What? I need to pump you guys up? EVEN THIS SERIES UP AND HEAD BACK TO MADISON SQUARE PNC ARENA. Let's do it, boys. Defeat these fuckers three more times and then battle the Tampa Bay Thanos by reading our long and exhaustive resumes!
As to what we're watching tonight. He hinted at accepting a PE Emeritus position at his local High School for his work in creating the perfect Dodgeball court and he has to finish his speech as he is slated to win the very first Nobel Laureate for sportscasting this year. The man is devouring life.
this is it. you're not in trouble until you lose a home game
Florida felt like such a weird team to me; they won the President's Trophy, but they never seemed like a dominant team or a team that had SCF written all over them.
That said, I really did not expect TBL to make such quick work of them. Especially without Brayden Point.
Winning the game will be much better payback for the Domi thing than starting a brawl and risking an early PP for the Canes.
Agree 100%. I hope that Reaves is a little more activated and antagonistic after the whistle than he has been, but the #1 priority, without a doubt is to stay out of the fucking penalty box.
RE: Really hope they don't do anything stupid to start the game
Winning the game will be much better payback for the Domi thing than starting a brawl and risking an early PP for the Canes.
agree. just hit them hard but clean. you don't do that while you still have a chance to win.
People harp on Reaves because they feel like he doesn't do enough to rough guys up, get payback, etc.
Keep in mind, there aren't many, if any, guys that want to get caught up in a fight with him.
Reaves knows his role very well, he knows when to pick his spot and is well aware he cannot afford to something that puts his own team at a disadvantage, especially now. Which is why he didn't do anything with Domi and Lindgren after the whistle on Sunday. The ref had him tied up, he's not going to risk anything.
He lays a couple of healthy clean licks on people, the point is well made.

yes exactly. Reaves is not a goon. he's a useful player who plays hard.
Per Sara Civ on twitter. Looks like Andersen is close to returning. Honestly, no disrespect to him, but the way Raanta is playing, I don’t see an Andersen who hasn’t played in over a month as an upgrade over Raanta.
Rangers would take another game like the other night, with Carolina having a high volume/low quality night and the Rangers’ stars making a few plays to win the game. Low event games like game 2 favor the Canes, let’s get this going back and forth and let our goalie and big guns get the job done!

You don't know what you're watching.
Reaves needs to go out there and kill every member of the Hurricanes during pre-game with a sharpened stick, take the penalty mins al9ng with a premeditated murder charge in exchange for wiping out the whole team for the rest of the series. Then we just have to keep K'Andre Miller off the ice so he doesnt shoot the puck into the back of his own net 4 or 5 time the rest of the series. That is how you win hockey games
115 career points in 755 games, with 980 PIMs and 2600 hits.
that's a goon IMO or the closest thing you will find to a goon in today's game.
Eh, when I think of a goon, I think of players that are actually net negatives if on the ice and literally all they can do is intimidate. Stu Grimson, Parros, Brian McGrattan...Reaves is much closer to Tie Domi...he can play a little bit. Sure, that reputation may have existed previously. But when was the last time he was in the box?
Carolina’s whole game plan has been to play disciplined
His max penalty minutes in a season is 126, that’s not anywhere near goon territory. Dale Hunter, Dave Schultz, Tiger Williams, Marty McSorley, Terry O’Reilly, Rob Ray, Bob Probert, Donald Brashear were goons. Some of these guys probably spent more time in the penalty box than they did on the ice! Reaves is absolutely nowhere near the category of goon compared to these guys.
Reaves is just more of a modern "goon," IMO. I feel most teams aren't icing policemen on skates who exist solely to fight and get penalized anymore. Reaves is definitely a more effective and functional player than someone like John Scott was.

no he's not. he can play his role without taking cheap shots or intentionally maiming people like Tie Domi or Dave Shultz. He's a role player.
Would you consider Matt Martin a goon?
Can't comment. I know he's on the Islanders, but I really haven't seen him play enough to say. And I would have given the same answer re Reaves prior to the season. Knew of his tough guy rep, but really had know of what kind of player he was.
He was an okay role player at times in the past, but the Rangers give up a ton of chances whenever he's in the game. He's glacially slow and possesses almost no skills of any kind beyond hitting.

well put.
and yeah, since most teams don't have a guy who is there solely
to fight these days, you don't get the really high penalty minutes anymore. Guys like Stu Grimson would get 300 in a season and probably 270 of them were fighting majors in bouts with the other teams' goons.
A lot of teams had two or more, some with 200+. The '87-88 Red Wings had Probert with 398, Kocur with 263, and the Rangers' own Gerard Gallant with 246.

