The Mets have been very very good so far this year. Not only are they 29-15, but their pythagorean record is 28-16 (207 runs, 155 allowed).

ESPN's RPI ranks the Mets as the #1 team in baseball given their record and strength of schedule.

OT/ Deesha: Jacob deGrom is back at Citi Field, still long tossing but progressing in his distance up to 95-100 feet. It's possible he could back on a mound and begin throwing bullpens this weekend.

with a walk. a 2 out walk in that situation is basically inexcusable. 4 sliders and 1 fb, none within the k zone.

drew smith giving up that homer sucks but thats why they need to put him in those situations, better to find out now pre-deadline than after when they can't add someone else.
Smith has given up a HR in 3 of his last 5 appearances
Snablats : 5/25/2022 10:55 am : link
and last night's was egregious - pitch was supposed to be away and he threw it inside, missed by over a foot in that situation when you cant give up a HR. Just cannot happen

As you said, better to find out now. Which is why you dont manage every game like Game 7 of the World Series. Gotta find out what players can and cannot do

Cohen has to open the wallet for the back of the bullpen at the trade deadline. What the Mets have aint gonna cut it

Eric on Li : 5/25/2022 11:14 am : link
defensively he's not good anywhere, he's 30, and his bat has been in decline. even his 'bounce back' season last year was below his career averages.

in COL i figured he'd put up big numbers and make the contract look ok but i generally have no idea how he commanded a 7 year deal at that AAV. it's been 5 years since he got an MVP vote so even with no health issues going forward it's hard to see how that deal will pay off.
interesting note on today's game

the comeback wins are fun and the fact that the team always fights is obviously a great sign, but id say the single best stat of the season so far is their record in games after a loss. shit happens, turn the page and get another road series win.

hopefully szpuck can get them 3-4 decent innings. day off tomorrow most of the BP should be able to pitch if necessary.
don't know if I would call it a big game
KDavies : 5/25/2022 11:49 am : link
Mets are up 8 on both the Phillies and Braves. A series win on the road vs. the Giants would be huge, but hard to expect it with essentially their 9th starter going. Fortunately, Braves and Phillies play each other next two days. So, even with a loss, the Mets either lose only 1/2 game to them (if the teams split), or they pick up ground on one of them if there is a split.

The weekend series against the Phillies is the one they need to win.

any series can go any way so while yes the games in the philly series count double, who knows what's going to transpire. there are lots of ways to drop a series and it's just bad luck and you move on. wheeler throws a no hitter or something and you tip your cap.

the worst way to lose are late losses against your BP and in this case 2 of their best relievers. Those games have a way of lingering and can propel teams to extended bad stretches where nothing the offense or starter does feels like it's safe from an emotionally draining bp implosion. the 2019 and 2021 seasons folded for good on Diaz blow saves in early September.

Don't see them as a match prospect-wise, unless they empty out their system. Cartaya is their only top 50 prospect, and the Nationals just traded for Ruiz. Guess they could move Cartaya to 1B/DH, but I'd have to imagine the Nationals could get more elsewhere.

I'd love the Mets, but same issue with Alvarez. Baty/Mauricio/plus is likely not enough. Honestly, best matchup on team willing to take on salary plus having the prospects is the Yankees (though they have gotten more salary-conscious lately). Even keeping Volpe, the Yankees could center a package around Peraza/Dominguez.

