I think we learned in game 1 that there is not as much of a gap between the Rangers and Hurricanes as many people may have thought...until the third period. Still, for 40 minutes, the Rangers were the better team and I expect them to come out more aggressively and generate some more offense tonight. Really hope Panarin is able to figure things out quickly or at least make a play or two to jumpstart the second line who has been pretty much invisible for much of these first 8 playoff games. I wouldn't be surprised if in the second period or so if they aren't on the scoreboard yet, to see Gallant move Motte up into the top 6, as he has clearly been one of their best forwards (aside from the kid line). Let's get this back to NY all knotted up.
That being said, Rangers need to win tonight.
First Rangers playoff game, been a long time coming.
Just hope they can pull through.

Depending on how the series goes, I'd love to catch a game down there. Would you be interested in helping me out secure some tickets since you're local? If not, no worries I'll try another way.
In the playoffs, the center ice position takes on even more importance than in the regular season. I can't see the Rangers ever succeeding in the playoffs with Zibe and Strom as C1 and C2. Regular season- fine, Stanley Cup- nope! They need an Alpha dog (like a Messier) to galvanize the rest of the roster for a deep playoff run.
As I mentioned in the Pitt series...As a fan, I look at this as gravy time for a team ahead of schedule. This is valuable learning experience and they will improve. If they can win tonight, which I consider a tall order, they could eke out this series. Psychologically, that last loss has GOT to be in their heads. It wasn't stolen like game 1. They lost it. It will be hard to overcome.
I really don't think rangers changed anything or lowered their aggressiveness. They played a pretty "safe"/grinding style most of the game. Carolina upped the intensity of the forecheck and the pinch by their D-men. It was shocking they didn't do it earlier...we've seen that as a surefire recipe to get the rangers hemmed in for protracted stretches of play.
It doesn't make it "okay"...it snowballs on them when they fail to clear the zone with possession repeatedly to the extent that they are either icing the puck or gasping for a line change for big blocks of minutes.
NYR's goaltending and counter-punch style of even-strength offense has played into this.
But keep in mind -- They didn't give up a ton of prime chances when the ice felt tilted against them. Their actual downfall was a transition play with some lazy forward backchecking.
Fluky overtime play ends it. The shame is that they didn't bury one or two more of the great looks they had in the first two periods.
(Don't mistake this post for confidence -- I'm actually quite worried. I think we saw the worst two periods that we'll get out of the Carolina skaters...which is what makes that one sting especially)
Point being - it won't be easy on away ice with the canes having last change.
Point being - it won't be easy on away ice with the canes having last change.
Aho had one good play all game (unfortunate that he scored on it). Svechnikov was invisible outside a play or two.
Everyone's stars struggled.
If we can just get a decent Panarin, we can win this series.
ME too Rangers just came off a tough series with multiple overtimes and 2 days rest. Hurricanes has a week off. Rangers ran out of gas, you could see it.. Carolina was rusty in the beginning and caught their game - Rangers need to keep playing their game hopefully with be able to match energy this time.

A week off?
Carolina won game 7 last Saturday and the Rangers won Game 7 the next day. Carolina had ONE extra day (3 off days) than the Rangers (2 off days). Not saying it didnt make a difference at all. But its much different than a team resting for 7 days vs. 2.

It was COL that had the week off....they will make the finals
Our current match will be interesting. I watched CAR move the puck at times against the bruins that often looked like they were on a PP, but was 5 on 5. I haven't followed any bruins hockey, but CAR looked really good in the couple games I watched. It'll be a tougher match than the Pens for sure.
Rangers overall need to get better on the draws if they want to win this series.