Not.....opposed to it, but I always thought Kaako was really great at keeping possessions alive and extending possessions.
Weird timing too as that KIDS line has been the best of all all playoffs.
Their defensive structure has been solid in all four games. They've been the better team in 3 of the 4 games this series.
What remains to be seen is if they can bring what they brought tonight and establish it on the road. They have only won one road game in the postseason. Can't worry about the crowd noise, just play their game.
RE: RE: Best period of the playoffs for the Rangers so far?
Yup, a complete game all the way through. Canes had a couple stretches of control in the Rangers zone, but they stayed solid on defense, as others have said
And take an itsby bitsy leap you could probably say that he’s a racist pos nut job. But maybe that’s a leap. All I know is the rangers couldn’t cut him fast enough and he’s a legit talent. Nice long track record going back to JR hockey through his NHL tenure. If it walks like a duck…
As to the series the Rangers have the special teams and the goalie. That’s a recipe for a series win. Just execute. Go down there and ruin their stupid little home ice advantage on Thursday. Steal that game and win this fucker in 6.
Ray "the lisp" Ferraro saying that Domi was trying to stay away from Reaves when right at the faceoff he launched his tiny body into Reaves down by 3 and less than a minute remaining. Reaves did great by resisting beating his ass at that point.
Ranger fan first but was a season ticket holder for many years. They bolt to Carolina (yes the state here was fucking them ans so was the little shit in the NHL office) that being said I hate those cock suckers more than most. To me other than those Icelanders or Ice-holes, they are next in line. I believe a better team than us. I’ll take my shot with a rusty goalie or Raanta who will start thinking now.

As a CT native I too hate the Whalers - but...best logo and goal song in sports history

Panarin looked somewhat better tonight. Not completely there yet, but he looked a bit more comfortable controlling the puck and made some decent passes. The Lindgren-Fox pair was fantastic on O and D. Really the entire team was good. I don't know the TOI on both guys, but the Braun-Schneider pair probably had their best game of the playoffs. And the bottom-6 looked pretty damn good.
It will be interesting to see what Turk does if Goodrow and/or Blais are available. We may see Kakko become a health scratch.
Gotta win on Thursday at Madison Square PNC Arena.

Yea I mentioned Panarin looked a lot better. Still could shoot it more, but I know that isnt really his game.
Agreed on Fox/Lindgren. Fox may have gotten healthier because he was the tricky stop/go/side toside/circle skater we are used to seeing that creates so much space for him to make plays.
Braun, Ive set it before, he is your stay at home defenseman....and even that is a stretch, lol. His yiming for bodying people up before they can make a play is uncanny and he is a master at keeping the play to the outside. But he is not dreadful, but just doesnt want anything to do with controlling the puck. Which is fine. But I have realized his game since day one and knew people werent going to like it because he treats the puck like a hand grenade with the pin pulled, but he is exactly what we need with the 20 y/o.
Vatrano had tons of jump and got involved with the hitting.
I will take this game to the playoffs against anybody. Not sure if I really liked Kaako on 4....Motte also seemed over his head in the O zone a few times. But if yields 4-1, sign me up.
I know it's a little early to discuss the off-season, but somehow the
Ive been thinking about it since the trade deadline. Based on performance, you can make a case that we should try and keep both Copp and Vatrano. However, based on fit, Mote and Copp. One way or the other, a good portion of the money that would have been spent on Strome needs to go to Copp. I think he was on all yhree units last night. Plus he can Center a bit.
This again, harkens back to the Panarin debacle. But I shouldnt bring that up becausr he looked better last night.
good win, I agree with anakim that this was their best all around game
I was hoping Igor would get that first playoff shutout, and things got a bit tense after Carolina scored the goal, but Strome and Copp made a great play to close the game out. Fox played the best game he has played maybe since his injury, and Lindgren has been a huge difference maker in these playoffs.
Now it's back to Raleigh, Rangers have been a great road team all year, and here's their chance to take control of the series and earn a chance to close this out on Garden ice.

74 assists and 96 points are WAAAAAY far from a "Debacle"... This has to be a troll/dupe account.

Need to play the same game on the road. They seem to be more tentative away from the Garden. Can't be like that, I was at game 2, they pump in so much BS to amp the fans up in that arena. Just play your game, the crowd is going to be loud regardless.
but he seemed to possess the puck better and at least ripped a couple. I've been under the impression he's been playing hurt. Maybe he's somewhat healing up, and while he's nowhere near where he should be playing, I'll take any progress from him at this point.
Still super concerned about the face offs. I hope we can win this next one in Carolina. This series should be 3-1, ugh, but fuck it, enjoying the victory morning today.

