Comes in as a low 2020 Draft pick and has a pretty good rookie season with 17 tackles and a sack in limited action coming off the EDGE.
And then the Giants select Azeez Ojulari the next season to play EDGE and experiment with Coughlin inside, which is not his natural position. And then Coughlin gets injured and goes on IR in early November.
And then this past Draft the Giants select another EDGE guy in Kayvon Thibodeaux, and now Carter Coughlin is a 3rd year vet on the outside looking in, and probably out of a job.

I've always felt like Carter Coughlin was a much better fit at ILB in the pro's. I was happy to see him moved there last year and I expected him to overtake Tae Crowder at ILB next to Martinez. Unfortunately Coughlin went on IR and didn't get the chance but this is a huge offseason for him.
The LB locks IMO are Martinez, Thibodeaux, Ojulari, and Roche. I think that Tae Crowder, Elerson Smith, and Micah McFadden are close to locks as well leaving 1-2 spots for Darian Beavers, Carter Coughlin, Cam Brown, Oshane Ximines, Justin Hilliard, Tomon Fox, and TJ Brunson.
I think Coughlin ends up on the PS if he's not claimed

Carter has had a raw deal, but not quite as you described. Coughlin was drafted to be converted to inside LB. It was injuries and ineffectiveness that forced him to play EDGE. And he was relatively effective as you say, but that did stunt his time learning his long term position at inside. And now he has rookie competition.
Eh, Carter Coughlin is setting up the rest of his life
in a manner few are able to, not feeling too badly for him compared to the regular guy, he's still got a playing career ahead of him if he keeps grinding.
That's his path to staying on the team and in the NFL.
I actually picked him as my surprise player this year on another thread. But its a long shot. I thought he was showing really well at ILB before he got injured.

Yeah, he looks good in that photo.
I see someone’s got an interest in US History!
May his name be blotted out.