To the non-hockey fan watching (I'm an admitted Rangers postseason bandwagoner), this 'Kid Line' seems like the quickest, smoothest players on the ice last game and this game... Are they just playing against a weaker Carolina lineup or something? The rest of the Rangers seem slow and kinda boring..
Him and breadman both need to wake up
Can we just upgrade them two lines and see if it sends a message to the team? Not sure what to do at this point with those top two lines...
They need to get their heads out of their butts.
.
Looks like none to me.
Because Gallant is inexplicably enamored with them
Time for the come back.
Yep, needed to slide and entirely take away the pass and make that guy shoot. Instead he didn't do anything to stop either a shot or a pass.
Absolutely dog shit effort.
Fuck off
Absolutely dog shit effort.
Not much yet tonight to be sure. Maybe he needs a shot of something -- adrenaline? Worth a try.
I hate this game. Panarin passed up a point blank shot for a dumb ass pass attempt that went nowhere
Down one is not lights out.
I don't like what I'm seeing either....

Too many "pretty passes"...no goal scoring by the top line. Nope, they are done.
IDK, that was just a terrible offensive performance. We couldn't break through.
But I really don’t want them to go out with a whimper….
Does he have a substance abuse problem?
Playing like a 2021 6th round draft pick just brought in from off their eliminated ECHL franchise because he lives near the arena and there was a late afternoon practice injury. In every game.
Not giving up. Crappy as these games were, they were right in both of them. Come out flying in game 3.

It might've been Ray Ferraro who pointed it out on the telecast, but he said that Panarin is at his most effective when he has space and time. Well, the issue with that is that when you're in the playoffs, the opposing coach knows all too well the scouting report on Panarin. Thus, Panarin, like Kucherov has, must evolve and adapt to playing with little space. Otherwise, he's completely useless out there.

Nah, I think he has a leg inj/hurt. And the rest of team is getting tired.
I think Panarin is hurt, Id guess Fox as well because he has been bad, too
2-1 and 1-0. Its not like they arent in the game. Gotta get pucks and traffic to the net, just like they started doing when trailing Pitt 3-1. And it worked
They should have put Kakko up sooner with Zib and Kreider. Kakko looks great along the boards, really playing hard. Maybe that will be the line on Sunday

Gtfoh re: an injury to Panarin.
Hes been a shit player 9 playoff games for us this year....he isnt hurt. He is playing scared and yea the less place should bother him a little but he and that whole save Copp has been a barf fest
Now we go home and win our two home games.
The series is not over. I see this going 7 games. We meaning Rangers played two good games but the puck bounced their way and they won both. We hold home ice and it will be 2-2. So let's don't go chicken little and see the sky is falling. Home cooking solves a lot. Remember Carolina's series with Boston. The home teams won their games. Rangers just need to win their home games and win one at Carolina. LGR
Bullshit, there absolutely no excuse for our teams highest scoring forward to be so useless in these playoffs.
Panarin has played like dog shut save for one shot this playoffs and looks like the moment is too big for him.

Trouba: "They’re a good defensive team. They’re good in their D zone. (We have to) get more pucks to the net, get more bodies to the net, more traffic – create your own luck, create your own bounces. That's gotta be a little more of our mindset."

But of course that leads to another issue because Panarin is our most skilled offensive player. He has the best vision, passing ability and wrist shot of anyone on this team. Skill doesn't translate as well in postseason as we've seen, but it can certainly help you actually GET to that plateau.
IDK, it's a shitty situation.

Agree with this 100%. I was really expecting that series ender to start something.
He looks TERRIFIED out there and completely out of place with how playoff hockey is meant to be played.
You want a stunner I would be all over? Drop him down to 4th so that the rest of players can work the puck loose to catch him wide open for a play on net. Because he is playing a freshman playing his first varsity game out there.

Yet I was KILLED for even suggesting the Rangers should be open to the idea given our future cap.
This guy through 9 games (I kept saying to myself "okay, just get going a little bit, be more aggressive and initiate the play. Pfffft, it almost seems like he cant wait to get off the ice.

