No matter how many times he peeks at a depth chart or gets waved onto the field by his coaches, Julian Love still can’t believe his eyes.

After building a reputation over his first three seasons with the Giants as a super sub with the versatility to play any position in the secondary and the unselfishness to accept all-or-nothing roles from one week to the next, Love is penciled in as a starting safety. That comes with the luxury of lining up in the same spot next to rising star Xavier McKinney on every snap.

“I don’t know if it’s what these past few years have done to my mindset about how I approach things, but I still feel like — despite what it seems right now — I have that chip on my shoulder,” Love told The Post. “I feel like my back is always against the wall. That’s just been instilled in me. I’ve really had to fight for what I’ve gotten.” ... (MORE)

Giants’ Julian Love finally set to start after three years of ‘resiliency’ - ( New Window )

“This defense is going to reflect who Wink is as a person,” Love said. “He really doesn’t care what people think of him. He’s going to do it his way, but not in an in-your-face, my-way-or-the-highway way. He lets guys be creative and have the keys to the defense. But our mindset and mentality will be that we’re going to go out on our terms and make these dudes feel it. So far, it’s been really fun.”
I love Love-pun intended-

going back to his South Bend days. He is a gamer.
Probably DGs best draft pick

And yet people on here wanted to cut him to save a few million dollars

All you have to do is read Sy's weekly write ups on Love to know that Love is a gamer. Not the most physically gifted DB, but always where he is supposed to be on every play. He needs to be a touch more sure in his tackling - probably his weakest point - and that is borderline nitpicking.
Crazy to think

Love is only 24. He should technically be entering his best phase of football performance. Interested to see how he does as the full time starter. May have another breakout star on our hands. Love has always been a guy that’s around the ball/play a lot. Let hope he can be that one step quicker to make those plays. Hoping he gets through camps healthy.
I’m hoping he gets to a second contract here

Love may have been one of the few Giants that didn’t regress

in 2021. However, the best part of his game is his versatility and ability to step up into a scheme or role when a starter gets dinged. He doesn’t really have plus traits as a starter while still being a valuable part of a secondary.

I agree with those who see Love as a jack of all trades supersub

Stepping into the Logan Ryan role as the guy who is the 3rd corner, 3rd safety. I don’t see him starting as the #2 safety.
He's starting now because he's all we have outside of X...

And a handful of unknowns. He's a starter by default.

They trusted him enough to cut Ryan. That isn’t quite the same as starter by default. They made that choice.

Why? He is always in position. Always seems to diagnose the plays. Yeah he is not really special in anyway, except for what I just stated. Yet, he is relied upon in all kind of instances throughout the game. Something to be said for the guy who is available every game and is perfectly prepared.
Love is a Good smart player

He is a starting caliber player and I believe he was a starter the past few years based on Playing time. We have had a lot of worse starting safeties. I dont think you look at Love often and say he screwed up. He may not be spectacular but he is a good player.

I am a little biased because at the Miami game he sought out my 8 year old to give him his gloves after the game. So for that alone he gets props for just being a good guy.

He's just one of several players on the team who are starters by default, pressed into a starting role due to the attempt to rebuild the roster with limited resources. There aren't many other teams he'd start for. He's not a bad player, but as I said before the draft his value is as a versatile "super sub," first guy off the bench.