Not a troll/dupe.....it has been discussed by multiple others. 30 or so points in over 30 games and a -9 (as of two games ago)....you dont pay almost 12 mill AAV for that kimd of production from a one way player.

Agree on all. Panarin definitely looked BETTER but we still need more from our top scorer.

His full body of work speaks for itself, including this year with 74 assists as a winger.
The best forward NYR has had in 20+ years, and it's not even close - the man is a magician on ice.
2006 Jagr was insane, so 15+ years...
Okay.....he doesnt kill penalties, he doesnt play defense, he doesnt win faceoffs.....and he he has trouble scoring in the playoffs.....
What could we do with an extra 12 million/year.
I truly hope Panarin continues to build and is on the verge of exploding. But the other day, I looked it up, he ranked 33rd out of 50 playoff participants as far as shots and he gets the bulk of PP mins.
8 points in 11 games and only three where he was a PLUS. Im sorry, but paying 12 mill for that sucks.

Thank you, I was going to mention Jagr. But Panarin is by far the 2nd best forward in 20 years
And he plays on the second line with a 2nd line center who has only 1 goal in the playoffs. Panarin's stats would look much better playing with Mika and Kreider

So how do you explain the previous 27 playoff games hes played in?
Nash was a damned good forward for us too, shrunk in the playoffs. But at least he played defense.
Gaborik is another.
Panarin you could say has been worse than all of them in the playoffs.
Where does it come from? Hes never laboring, he never takes big hits...he goes anout his shift and goes to the bench. Theres not a single sign of his being injured. Are you referring to a month ago when he sat for a bit with an upper body injury?
but he has been a huge building block for this rebuild. The notion that this was a horrible contract is absurd. The guy has 257 points in 197 games including playoffs, has carried a line centered by Ryan Strome with various players including Jesper Fast, Barclay Goodrow and Dryden Hunt on the other wing, and remains one of the top 10 point scorers in the league the past 3 years. He's having a rough go of it in these playoffs, likely because he's injured, and we're going to start saying how he is a terrible contract? Imagine the lineup without him.
Rangers outplaying the Canes this series. Their xGF% is higher through four games.
I think the Hurricanes might crumble if the Rangers come out hot tomorrow.
I'm a bit shocked by this. I thought we had a decent chance in this series but figured it'd be due to Igor stealing it and we'd be significantly out-chanced. Igor has been great, but our defensive structure is miles better than it was against Pittsburgh and now we're starting to find more space offensively.

need players like Panarin IMO. Most cup winners have a player like him (if they're lucky).
his skill is unquestioned. Just need coaches to put those players in a good spot to maximize their output and don't ask them to do the things they're not good at.
his salary is a totally different discussion. I doubt if he were on the market today he'd get close to $11.64M per year AAV - but that was pre-COVID and the flat cap and what's done is done.

For the most part, our defensive game last night was excellent in getting the puck out quickly and making smart passes to do so. We lose a little bit of that with our 3rd pairing in Braun, but they play a very stout game and really need some help from the forwards to clear the zone. Schneider is becoming more and more of a bully in front of the net.
Aside from a few whiffs, Trouba was excellent again, Miller was good too, but he still doesnt lay the wood when he can do so legally. Trouba is just beast. I almost threw my sandal at the TV i was so pumped when he dropped that little bitch Domi (loved wat hing him complain about to the refs afterwards).
As was mentioned, bith Fox and Limdgren were sensational....in lock step. Limdgren getting on the scoring not once but twice made my heart warm.
It feels like we're exiting the defensive zone with possession much more frequently as well. Pittsburgh pinches their defensemen so aggressively and it felt like the boards were always blocked off to exit through. Most shifts we were just ending with a flip out to the neutral zone and changing lines. We're making sharper passes exiting the zone and its creating offense the other way.

I've noticed that the Rangers have definitely deployed some different strategies as far as positioning and player movement in getting out of and through the zone.

Great observation....was afraid to make that point because I wasnt sure if it was just me....but that point about the Pitt D pinching is spot on

I thought so too.
I think COL is the go-forward favorite with Tampa a little behind them, but I really don't think anyone is THAT far ahead of the other.
I feel like Boston must have felt the same way after game 4. Carolina in Raleigh is much different than on the road. I am cautiously optimistic, but I still think it is probably an slightly uphill climb at this point.

For sure. Gallant isn't necessarily known as an X's and O's guru, but him and the coaching staff seem to have found some answers. Better matchups for the top line with last change at home is a key as well. Getting Zibanejad away from the Staal line. They'll have to combat that on the road now. But they have to be building a lot of confidence off these two games

NYR had the best of them in game 1 and hung tough in game 2. If the Rangers come out aggressive in game 5 and take a lead with Igor playing the way he has, they will win.

