Giants.com OTA #5 Practice Report

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/24/2022 2:43 pm
Quote:
*Darnay Holmes enjoyed a strong day. The third-year cornerback had several pass breakups during 11-on-11s, including two on deep balls. While the offense committed no turnovers for the second straight practice, Holmes was closest to getting a pick when he got his hands on a ball in the end zone and nearly came down with the interception.

*Tyrod Taylor hit receivers on two very long touchdown passes during team drills for the offensive plays of the day. The first came on a beautifully thrown ball from about 45 yards out, which hit C.J. Board in stride at the goal line for a touchdown. The next one came on a similar play, with Taylor placing the ball perfectly in David Sills' hands from 40 yards away for the score. In addition to the deep passes, Taylor also found Alex Bachman and Sills on the sideline for two quick first downs on consecutive plays.

*Taylor also showed his speed when he picked up 10+ yards and a first down on a designed run.

*Daniel Jones picked up several first downs on nice passes during team drills. First, he found running back Matt Breida on a screen pass for a first down. Then on consecutive plays, Jones connected with Travis Toivonen over the middle and Ricky Seals-Jones towards the sideline for solid gains.

*Linebacker Quincy Roche displayed some quick moves throughout practice. He showed an explosive first step during 11-on-11s, and towards the end of practice he was able to break up a trick play.

*Two young defenders were able to make plays at the line of scrimmage. Linebacker Elerson Smith got his hands on the ball on one play, batting down a pass at the line. Later on, fellow second-year linebacker Niko Lalos was also able to break up a pass at the line of scrimmage.

*Davis Webb made a few nice passes throughout practice, as well. He connected with tight end Chris Myarick, with the tight end making an extended grab. On the next play, Webb scrambled out wide before finding wide receiver Robert Foster near the sideline for a first down. Undrafted free agent Austin Allen also made a sideline catch on a pass from Webb near the end of practice.

*Speaking of undrafted free agent tight ends, converted tight end Andre Miller made a couple of solid grabs during team drills.

*Wide receiver Richie James adjusted well on a pass over the middle, reaching back and making an athletic catch for a first down.

*Toivonen displayed some great hand-eye coordination, catching a pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage.

*Tuesday's practice ended a little differently than previous days, with an intriguing situation. In this simulation, the offense had just scored a touchdown to pull within one point, 25-24. Coach Brian Daboll had the offense and defense line up for a win-or-go-home two-point conversion attempt. The rest of the team stood behind the line of scrimmage and cheered on their respective units. The play resulted with the offense converting on the attempt.

TOUCHDOWNS

*Tyrod Taylor threw two long touchdown passes, one to C.J. Board and another to fellow wide receiver David Sills V.

*The Giants ended practice with a winner-take-all competition. In the scenario, the offense had just scored a touchdown to pull within one point at the end of a game, and rather than settle for overtime, the group stayed on the field to win it with a two-point conversion attempt. It paid off as the offense converted.

TAKEAWAYS

*Despite some valiant efforts by the defense, including multiple close calls at the hands of cornerback Darnay Holmes (more on him next), it was another clean day for the offense in the turnover department.

MORE TOP PLAYS

*Holmes, a third-year cornerback and former fourth-round draft choice, broke up three passes, including a potential long touchdown. Later, during red-zone drills, Holmes nearly intercepted another ball.

*Defensive backs weren't the only ones to break up some throws on Tuesday. Linebackers Elerson Smith and Niko Lalos also deflected passes near the line of scrimmage.

*Daniel Bellinger, a fourth-round draft choice, caught a pass from Davis Webb. Fellow rookie tight ends Andre Miller and Austin Allen, who were undrafted, also had catches.

*Jones connected a few times with wide receiver Travis Toivonen, who spent time on the Giants' practice squad last season as an undrafted rookie out of North Dakota. The 6-foot-4, 212-pounder started the year with the Seattle Seahawks.

*Running backs had an active day both in the run and pass game, led by Saquon Barkley. Matt Breida, who played in Brian Daboll's offense last year in Buffalo, also showed his explosiveness on a catch-and-run.

*Taylor flashed his elusiveness on a run during 11-on-11 drills. The veteran quarterback has 2,001 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground in his career.

As long as no one gets hurt its a good practice

I like Holmes and think he can be a key cog again on the defense with his experience.
Holmes vs. Robinson
mittenedman : 5/24/2022 3:58 pm : link
I really like Robinson but Holmes started showing some big play ability last year. Robinson needs to show he can play the ball a little bit.

to be hearing Andre Miller's name a lot.

I remember after he was drafted one of the "experts" said he considered Holmes an underrated steal who has potential to be great. Let's hope the new staff
I see Holmes, Robinson and Flott fighting for 2 starting positions.
BigBlueNH : 5/24/2022 6:13 pm : link
Either Robinson or Holmes will start on the outside. If it is Robinson, Holmes and Flott will battle for the slot job. If Holmes, Flott starts in the slot and Robinson backs up the 2 outside spots.

Tyrod is a sure thing….no turnovers, smart player, but also gets injured quite a bit. I’m 100% confident he can replace DJ via an injury or just flat out beating him out, whatever. But I think Management has already named DJ as the starter.

Tyrod is an excellent backup. If he beats out DJ, that will be fine with me. However, it sure seems that the staff must see bigger upside in Jones, because that is where they are focused. Of course Taylor knows the Bills system and Daboll knows what he can do. The two year contract is an obvious hedge incase Jones does not workout they will have some continuity at QB in 2023.
For once in a long time, they have a bonafide backup QB that could very well beat out the starter.
in real games i've see from taylor in cle, la, hou he looked cooked
Eric on Li : 5/25/2022 10:23 am : link
i think his contract was perhaps the most questionable one given out by schoen given the cap situation. 3 years ago against the Jets in the game where they ended up turning the reigns over to Mayfield he looked awful and i think the sentiment was similar after his first start in LA before Herbert got in. Last year i used the miami defense against him in FF and it didn't disappoint.

obviously couldn't have known who would be where in the draft but i'd have much preferred just grabbing a Howell/Zappe type day 3 or taking whatever veteran was left for a smaller deal post-draft (like Foles presumably just took). especially since they already have Webb filling some of that coach on the field role.

i know they like the mentality taylor brings if he needs to groom a rookie next year but that deal feels very jonathan stewart-y, though similarly the $ probably isn't significant enough to get worked up about it.