Keith Law ranks 5 Dodgers prospects in the top 76 and 3 in his top 53, he also had 3 in his "just missed" in his top 100 so if they wanted Soto they have the ammo to do so.
Here
DanMetroMan : 5/25/2022 4:15 pm : link
is Law

"This is the best farm system in baseball, with roughly 10 guys who’d be on a global top 150 (note to my editors: NO) and a whole different kind of depth — their “depth” guys aren’t depth guys for a major-league team, but prospects who have real upside and are just further away or higher-variance than the guys in their top 10."
Here
DanMetroMan : 5/25/2022 4:17 pm : link
he is on the Dodgers #7 prospect who recently debuted

"The Dodgers’ system is hilarious; I see at least four other guys who had a credible argument to be on the top 100 or this just-missed list. Pepiot has an 80 changeup, one of the best pitches of its type in baseball right now, along with an above-average fastball, although he didn’t dominate left-handed batters last year as you’d expect for someone with a change or splitter of that caliber. "

So yeah, sadly if they want Soto they are in a great position to do so, especially with Bauer's money off the books.

Thus my point in saying the Dodgers would have to empty out their system. If I'm the Nationals, and the headliner is Bobby Miller or a Cartaya (who will have to move positions, or else push Ruiz elsewhere), I'm demanding 5-6 of your other top prospects. I'd think the Yankees could put together a better package, particularly if they include Volpe.

I don't disagree with you there. They are the best organization in baseball. I just don't see the high-end talent to land a Soto, even for a year and a half, without emptying the top of the farm. If we are talking a deadline deal next year, that's a different issue. If I'm the Nationals and can't sign Soto long-term, I'm looking at other teams before the Dodgers because I'd favor higher quality at the top.

Yeah, I got that. I had thought Szapucki was called up for a spot start, just because the order was out of whack because of the doubleheader. Wouldn't Williams just step in as the 5th guy until Megill is back? Williams is pitching in relief today, so I'm also confused as to why they could just start Williams today, even if it was a short start. They couldn't have thought they were getting much out of Szapucki, could they?
I

too am confused why it wasn't just Williams today. As I've said... Szapucki over 7 starts only went 22 innings so what was the best realistic case? 4 inning? What am I not understanding? Williams will almost certainly get the next "Szapucki" start. They hope Megill can throw a bullpen this weekend and then a rehab start early-mid next week.

Daniel Johnson actually appeared in the futures game not too long ago. I don't know that a ton separates Johnson/Lee/Plummer as potential 4th OF with AAAA player downsides
Buck hasnt had too many head-scratching moves,

but dont see why they just didn't start Williams, and limit his innings. They obviously thought he was ready to throw 50+ pitches. Szapucki hasn;t shown enough to be rewarded with a start.
The obvious reason is that with Megill out

a little longer, and Williams being asked to be our #5, he was on short rest. They are likely trying to stretch him out more with every start he makes, so starting him today early would have thrown a wrench in that.

But I agree, if they were considering pitching him today anyway, he should have just started the game.
Not a "SP" Szapucki fan...

But I still have hope he might turn into a decent middle reliever...

Because its fun....

Coming into today, Mets offense is now:

1st in fWAR
4th in wRC+
2nd in runs
Thank God I bought the cheap seats today

Mets never really had a chance after Buck bizarrely left in Pucki for 9 runs

But still enjoyable. Such a beautiful park.Mets are missing three starters and I have a very difficult schedule on June
Off topic

but I'm surprised the MLB hasn't scheduled international series like the NFL does with London/Germany/Mexico City games etc.
I

went to Mets/Marlins in Puerto Rico (yes, I'm aware that's not international) lol

Francisco Alvarez 0-3, Baty (back in the lineup) 0-2 K, error. The "big 3" in Bing haven't had May's to remember...yeesh. Awful

Rehabbing

Yamamoto's 2nd full inning not going as well as the first. Strikeout, HR to 2021 Rays 2nd round pick Kyle Manzardo, walk, strikeout of former @mets minor leaguer Matt Dyer (Rich Hill trade), lineout. 2.1 innings 1 hit 1 run 1 walk 4 k's #Mets

Thanks We need him as an alternative to Williams, because Szapucki is certainly not IT!
Yamamoto wasnt exactly good last year
Snablats : 5/25/2022 11:04 pm : link
in his 2 games: 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 2/3 innings

Connor Grey looks to be next in line, especially since he pitched today