When Colorado turns it on, it looks like they're playing a different sport. They're that dominant. But if they draw Edmonton, McDavid is capable of anything. Amazing player, has a chance to be the greatest IMO
Tampa is interesting. They're really banged up and if they're still missing Point, that's huge. They're getting by with goaltending and an incredible team culture and will. But at some point you wonder if they wear down. I think we'd have home ice too. Long way to go though...
Agreed, Kyle. I think all TB/COL (and CAR) are all really, really good. But I think the Habs beating Vegas last year was much more unlikely than the Rangers beating these two.

I actually think we match up fairly well against TB. Volorado....not so much.
I still cant believe Florida got swept....I mean yes, they were overrated in my opinion, but everyone was lauding their deadline moves amd Bill Zito's ugly mug was all over the TV talking about how these moves were designed specifically for Tampa...I think Florida has some Tampa juju working against them.

No disrespect intended!
lol, I'm just kidding, a lot aligned to make that run happen. sadly, shy of the goal, but it was fun.
but I hope the Rangers can get Kravtsov back in the fold here. It's a bummer he was such a bitch. Maybe he'd be on the roster right now contributing if he just went to Hartford for a little bit. Sucks we blew that and the Lias Andersson pick, because if we had anything from those two top 10 picks at that point, we'd REALLY be sitting pretty.
Also wonder what it'd have been like if we kept Buch, but I guess we wouldn't have made our deadline moves if we had.
Just thinking about some what-ifs.
Players the Rangers passed on to draft Andersson include....
Agreed, Kyle. I think all TB/COL (and CAR) are all really, really good. But I think the Habs beating Vegas last year was much more unlikely than the Rangers beating these two.
COL lost Girard, and that's not insignificant and I'm not a huge fan of Kuemper - he's ok, he's just not stealing a game like goalies sometimes need to do in the playoffs (like a Vasilevskiy or Igor can) - it's one reason I think whoever wins the East (if it's TBL or NYR) wins the cup. CAR opens the door to COL (assuming they close out STL), EDM, or CAL.
a better player as well. Z plays a premium position and is more complete player. Love Panarin but he had 30+ PP assists this year where he greatly benefitted from Kreider & Fox. Don't get me wrong, he's a great player but saying he's the best forward the Rangers have had in 20 years is a stretch when he's not the most valuable on the current team. You could argue that he's not even a top 3 player on the roster

I agree...best scorer? Sure. Nash was a better all around forward too. Zibs plays a two way game, plays both specials and is one of the most dangerous SH threats in the league.
You give me far too much credit, my friend. It's more like 80/20 in favor of Carolina heading home with a 3-1 lead.
;)
LGR.
So sick of the Lightning.
So sick of the Lightning.
Florida felt like such a weird team to me; they won the President's Trophy, but they never seemed like a dominant team or a team that had SCF written all over them.
That said, I really did not expect TBL to make such quick work of them. Especially without Brayden Point.
I've got no better juju to offer than that. Let's fucking get it done.
agree. just hit them hard but clean. you don't do that while you still have a chance to win.
Agree 100%. I hope that Reaves is a little more activated and antagonistic after the whistle than he has been, but the #1 priority, without a doubt is to stay out of the fucking penalty box.
our PP is shit
Gotta figure they're due?

They don't need to win a road game until the SCF - and that's only if COL wins the West - otherwise CAR could only win at home and win the cup.
they have home ice vs both NYR and TBL (as well as vs EDM, CAL, and STL) - they just can't lose at home.

yes exactly. Reaves is not a goon. he's a useful player who plays hard.
that's exactly right!
it had goal written all over it but it couldn't spell
he's a tough guy at home, but hits you with a sack of cream cheese on the road
Gene Carr couldn't put it in the ocean if was standing on the pier (with the Rangers)
(then with the Kings after he scored against the Rangers) It's a bigger ocean Chim.
Rangers would take another game like the other night, with Carolina having a high volume/low quality night and the Rangers’ stars making a few plays to win the game. Low event games like game 2 favor the Canes, let’s get this going back and forth and let our goalie and big guns get the job done!
that's a goon IMO or the closest thing you will find to a goon in today's game.

Would be foolish to act out early on Domis BS at the end of Game 3.
that's a goon IMO or the closest thing you will find to a goon in today's game.
no he's not. he can play his role without taking cheap shots or intentionally maiming people like Tie Domi or Dave Shultz. He's a role player.

