Run for your life. Dump it off about 8 yards down field.

Step up, roll right and get the ball out. Would love to see DJ excel at this, and consistently get the ball to receivers who are threat in the open field. One can dream.
He hits that.center target every time!

Every practice throw should have some form of obstacles
I'd to see him tuck it,
FrankHuntington : 5/23/2022 11:39 am : link
Make like he is going yo run, then raise up and pass.

Really hope this coaching staff can get through to him. It can only help if he has a great year.

8 yds to WanDale open will get 35/40 or more..

...apparently were always pretty rigourous from what I read and from what we heard a lot from PK and Mills on Sirius. They often moved the threat to shut down his preferred escape lanes/tendencies just as opposing fronts would scheme up.

Coaching does matter. But there's the chicken salad thing I'm concerned about.
Also, wonder if the OL is practicing blocking schemes
HopePhil and Optimistic : 5/23/2022 11:45 am : link
To accommodate space for DJ to step up and roll out, etc. Would be nice if the position coaches are working together in a coordinated effort. Can’t wait to see a first glimpse of this offense in preseason game #1. It’s gonna be a whole new offense, fingers crossed.

Daboll and Tierney can't fix him, it's over. I'm holding out hope only because hope exists. I just don't think he has the mental part, the innate ability to see beyond what's happening and anticipate an outcome. Great QBs have it, I have not seen that outside of his first game in Tampa and against the dreadful WFT. His hiccups in the red zone are maddening, and he HAS all physical tools, it just hasn't clicked in 3 years. I really want it to.
I miss the quarterback challenge

You are right about the fact that if this staff can’t unlock something in him, there is nothing to unlock. Even if they DO bring something out of him, it might not be enough.

Peter King said this recently: In four year as a Giant, this is the best chance Jones will get.

I mean that drive in Tampa this year on MNF where he had (I believe it was) Golladay in the red zone wide open cutting to the endzone and he throws it to the sideline incomplete is all you need to know about Jones and his ability to process and react from the pocket. He had time on that play, too. There was a clip someone posted here like maybe 2-3 weeks ago of Jones at Duke throwing an out to the sideline and he was so late, he was lucky he wasn't pick-sixed on the play. I just think this is who he is and all he will be, despite all the wishing and hoping we all do for his sake.

Agreed. I do find it interesting that jones bashers say he sucks and there is no hope for him, but support Willis even though he has the same question marks. Willis has more elite physical skills, of course. But if you don't have the mental part down, it doesn't matter
Pretty typical for Jonesy

That's because "the grass is always greener"....Willis is not NFL ready, and on the Giants, he would quickly lose support amongst the very same people......whatcha gonna do?

You said it yourself: Willis has elite physical skills and was chosen in the 3rd round. Jones does not; he is missing elite arm talent, a not inconsiderable deficiency for the 6th pick in the entire draft.

What you also neglected to mention is that Willis didn't have 4 years of pro-level qb coaching at a 'power conference' school. Jones did.

It is not unreasonable to think that Willis, given his elite athleticism might improve dramatically with pro level coaching. You've seen what you get out of Jones after 7 years of pro-level coaching-Case Keenum.

He got off a to a fantastic start, and if he does play and runs for a TD or throws for 1, I am sure the amount of posts about him will be quite high.

Hugh Freeze was an offensive minded head coach in the SEC so it is not like he had a defensive minded glorified FCS guy at Liberty.
While I sincerely hopes he succedes

It makes much more sense financially to get a QB in this coming draft where it looks like there will be several. Get a younger guy on a rookie deal that isnt all battle scarred. With that lower salary you can continue to build the team around him until you have to pay him big money.

Pretty standard drill...
bw in dc : 5/23/2022 12:50 pm : link
for today's NFL. When a play breaks down, can you improvise and make good throws on the run.

The players who are outstanding at making that work, have plus/plus-plus arms.

BW- arm talent helps but
Dave on the UWS : 5/23/2022 1:32 pm : link
as Joe Montana proved, processing information and knowing where and when to go with the ball, even when a play breaks down, is what separates the men from the boys. Jones has enough arm talent, but has never demonstrated the mental acuity to succeed. If you're going to take shots (which you do EVERY thread), be more accurate.

What shot am I taking? I thought it was conventional wisdom that having a strong arm makes it a lot easier to make throws on the move.

Montana is one of the greatest QBs of all time. A savant. And he had a very underrated arm.

Best part about the vid:

The moment he decided to get out the pocket he slightly tucked the ball away. That’s when defensive hands swipe and go for the strip sack.

Consciously working Ball Security during OTAs! The back to the lab mentality! I like it.
Best part of that clip

Either he shows something with a better OL, better RB, better WRs and better coaching or he doesn’t. Projecting how he can play based on the crap he was surrounded with is foolish.

I'm not here to join in on yet another DJ thread, but isn't that exactly the thought process that went into drafting him at Duke when he also played with crap around him?
