NFT: This is Us Series Finale

Stu11 : 5/24/2022 9:49 am
I know it's probably not a popular show in here. Let's face it though, with all the sports we watch to go along with the action, thrillers and violence shows, it's important to have stuff to watch with your wife too. I know you wanna strangle the characters at times (except Rebecca- Mandy Moore gets a lifetime pass). I will miss the show. The Miguel episode was shockingly one of the best of the series. I never was real invested in his character, but if you didn't feel it after that episode I fear for the darkness of your soul lol. As an aside I talked to the the teacher of the visually impaired in my school and she said the way they handled the bringing up of Jack was so spot on to the most minute detail it was scary. Also the way they handled the dementia with Rebecca too. They really did their homework. Not sure where they go tonight. They've killed of Rebecca, I really thought the show would end on her death bed. Also as an aside whomever was in charge of Rebecca's makeup and costuming deserves a lifetime achievement Emmy.
I indulged my wife...

by watching Bridgerton with her. It's slightly less interesting than watching paint dry, but I maintained marital harmony by keeping my mouth shut and going to my happy place.
haha - totally watch it with the wife and have liked it very much

sad to see it go, but at the same time i'm ready to forego my weekly dose of the teary-eyes inducer!

question about rebecca - best tv mom ever? same for jack - best tv dad ever?

Yeah Rebecca definitely up there for best tv mom ever. Of course Jack was the perfect dad. I always did have a thing for Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched but I think Rebecca beats her. I loved that line last week when Kevin was like " I remember when Mom took me to get John Smiley's autograph I think he had a crush on her, and Randall was like everyone had a crush on Mom!"
Watched it for 2 couple of seasons

This. I don't watch tv shows to be depressed I watch to escape real life problems.
I watched the 1st 2 seasons

Loved it, then it went to political too fast and I was done. Bad enough to have things shoved down our throats from one side or another. I did not need another tv show doing it. The 1st 2 years they stayed away from it and it worked out great.
I watch with the wife too
LTPS5611 : 5/24/2022 11:13 am : link
Actually I was the one that found it, based on the previews I thought it was a comedy. I hope there is some substance and not an hr of a recap with flash backs of the series. Beth is my favorite character, she cracks me up.
Did you guys cozy up on the couch with a nice glass of white zin?
allstarjim : 5/24/2022 11:40 am : link
Do you do anything else while you're watching, like paint each other's nails? Maybe a little light crochet-ing?

Just as sweet as sugar, bless your heart.

;)

I'm busting balls here.

I've never watched the show but when my wife wants to watch some bullshit like Grey's Anatomy I just go out and watch something else on the other TV.
No macho bravado here.

If some sappy show is good, I'll watch it with a Kleenex nearby. And I don't have any qualms with depressing TV as long as it's quality TV.

I liked this show for the first 2 seasons, but labored through the 3rd and quit on it towards the end of the 3rd. Once the mystery of what happened to Jack was revealed I didn't find it very intriguing anymore.
Haha

QUEERS!

Jk jk, my mom loved this show. I almost got pulled in a couple times but resisted.

The show got "too political" for you? Seriously? I realize shows get very political nowadays but I just don't see it with this one. What became so political? Randall's storyline? I don't think that got so preachy.
I've really enjoyed the show
Bob from Massachusetts : 5/24/2022 12:41 pm : link
It is a little weepy. But the dialogue is very well done compared to a lot of shows. I pride myself on not only liking sports/action adventure/macho stuff but also liking some things that are "girly" i.e. with emotional content. I do believe men can admit they have feelings. I even was shocked that I really liked Downton Abbey, and I usually HATE period stuff with British accents.