SOG totals for the #NYR top-9 forwards tonight:
Kreider: 0
Panarin: 0
Copp: 0
Strome: 1
Laf: 1
Chytil: 1
Kakko: 1
Vatrano: 2
Zibanejad: 2
(FWIW- Carolina blocked 23 shots)
I dont know what I am missing other than he doesnt have the stomach nor game for playoff hockey. We wanted a playoff scorer but we got a cuter Oksana Baiul
Where do you think the Rangers would be without Panarin thud year
Their defensive structure has been tremendous. None of Carolina’s top forwards did anything. Problem is the Rangers top forwards were nowhere to be found. Tyler Motte forechecks better than anyone on the team.
Panarin should absolutely be explored as a trade option this summer. He was absolutely fucking atrocious on every shift he took. $11.8M AAV for that doesn’t cut it.

In 9 games for your number 1 offensive threat is abyssmal and something you can directly point to. Zibanejad at least woke up 4 games ago.

Im not questioning that in the least. But what good is that if when the season matters most, your game is rendered completely useless and impotent and you have to pay 10 mill a year for that? I mean this is like the Rick Nash argument of years past except Rick played his ass off on defense and was involved with killing penalties.
His career numbers in the play offs are 10 goals 18 assists and a -9.....he is not a playoff player, I think we should sell high and use his cap numbers on signing our kids (who dont turn into daisies when May comes around), I like all three of Copp Motte and Vatrano a lot, maybe we can get an upgrade at LD....but devoting all of these resources into a scorer who doesnt score in the playoffs is just foolish.

When you were there, a lot of the times this type of thing doesnt get caught on tape, but did you ever see Panarin look like he wanted to stay on the ice? I know thats very subjective, but for a guy that was having a hard time, I would want to see him staying on longer or double shifting.
Just curious, because just seems to skate through his shift and then head back to the bench. Nothing to his game.
The biggest problem the Rangers have is they don’t have that C1 guy and there are no prospects in the organization projected to be one.
To give up the only goal of the game like that was fucking pathetic. Never even gave Shesty a chance.
“I would love to do some stupid shit on the blue line, but I can’t.

He is doing the bare minimum. Guy doesn't like contact at all. He also overthinks (along with the rest of the team) about shooting. But het treats the puck like a live grenade.

Forwards seem to be conservative in the neutral zone with a softer forecheck but they are the same once in the offensive zone.
We had a four minute power play and did nothing with it. Who's that on?
Also the forward backcheck on the Smith goal sucked.

Artemi Panarin said the game plan is more “conservative” for the playoffs and #NYR can’t take as many risks, which is why we haven’t seen him making some of the crazy plays he did during the regular season.

This wouldn’t be the first time its been hinted that Panarin doesnt like playing in Gallanta system.
He needs to shoot more. He has a good shot. Not sure though why he can't still be creative just not at the blue line. I can't imagine a system or approach that wants him making moves at the blue line.
Rangers played competitive hockey on the road and lost two close games. This act by the fans on this thread is pathetic. Both those games could have gone either way. They didn't go your way, so you move on.
They protect home ice and it's a new series.

Okay......so then how do we explain Panarin's numbers in all 30 games he has played? 28 points in 30 games and a -9.
If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck....
Hes not a good player in the playoffs nor has he shown any willingness to be and he is making a shit ton of money that limits what we can do with the team. I dont think you would be happy with a player like that either pj.

Sorry, my post was in regards to the Panarin "not wanting to be here" comment. He explicitly picked the NYR - maybe more for geography than coach or system, but I doubt he wants to leave because of Gallant's playoff conservative approach.
He's a finesse player. People who know me on here know I would build a team of grit players over finesse players all day long - I was even suggesting I'd have to think pretty long about who I'd pick first if starting a team, Matthew Tkachuk or McDavid - in the end I'm not crazy, I'd take McDavid, but the fact I think that highly of Tkachuk was more a comment about him than McDavid.
Tkachuk's presence (as well as Lucic) enables Johnny Gaudreau to be Johnny Gaudreau - difference is Tkachuk brings that presence and puts up 100 points (Lucic puts up 20 points). McDavid isn't really a finesse player anyway - he had 75 hits (Panarin and Gaudreau probably had under 20).
