Which makes it strange considering that Schoen is from Buffalo who has used the 4-3 for as long as he's been there (same goes for Daboll), and the defensive line coach is from Minnesota which has played 4-3 for longer than I've been alive.
Plus Wink is from the Buddy Ryan tree, right? Ryan used the 4-3 as a base with the Bears and Eagles.
2-4-5 and 3-3-5. Relentless pass rush by the d-line and LBs.
Ward will get playing time in the 3-man front. Lots of playing time for backup LBs in the middle of the game because you need to keep everyone fresh. There will be a lot of plays where Martinez is the only true LB on the field.

I was just gonna post this. Ward is a nice piece because you could go from a 5 man to a 4 man front in this personnel group. If you have Belton and Ward on the field you would only have 1 ILB, Martinez.
Thibs, Ward, Lawrence, William and Ojulari as the front, Martinez as the MLB with Belton as the Money backer and 4 DB's.
he's going to run a bottom 15 Defense this year, who cares how it looks.
But the offense is going to break records on points scored. DJ will have 44 touchdowns & barkley will run 15 in himself. Then we can quit bitching about QB and focus on getting the D some more help in 2023 for the inevitable SB run.
RE: This isn't asking what defensive looks we'll see.
About the defense based on what's being reported at the OTA's.
It could be that lining up in a 2-4-5 this early just gives the staff an opportunity to evaluate more LB's and DB's than it does DL's; their movement skills, coverage or blitz ability, who aligns better with what Wink wants to do, etc. It seems to me that deciding who stays and who goes will be a lot more difficult with the back seven than with the front three or four, hence the need to get more of them involved on the field at this stage of the game.
Based on Wink's history with Baltimore, the odds are that we'll be in some type of nickel the majority of the time. However, I still think we'll start out in a base 3-4. Seems like we've got the personnel for it.
With a 3-4 you have the personnel for a 2-4 or 3-3 wide nickel package "derivatives".
With the 4-3 you have the personnel for a 4-2 nickel or 4-1 dime - key is 4 down linemen.
3-3 stack is kind of a hybrid nickel with 3-4 Dline personnel mixed with a 4-3 off LBers although gun to my head I would call 3-3 in general a 3-4 deriviative.

Is there a base defense?
I'm not trying to be obnoxious here.
There may not be one.

There always is. A base defense sets up your other defenses. It's how everything is built up. Now, today's base can be a nickel but there is a base.

'Base 3-4' has become meaningless because it's all situational.
