Former Eagles & Jaguars CB Michael Jacquet III appears to have signed with the Giants. He's on the roster for today's OTA practice. Played 142 snaps at outside corner for Philly in 2020 as a rookie.

The #Giants signed former Eagles cornerback Michael Jacquet. Started two games for Philly in 2020, was with the Jaguars last year.
He mostly played on the outside, so more competition at that spot.

Jacquet was UDFA out of Louisiana in 2020 with Eagles. most recently with Jaguars. Giants continue to spin the wheel out there at boundary corner, trying to give themselves as many options as possible. He's played in 8 games, 2 starts.
and + Length, was a WR his first 2 years at Lousiana before transitioning to DB. Didn't exactly light the world on fire in Philly but there's some traits to work with there.
There is no CB out there that instantly makes us better in 2022. They are bringing in competition so the best players win out rather than awarding jobs by default. Personally I would have liked to have seen us make a more serious push for someone like Carson Strong or Cole Kelley as a UDFA to have competition with Taylor and Webb for back-up role.
presumably this was a guy on brandon brown's radar then and now.
Quote:
1) Can you recap his college career?
Mike’s college career can be best recapped as a gumbo pot. He spent his first two years as a receiver, with nearly 500 yards and 3 TDs in his first two seasons at Louisiana. When [new head coach] Billy Napier came aboard [in 2018], he made the switch to DB and was electric. 95 tackles, 4 INTs, and 18 passes deflected in his two years on the defensive side of the ball.
Veteran, who played under Wink in Baltimore. I know he's 33 but can't be any worse than the camp fodders brought in recently.
he was/is supposedly considering retirement and was pretty vocal in recent years about his own playing time limitations, so not sure he wants his final ride into the sunset to be on a rebuilding team.
is going to churn the roster looking for specific skill sets for specific situations.
Obviously the secondary is the priority (N.P.I.) at this time, but this will likely be SOP with WR and other areas over the next draft or 2 until we get competitive and can rely on draft, and FA to supplement our draft and not the priority MO.
and perhaps not much help on the way via UFAs or cuts. Giants are a bit light on defense at CB, so we're going to see CBs shuffled around to try and cobble a top 6-7. Bring hungry young guys in to compete, push each other through camp and see who's standing in Sept.
might be on the roster, he might still be in college, but he's definitely not sitting at home on the couch waiting for the Giants to pluck him from obscurity.

Yeah, just wait until the cuts in August/early September.
has some highlight film worthy college tape as the gunner on the punt team.
With the many changes on the Giants roster, some very important special teams assignments are up for grabs right now.
the 2 guys they signed yesterday played a lot of NFL ST as well. I think they are going to have a pretty big leg up on any UDFAs fighting for roster spots which means if any stick they will have earned it.
None of these last 3 guys have shown they can even make it in the NFL., let alone contribute
>> so therefore, the NYG brass should not even try to find any level of talent at this time, right? They should just sit on their hands and say "oh well, we made a lot of improvements, but its too late now to try to improve the CB position". Come on man, think a little bit before you type.

Who cares? It's churning the bottom of the roster. Camp bodies. Only 53 make the team. If one of these DBs flashes and makes the 53, great. But chances are, they don't. Why get up in arms about the 85th man in camp
all the draft picks and FA resources the prior regime spent on DBs, we're now dragging guys off the couch that nobody else wanted and giving them a chance to not only make the team, but start, or at least play significant snaps.
At leeast this guy, has a story....that might be a hidden gem
This is the type of thing the front office and coaches should be doing. You need to follow every player lead and get them in the building and see if they are better than what you currently have on the roster.
99% of the time these players will not work out but you keep doing this and eventually, you'll find someone who works out. This doesn't mean they have to be a star, just better than what you had already. This creates constant competition which is how it should be.
Wait, there isn't a shutdown corner available for Vet Min
there are still a number of people who can not see that the Giants cannot afford any big time CBs at this point. All they can do is acquire vets willing to play for minimum for a chance at playing time. I am sure that the team is hoping for a young couple of guys to show some ability and hunger.
There will not likely be some miracle signing at CB this season.

It really is something, and I don't understand it.
If the Giants weren't doing this wouldn't most of you be screaming
why aren't they bring in any CB they can find? This is what smart NFL personnel people do. It appears most people don't realize how deep the hole Joe Schoen has to dig out of is. There's no cap money and he inherited one of the very worst if not the worst roster in the NFL.
He only played CB for 2 years in college. Here's a scouting report I found on him:
Quote:
Michael Jacquet, CB
Positives: Nice-sized cornerback who flashes ball skills. Physical, mixes it up throughout the route and shows good awareness. Keeps the action in front of him, breaks down well and uses his hands to protect himself. Quick up the field and gives effort against the run. Strong open-field tackler.
Negatives: One-speed cornerback with limited burst. Must improve his footwork in reverse.
Analysis: Jacquet was rarely challenged by opponents and comes with next-level size. He comes with scheme limitations, but Jacquet should be able to line up in a zone system.
He's probably camp fodder but you never know who the light goes on for some guys in the NFL.

And whoever is left standing on final cutdown day may not be standing two days later, when the Giants are combing the waiver wire for other team's cuts. Sometimes those cuts are promising young players the other team is trying to sneak onto their practice squad, other times they are salary cap decisions (similar to the Giants release of Bradberry, but much cheaper because of the timing). The Giants could be a good destination for a veteran forced to accept a lower salary.
p.s.--Has anyone done the research on veteran CBs in danger of becoming salary cap cuts?
I imagine we will see this with the linebackers and defensive linemen as well. These guys will come in hungry and push Aaron Robinson, Rodarius Williams and Darnay Holmes. We should all want our draft picks to win the jobs, but I really want them to earn it and have to to fight hard against other hungry players. It will make the guys who win the jobs that much better. We don't have a ton of cash to throw around, so this is our best option THIS year.

I'm hoping to see Darnay Holmes step up. I love the intelligence and mentality he brings to the table, but it's difficult to be a leader in the locker room if you're not making plays on the field.
that I see in games and heard it drove the prior coaches nuts : mental errors and the holding tendencies. He has to clean up his assignment discipline, follow coaching instructions, stop grabbing.
How 2022 goes and where they wind up drafting are the next big draft topic. There's no additional premium draft capital to move up without going into future years, so they've got to mega-believe in a prospect in order to trade up (or trade for a young vet). Imagine if QB is punted to 2024 ...
I read that some people think there will be 6 or 7

i think he ended the year healthy. my guess is he's debating whether or not to rejoin BAL if they have a spot otherwise retiring.
Patience.

Guys...its okay, its more than okay, its advisable to try to find contributors for the back end of the roster. Relax.

Where exactly are we getting quality at this point in the game, and with our cap restrictions?
Quantity can lead to quality, that's where scouting, competition, and coaching come into play.
Keep looking....uncovering every rock.

In 2023 Draft and (maybe free agency.)
Same for defensive line.
It’s a multi-year re-build. And quality defenders is on Joe Schoen’s 2023 to-do list.

Yup. DB's and D-Line. Probably after QB, though.
