This is an odd statement. I much rather a person be who he is than some fake guy trying to impress the general public.

Outside doing some MNF games, I didnt even know Eli was in the media that much to bother a person, but to each their own.

It's worked a lot longer for Terry Bradshaw, but probably for a lot less money.

Eli has earned a lifetime free pass, in my book. If he takes over for Joe Namath and starts doing the Medicare commercials......I'll consider changing my opinion.

Hey, I love the goober too.

This is a clear sign you should stop rooting/watching pro sports.

Any giants fan annoyed by what Eli earned needs to find a new hobby.

They get paid. A lot. Fucking deal with it. You’d be happier if the owner kept the money? Tickets would still be expensive.
It’s just weird to me
djm : 5/20/2022 12:12 pm : link
That people in general seem to frown upon seeing other people get paid. Eli is a regular guy. So is Peyton. They aren’t part of the “1%” or the ruling class. They are one of us. They went to school like us. Lived and grew up in regular mainstream society like us. And they developed athletic skills NOT like us. And they worked at their craft harder than we did. And then they got paid. Why is that begrudged by so many I’ll never know other than that sports has become more cost prohibitive? I get that part but we’d still be getting price gouged, higher salaries or not… trust me. Large corporations always find a way to fuck the little guy.

Let the players get theirs. At least someone is. Also, high salaries help the sport maintain credibility. Too much at stake to cheat.
I didn’t want to single out BBB there
djm : 5/20/2022 12:18 pm : link
Just that many fans seem fixated on salaries even without the cap in mind.

I am a huge fan of Eli Manning and his father and brother. But unless your father was a famous football player Eli and Peyton did not grow up like us.

I never begrudge any athlete's getting paid. They have a specialized skill that is worth every penny they've earned.
DJM: No issue with athletes getting paid.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/20/2022 1:11 pm : link
No issue with Eli’s earnings either, though I think from 2013-2019, he was largely paid for what he had been, and for the relationship he had built with fans, not for what he actually was. That’s a different discussion. If the Giants allocated too much cap space to their QB, that’s on ownership and management, not Eli.

I was commenting on the disciplined image-management that the Mannings and their handlers conduct. Maybe Eli is a great guy. Maybe he’s really good at playing one in public. Maybe both. In any case, saying his proudest moment was giving his brother a wedgie seems like a fairly obvious goober-image play. He knows that image works for him, so he pushes it to the max. Lots of entertainers do the same thing with their curated public personas, from musicians to pro wrestlers. From a fan’s distance, we can only judge the performance, and the image, not the person.

I appreciate that Eli never embarrassed the organization. And if others enjoy the Uber-Goober stuff, that’s cool too.
so many pro athletes out there to detest and/or loathe
UConn4523 : 5/20/2022 1:37 pm : link
so i'll welcome Eli being as goofy and corny as he wants to be. I appreciate him being the same his entire duration here and don't care at all if he maintains this image post-NFL.
A more interesting side discussion that it's being given credit for
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/20/2022 2:10 pm : link
However, I think the criticism is misplaced. Eli is who he is. I don't think it's an act.

All athletes deserve their money because that's what the market paid them.

The only think I'd ever say is suggesting Eli 'deserved' anything better as far as support or treatment. He had a brilliant career with heights not even current hall of famers reached. He was always going to be more appreciated and beloved AFTER the playing career because that's how sports works. When you're gone off the field, you become a saint.

Spiciest Memelord : 5/20/2022 2:18 pm : link
how we should replace steep decline Eli with such modern day offense QBs like Foles, Wentz and Goff and mobile QBs who don't need a good oline.

Accorsi was right, you need the tough as nails, calm and collected QB in the face of adversity and a stout D who can shrug off hits like Eli to win champions, now more than ever.

Eli Manning can be a little annoying too. His little act, almost welling up in tears denying he did anything wrong with the punks in the equipment department didn’t come off so awesome.

On the spectrum of bad dudes in sports he’s nowhere near the crappy end. But he’s also not the saint Manning Inc. crafts him to be.

Lol, there’s one in every crowd. I’ll bet any money no one bitched more about Eli in his career than anyone. You have never said a good thing about him that I’ve read.
Thanks Christian.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/20/2022 6:56 pm : link
That’s all I was getting at. Anyway, if other fans enjoy Eli’s public persona (which may be completely authentic, for all I know), more power to them.

I have no idea who you are, I don’t recognize your handle.

I’ve posted plenty of positive observations about Manning over the last 18 years. I think he’s a HOF lock, a great Giant, and was a very good football player.

And, I can be honest that he’s a little fake at times, that he got the team and ownership embroiled in some petty stuff with the memorabilia thing and then benching himself.

I can maintain all those positions at once because I’m not a 6-year-old who wears Giants footy pajamas to bed and cuddles my Eli Manning Cabbage Patch doll.
