NFT: Orange peel textured walls

BobR in Durham : 5/23/2022 3:43 pm
Just bought a new condo and it has orange peel textured walls throughout with some pretty obvious patchwork. This is my first place with these types of walls, so I was hoping someone on BBI has experience with repairing these types of walls. Is it easy or difficult, cheap or expensive, does it take an experienced tradesman? Going one step further, how do you get rid of these textured walls? Do you mud over them or remove it and start over with bare wallboard? Same questions, how difficult is it to do that and how expensive?
Thanks for any advice.
If you're going to DIY it

with no experience, I'd highly recommend something called a squeegee trowel (magic trowel). You buy joint compound in a bucket and thin it with water a little bit, and roll it on the wall with a paint roller. After you have it on the wall, use the squeegee to smooth it.

I’ve had it for 40yrs. You can get spray cans at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Very easy to go over. Just practice your setting and hand movements on something you do not care about. Once you got the feel down just remember do a light coat. Let it dry awhile. To see if it needs another coat. Biggest mistake is putting too much on. It’s so easy even DG could do it
Thanks for the advice

If you don't mind another question, can you tile over it? We want to add a kitchen backsplash and I wonder if the textured coating can hold the weight of the tiles, cement and grout.
I consider myself to be handy

though with all the time I've spent practicing with the do-it-yourself orange peel cans from the box stores over the years, any attempt I've ever made at touching up invariably looks like dogshit.
I’ve owned a few homes.

I’m handy and fix many things myself. Had a rental for 45years that I fixed 90% of things in that time. I’ve put backsplash from the counter top to right under the cabinets over orange peel. Again most people that mess up with the cans. Haven’t taken the time to practice their hand movements. Plus they try to put on too much. Just work slow and steady. Do not try to rush it.
Thanks, Guys

for the comments and help. Not sure if the Mrs. and I want to tackle this job - there are large parts of several rooms that need resurfacing and we want to add a backsplash in the kitchen over this stuff - so I'm leaning toward getting a contractor for the job. Any recommendations for someone in the Sarasota FL area?