Can't comment. I know he's on the Islanders, but I really haven't seen him play enough to say. And I would have given the same answer re Reaves prior to the season. Knew of his tough guy rep, but really had know of what kind of player he was.

Matt Cooke was a goon, one of the dirtiest players I can remember in the last 15 years.
Until he met a young and budding Evander Kane.
well put.
I see we're all in agreement then.
you mean every team except the Rangers. ;-)

Not.....opposed to it, but I always thought Kaako was really great at keeping possessions alive and extending possessions.
Weird timing too as that KIDS line has been the best of all all playoffs.
hes giving us the muscle we need and not be intimated.
I know game threads of any kind are a shitshow, but some of you knobs really sound like fucking morons.
I’m not sure the Garden roof is on tightly enough to contain the crowd’s excitement if Reaves and TDA fought.
Yep. Hopefully they learned from game 1
Shows how easy it is to lose objectivity when you want it to go your way. Up 3-0 and well killed, now it's so what.

Never heard anything definitive. Just that it had to do with how he treated Giorgiev.
Ok boys, best of 3.

He was kind of the missing piece. With him they are a more complete team.
TDA has always had a bad clubhouse reputation. He got in a fight with Georgiev last year and also supposedly gave Miller a hard time
also fuck tony
With Point out, they'd have a fighting chance
That was our best game of the Playoffs, IMO
What remains to be seen is if they can bring what they brought tonight and establish it on the road. They have only won one road game in the postseason. Can't worry about the crowd noise, just play their game.

Yup, a complete game all the way through. Canes had a couple stretches of control in the Rangers zone, but they stayed solid on defense, as others have said
As to the series the Rangers have the special teams and the goalie. That’s a recipe for a series win. Just execute. Go down there and ruin their stupid little home ice advantage on Thursday. Steal that game and win this fucker in 6.
God I hope we bring it on Thursday.
Panarin was much more active tonight.
As a CT native I too hate the Whalers - but...best logo and goal song in sports history
That was over a year ago

I'll disagree on Panarin. He drives me nuts passing up wide open shots to dance.
We're on to Carolina. Best of 3 now.

The best forward NYR has had in 20+ years, and it's not even close - the man is a magician on ice.

And I still think he is playing hurt

So how do you explain the previous 27 playoff games hes played in?
Nash was a damned good forward for us too, shrunk in the playoffs. But at least he played defense.
Gaborik is another.
Panarin you could say has been worse than all of them in the playoffs.
Strome has been invisible. I can't wait to replace him, lol.
Whatever.
You calling him a "debacle" is at a minimum GASLIGHTING, moronic, and/or outlandish.
So you are either a DUPE or TROLL in my book, and I have been here a few years, not weeks like you...

I really didnt like the 4th line experiment. I think he should be with the KIDS or the 2nd line. He would add an element to that 2nd like.
Bump Strome down to 4th. For all his faults, Sttome likes to hit.

Sorry if I am worrying about what he is doing NOW. Lol

I'm a bit shocked by this. I thought we had a decent chance in this series but figured it'd be due to Igor stealing it and we'd be significantly out-chanced. Igor has been great, but our defensive structure is miles better than it was against Pittsburgh and now we're starting to find more space offensively.
I'm beginning to think about where this team could go...

2006 Jagr was incredible, just wow.
his skill is unquestioned.

We win tomorrow and its over.
What the hell?
Win game 5. Igor is just about breaking them mentally. The Canes haven't played badly, and they can't get shit past him.
Keep plugging.
I've noticed that the Rangers have definitely deployed some different strategies as far as positioning and player movement in getting out of and through the zone.
Great observation....was afraid to make that point because I wasnt sure if it was just me....but that point about the Pitt D pinching is spot on

I agree. Im just going to say Goodrow isnt coming back. Blais we could see next round or the Finals if we get to either seeing as how he is skati g
Quote:
It feels like we're exiting the defensive zone with possession much more frequently as well. Pittsburgh pinches their defensemen so aggressively and it felt like the boards were always blocked off to exit through. Most shifts we were just ending with a flip out to the neutral zone and changing lines. We're making sharper passes exiting the zone and its creating offense the other way.
I've noticed that the Rangers have definitely deployed some different strategies as far as positioning and player movement in getting out of and through the zone.
Strome has been invisible. I can't wait to replace him, lol.
For sure, this series is still ~50/50.

Also wonder what it'd have been like if we kept Buch, but I guess we wouldn't have made our deadline moves if we had.
Just thinking about some what-ifs.
I agree...best scorer? Sure. Nash was a better all around forward too. Zibs plays a two way game, plays both specials and is one of the most dangerous SH threats in the league.
