It's been a few years since he was a Ranger so maybe I'm mistaken, but that is how I remember him. Not Paul Coffey or anything, but a strong skater.
This harkens back to "good slater vs. Fast skater for me. Skjei is not THAT fast. But he does tirn and angle well. In my opinion, the opposite is Kreider, who is quite fast but hes not really that great a skater. Kaako lo9ks kinda awkward, but hos balance and ability to sift through the zone is unreal. Chytil might be the best pure skater on the team.
TDA is a very good skater, but isnt that fast. Skjei I put in the same boat.
The Rangers aren't a fast enough team to capitalize on it, though, IMO. This isn't the 2014 or 2015 team that was super fast.
I also think the Hurricanes have an elite structure and have really good defensive forwards which helps them punch above the weight of their defensive talent.
Rangers fans watched TDA and Brendan Smith get embarrassed for years by skill now they want the skill guys on the Rangers to dump the puck in on them and forecheck and the reasons given are because the Hurricanes forwards are fast (at least I hope that's the speed being referred to because the Canes D are not fast - TDA and Slavin are their better skaters). Ian Cole and Brett Pesce are the epitome of a stay-at-home defenseman. Skjei is decent two-way player, but I still don't worry about him beating anyone with his speed.
I don't get it.
There is no Bobby Orr or Dennis Potvin on CAR.
Yea, they really got away from that last round. I dont know if the Pitt 1st liners' speed scared them away from it, but I noticed that they were relying on the dump and chase more than I was used to. Also, Panarin was all thumbs that series. He used to possess the puck all the way inside the blue line before dumping which all but guaranteed a Ranger would be at the other end of it, or he would fire it across ice to a streaking player behind the play fo a great opportunity (Strome feasted on these opps).
I would like to see less frenetic dump and chasing myself.
There were long stretches of the Penguins series where they couldn't string more than two completed passes together. They'd overshoot on passes, they'd fumble the puck, they tried too many low-percentage drop passes and blind passes.
a lot of good points here, really good reading them
re carrying in vs. dumping, playing to their strengths. All valid, but being to cute at the blueline leads to goals against. you have to get it deep rather than force the perfect play. we saw it in game 7 when Chytil, rather than send it deep tried to force a pass across the blue line and it was picked off and led to a goal for PIT. Those are the kind of things that can't happen.

BIG TIME....Fox was better than Panarin, but still a far cry from his normal self. He made some really bad outlets in the series. He was ok in the offensive zone though.
I'm just going off of what people are saying here about the speed of
Carolina and their puck moving defensemen. I would definitely dump into D'Angelo's corner. Even if the others aren't as puck moving as him, you're still making their entire team play a 200 ft game by dumping in and hitting them
And no one is saying you do it for every line on every shift on offense

That one play is not a good example. Chytil made a TERRIBLE decision. Carolina is faster top to bottom than the Pens, will beat us to pucks we dump in more often and will kill us in transition.
Just because one play went wrong should not mean we abandon the approach. But that Chytil play, I think I remember him immediately sinking his head and skating back seeming to know he fucked up.
Possess, make them skate, get the goalie moving side to side....thats been our formula all year.

Kakko is a pretty powerful skater. I also think Laf is a really good skater - I've seen people on HFBoards criticize him for it, but I think he's a lot quicker/faster than people think.

Brett, that line is loaded with skating talent. As you pointed out, Kaako has Jagr like strength while skating non-l8near paths. He also has decent speed, but it is not always apparent because hes bot sudden and quick like Braden Pointe, nor straight line with the ability to shift like a guy like Selanne. Weird to say, but I think he reminds me of a cross between Pavel Datsyuk and Jagr because of his ability to curl and change direction.
Laf is your straight line guy with remarkable start stop ability while maintaining a strong presence on the puck. Chytil reminds me of Kovalev. Not as smooth, and doesnt have the finish game Kovalev had, but man, he is fearless carrying the puck skating faster than everybody else.
Different approaches to skating with differing strengths, but for instance, I would maintain that all 3 of those guys are better skaters than some of the speed demons like Ovechkin, Kariya and Mogilny. I'll probably get killed for saying that, but its my opinion.
Last thing Ill point out RE:the skating discussion
I think TDA is an overrated skater because he backs up or turns away from his opponents waaaaaay too much. Basically runs away with the puck and avoids traffic....a lot.
To put it into perspective, Fox looks to fake out or beat his defender by "mohawking" as Vally puts it and creates room by having dynamic feet that fool his opponent.
DeAngelo likely has more speed, but Fox has better suspension and cornering ability than TDA.
OK. Play aware D, not letting them get behind you. Play tight and strong in front of your net, interfering with their efforts to linger behind one or the other side of it with freedom to dart in front for tip-in or screening purposes. Back check like crazy. On O play closer to their net usual and hope for a rebound now and then (there haver been so few). Get the puck in front of it and shoot, shoot, shoot! LGR!
Really generated some prime scoring chances while limiting Carolina's shots most to the perimeter. Would feel a little better if it were 2 or 3 to zip, but this is solid.

Was that a penalty for that hit on Motte that they missed? Blind side, stick up?

Yes that was a textbook crosscheck
Chytil had to finish that gimme. Ugh.
Kid line is playing terrific. And Shesty looks locked in.
Structure and discipline. What the fuck happened in round one?!
About time! Awesome stuff!
Look at Miller throwing his weight around! Nice
Thats how Miller needs to play!!
Superior play!
Really should be up 2 or 3.
Really should be up 2 or 3.
For me: It's not when the third pair is out there, it's when the third pair is out there with the fourth line. Bad combo.