I originally thought the show was too gimmicky to pull off with the skipping around in time, but I think they've for the most part pulled it off. One thing that I really liked was that superficially I initially felt like Kevin has everything going for him (rich, handsome, etc), but they manage to show how troubled someone like him can be and why, and you do see the character evolve and it adds a lot to your understanding of him. I felt less like that Kate, and it might be my innate obesity prejudice.
Bob I agree my taste in shows definitely run the gauntlet
Stu11 : 5/24/2022 12:52 pm : link
The Americans was probably my favorite show of all time and I'm obsessed with watching sports, but I agree I like shows that make you feel too. I agree the Kevin character is probably the most satisfying one of the series. I never liked Kate. I just always felt she was so negative. Even when things were going well she always seemed to find something to be miserable about.

Kate is played by todd zeil daughter.
I think
LTPS5611 : 5/24/2022 2:06 pm : link
The most depressing scene for me was when Kate sold Toby's original Star Wars action figures. I was like "NOOOOO!!". Just like Kate my wife was like, "they're just toys, what's the big deal"

Also like how Kevin and Sophie make up their own endings to Good Will Hunting.
I stopped watching
Tim in Eternal Blue : 5/24/2022 4:23 pm : link

once I saw how Jack died. Idk. Didn't like it.
This is Depressing should have been the name of the show
GMAN4LIFE : 5/24/2022 5:24 pm : link
i watched the first season and then i couldnt handle it anymore. It seemed as if they wanted you to cry all the time.

Just went back to watching reruns of the Office
I'm glad it's over
jnoble : 5/24/2022 6:02 pm : link
I didn't watch but every time a commercial for it ran with the Kate character my TV set did a wheelie
Never watched it

Wasnt it another "Parenthood", which ended in 2015? This Is Us began in 2016, seemed like they just replaced Parenthood with a similar show
Wife loves it...

I never got into it. I gave it a couple of episodes.
Quick comparison to some action films.
smshmth8690 : 5/25/2022 11:32 am : link
You know how in most action films the hero gets shot at with thousands of rounds, yet never gets hit, but manages to pick off the bad guys at 50 yards with a pistol that is probably only accurate for 25 yards or so? I found the prepared 'in touch with the feelings of the moment' speeches that every character on This Is Us had ready to go, as unbelievable as the action film scene described above.
As a parent of young

Kids and with aging sick parents this show hit close to home and nailed some of the highs and lows of various stages. Depressing sure, but also funny and inspiring at times.

That’s a good way to put it. Wife and I watched the first two seasons but by season 3 it was becoming ridiculous. It was like dear lord, such tragedy befalls these people and yet they are thankfully all clinically licensed psychologist and public speakers. Otherwise they would have never been able to survive this world.

there were corny moments but for me it didn’t detract from the great character development, shifting the story from the past to present to future, or the realities of the rollercoaster of life. The last episode was both sad and hopeful.
Les I agree

I love what they did with Rebecca. So few tv moms over the years have been real people. In the older days they were some robot facsimile of the 50's stay at home mom. Recently they try and make them quirky comedians. Rebecca was real. You saw all the real anxieties and emotions that we all went through as first time parents. How so much of her identity and feelings of achievement was tied to how her kids were doing.
I remember when we were pregnant with our first- my daughter. My cousin who is my age was a few years ahead of me having kids. He gave me the best advice ever. He said listen understand that when our parents had their first kid they had no clue what they hell they were doing. We look at them as these all knowing beings with all the answers. The fact is they had no clue what they were doing and were winging it just like us. I love that the show brought this out especially with Rebecca. Then the Miguel episode was my favorite one of the show. It really portrayed so well what goes into a spouse taking care of their loved one.

Yes absolutely. I found all of the charcters to be real, complex people. And how we as parents try to learn from the lessons of what didn’t work with how our parents raised us (Jack being the caring supportive dad to the big three that he never had). The Miguel episode was deeply touching. As I watch my Dad with multiple health issues care for my Mom who needs 24/7 care it really hit home. I typically enjoy shows that offer more escapism but this one resonated deeply given my life stage.

My only quibble is Kate’s second husband. That one required suspending disbelief.

yeah I agree. The Kate 2nd husband thing was ridiculous.
