-11s. Later on, the veteran quarterback was able to find running back Matt Breida on a quick pass for a short touchdown.

Thing about Golladay is I never got the sense last year that Jones and Golladay were on the same page. For one reason or another, they didn't practice much together last spring, and when they did, we kept seeing tweets from reporters saying they weren't connecting.

Stating the obvious, it seemed like this followed them into the regular season. The chemistry was off.

I will agree with this but, I will also add there is a very real possibility that injuries over the last few years have really affected Golladay's play. Bigger WR's can fall off a cliff when they lose that short area quickness and KG might actually be a WR who is already on the back 9 of his career. if so, that contract is far worse than it already looks.
It's odd that no only are they not mentioned about partcipating

I figured the beat trolls would be all over Toney's every move.

The sad thing is, Jones has much better rapport with his backup WRs because his starters are never on the field. Sills and Collin Johnson are who we hear he has a good rapport with.

consistent criticism of KT is that he didn't have good "bend". From what I've seen so far, photos and videos, it looks to my untrained eye that he has plenty of bend.
last year was such a bizarre offseason
Eric on Li : 5/17/2022 3:53 pm : link
in judge year 1 they stuck to mid-tier FA they knew and had a wildly successful offseason by almost any metric. Bradberry was signed to a reasonable deal and made the pro bowl, Martinez was signed to a reasonable deal and played at a pro bowl level (he was PFF's 2nd or 3rd best LB i think), Ryan was a great value signing for 1 year / 5m.

even players like Cam Flemming and Fackrell were decent signings - likely again bc they were known quantities.

last year 2 of the leagues biggest enigmas were Golladay and Jackson. injury questions, effort questions, and i dont believe any direct connections to the staff. just such a stupid pivot from what worked in 2020.

never know, there could be a completely acceptable excuse for Golladay not being there but to make the comment "coming off last season, I feel like everyone should definitely be here." calling out Toney a little bit, then to not be there seems a bit odd.

There is no media access to the OTAs until Thursday.

The beat reporters have had no idea of Toney's whereabouts this offseason. They only are getting their info from Schoen and Daboll during press conferences.

No Mike Garafolos on the beat now.

This is about the best response I've heard a rookie give on this question, much better than "I'm here to start" crap

You’re attempting to evaluate a receiver suffering from poor QB play and a poor offense, garbage in garbage out.

Has Jones ever made a WR look better than he was?

Even his rookie year when we thought there was chemistry between him and Slayton, Eli came in and made Slayton look like an all-pro.

Not direct connections but Judge had deep ties to NE with Patricia and O'Brien I think was already with the Giants (Galloday). Ryan had played with Jackson a Tennessee and I would not be surprised with the Judge/Ryan connection he pushed him. I am actually interested how he does with Wink as I thought he had some good games last year and this scheme is good for him.

I agree with Eric from BBI about the chemistry between Jones and Galloday. Jones never seems to have the offseason work with the top guys.

To be fair, Slayton had 10, 4 and 6 catches in the three games before Eli started. Then he had 5 and 2 from Eli. He had 2 TDs in the 10 catch game with Jones and 2 in the 5 catch game with Eli. He had a 121 yard game with Jones and a 155 yard game with Eli. The 10 catch game was a win, the 5 catch game was a loss.

They may have talent, but I don't think they have winning attitudes.

I doubt they get much playing time this year. Schoen did not sign or pick them so there is no pressure to play them.

Once they don't get playing time they will both pout. I don't see them long for this team.

Toney has physical talent but does he really want it??? You need to love football to excel, IMHO, and I've seen no evidence of that to date. I hope I'm wrong. We could really use four strong receivers who stay healthy: Galloday, Toney, Shepard and Robinson (r).

All I’m saying is you watch them warm up together - get in sync together. It’s Shep not Golloday. Pair that with Garret and inability to throw Golladay the ball into contested catch situations and you’ve got a rift brewing.

So I think you’re trying to say the comparison is splitting hairs. Ok, I won’t dispute that, but imo, Eli didn’t have as much trouble with his vision and finding open receivers. Most of Jones throws to Slayton were contested, my issue is Jones not finding Slayton when he’s wide open like week 8 Tampa 2020.
This thread is a Rorschach test for Giants fans
rich in DC : 5/17/2022 7:58 pm : link
Reports from the Giants PR people, with no reporters in attendance, with the focus almost certainly on pumping up the new guys with maybe 8-10 players out of the 90 on the roster being mentioned.

Yet even though about 80 players are not mentioned on the report, it turns into a bitch session from fans who hate Galloday and Toney who somehow have concluded it as fact that these two players are not there and are not contributing. What about the lack of mention of OL, Barkley or others?

This also isn’t a play by play report. It’s a bunch of guys in shells with no contact- of course guys are blowing it up. For those who played, its just like the two-a-days before the pads go on. The “heroes without pads” put on a show- and vanish when the pads go on.

Not saying that Thibs will disappear, but great plays with no contact are a given.

Also, be careful assuming things. People blew up Toney earlier- yet Daboll himself noted he was there except for the early days. We also NEVER got a reason why he wasn’t there

Threads like this are why the internet sucks sometimes.

In the past two days, the Giants have released about 200 photos from the two OTAs.

We have a pretty good idea who is there.
Comparing Jones to Eli is valid, but not "fair" to Jones
CT Charlie : 5/17/2022 8:13 pm : link
Most of us on BBI think Eli should be a Hall of Fame QB, while we'd be happy with Jones if he's a top-15 (in the league) QB who can be a reliable starter. Although Jones isn't one yet, and may not become one, most NFL QBs will never be as good as Eli.

Please wake up, rationality is not welcome here. We need to be hyperbolic and incorrigible, always. I mean, can you believe Jones was picked at 6? We should have a chimera of Brady and Rodgers, and nothing less, if picking a QB that high.

His 1st 4 games he avg over 6 targets, 4 catches and 70 yds per game, 16.5 YPC

He got hurt in week 5 against Dallas and then missed the next 3 games and played limited in 2. Jones then got hurt in week 11

I think a new OC gets him in positions to utilize his strengths.
