That has had the sustained competitiveness and excellence that the Yankees have had?
Disclaimer: I was raised as a NY Giants baseball fan and loathed the Yankees. Still do.
That said, it’s is unfathomable to me, that since the mid ‘70s, they have been mostly competitive, even superb at times. What team has ever done that? We’re talking nearly 50 years of sustainability for the most part. That’s insane.
This Yankee-hater is uber impressed. You Yankees fans are incredibly blessed, imo.. I picked the wrong franchise to dislike. 😎
That’s amazing..
Crazy, no?
The Canadiens added ten more championships in 15 seasons from 1965 to 1979, with another dynastic run of four-straight Cups from 1976 to 1979.[22] In the 1976–77 season, the Canadiens set two still-standing team records – for most points, with 132, and fewest losses, by only losing eight games in an 80-game season.[23] The next season, 1977–78, the team had a 28-game unbeaten streak, the second-longest in NHL history.[24] The next generation of stars included Guy Lafleur, Yvan Cournoyer, Ken Dryden, Pete Mahovlich, Jacques Lemaire, Pierre Larouche, Steve Shutt, Bob Gainey, Serge Savard, Guy Lapointe and Larry Robinson. Scotty Bowman, who would later set a record for most NHL victories by a coach, was the team's head coach for its last five Stanley Cup victories in the 1970s.[25]

Bell Centre has been the Canadiens' home venue since 1996. The arena is here seen in 2008, with banners celebrating the Montreal Canadiens centennial.
The Canadiens won Stanley Cups in 1986, led by rookie star goaltender Patrick Roy,[26] and in 1993, continuing their streak of winning at least one championship in every decade from the 1910s to the 1990s (this streak came to an end in the 2000s).

exactly. the only one close,
Maybe this year Calgary breaks Canada's Stanley Cup drought.
Maybe this year Calgary breaks Canada's Stanley Cup drought.
Yeah, but they originated in Atlanta..😎
It's just stunning to compare the great teams in baseball history. Just to illustrate, here are three franchises that have enjoyed amazing success across the breadth of their history, with some of the most legendary moments and players, and some serious championship credentials. Together, they account for 26 World Series wins.
However storied and amazing the histories of these other franchises, all three of them are absolutely dwarfed by the Yankees despite New York not necessarily having historically better players (of course, having certain key players definitely helps!) It's incredible.
Now here is where it gets really interesting. Take a look at the 3 teams closest to them historically. They are all National League Teams. Of the Yankees 40 World Series appearances, 23 of them were against these three franchises and they won 15 of them. They weren't beating up on patsies.
Cardinals .521 | 31 playoffs | 19 pennants | 11 WS | 20 MVP | 49 HOF
Giants... .536 | 27 playoffs | 23 pennants | 08 WS | 14 MVP | 57 HOF
Dodgers.. .530 | 33 playoffs | 19 pennants | 07 WS | 14 MVP | 51 HOF
Yankees.. .570 | 57 playoffs | 40 pennants | 27 WS | 22 MVP | 47 HOF
*The Red Sox, Reds, Cubs, and Guardians (weird) would be 4-7 on this list, as an FYI.

Yeah. It's almost like they stopped losing series to the O's and started winning games?
Crazy!
In basketball there are two teams and one else is close.
Lakers. .592 | 62 playoffs | 17 Titles
Celtics .590 | 59 playoffs | 17 Titles
In hockey the Canadiens are head and shoulders above everyone else. I'm not a hockey fan at all but I would love to know why the Bruins have underachieved in the post season so much. Were they constantly meeting Montreal?
Canadiens.. .583 | 85 playoffs | 23 Stanley Cups
Maple Leafs .515 | 70 playoffs | 13 Stanley Cups
Red Wings.. .531 | 64 playoffs | 11 Stanley Cups
Bruins..... .564 | 74 playoffs | 6 Stanley Cups

since week 2 or 3 of the season, lol. Love this fanbase.

Yeah, firing everyone after 2 weeks is crazy, I would agree.

I wouldn't fire anyone after 2 weeks. But I'm guessing that that was about alot more than just 2 weeks.
p.s.--This year's Yankees aren't the superpower their recent streak suggests. Too many guys are producing well above their career averages for me to see them as the the team to beat in the East. That's still Tampa Bay as far as I'm concerned.
Ah, see, I did not know this about hockey. That only makes those baseball numbers, with the emphasis on regular season success, all the more impressive.
the funny thing is they're the primary reason for salary caps in sports. but pretty much every other major sport actually has a cap, except for baseball.
Understood, but after the ‘64 WS, they were essentially crap for 10-12 years..From ‘49-‘64 they were amazingly good/great, imv, but that 10-12 year gap was not good so I started with the last 50 years
But, the Yankees longevity ... unapparelled.
How many world championships do they have 26 - 27? At one time the math was 1 championship every 4 years (average). That is mind boggling.
All done with different owners, personnel, etc...
On the 8th day, God created the Yankees (only explanation - Divine Intervention)
; )
Yankees were founded in 1903, making them 117 years old. The Yankees have 27 championships
So the Lakers and Yankees have both won 23% of their sport's championships.
But here's the amazing stat: the Lakers have played in 32 NBA finals in 75 years. That's 43% - nearly half! - of all NBA seasons in history where they played in the last NBA game of the year.
The Yankees have played in 40 of the 117 World Series, or 34%. Nothing to sneeze at! But the Lakers record is more amazing.
The Lakers won championships in every decade except the one that ended in 1970, which was a real failure of a decade - they only made the NBA Finals 7 of those 10 years.
Oh and you can very credibly say that 6 of the top 7 NBA players of all time played very meaningful parts of their career and won championships with the Lakers (Lebron, Kareem, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, Wilt).
