if only Simms can ever get his act together they might actually do something.
And what was Young thinking wasting draft capital on that washed-up never-was McConkey? It's no wonder this franchise hasn't won anything in 30 years. I wish the Maras would sell already.
Enjoy!
Giants at St.Louis Cards 1986 Week 5 - (
New Window )
Haha, true offensively. But the defense was magnificent and it is an interesting game to rewatch. It was McConkey's first game back with the Giants and he was a difference maker on punt returns keeping field position tipped in the Giants favor.
Also, this was Ottis Anderson's final game in a Cardinals uniform. The next week he'd be playing for the Giants.
The first 2/3 or 3/4 of the Giants season was quite a roller coaster with a lot of close games, and some like this were downright ugly (as was the home game vs Dallas and the game at Philadelphia). They didn't become a dominant force until December.
Interesting call...
Early in the game Hank Stram mentioned Taylor and Banks being the best bookend LBs he'd ever seen.
For the trivia-minded, that pick became the last in the 12-round 1987 draft, because the Giants won Super Bowl XXI. The Packers selected LSU DB Norman Jefferson as Mr. Irrelevant. He lasted two years and played in 14 games, mostly on special teams.
Interesting call...
Landeta was saying something to Parcells at the end of the game, too. Probably arguing that he should have been given a chance to punt it.
Andy Headen and Pepper Johnson at LB and one more whose name I forgot
My favorite sub - Lee Rouson
And my favorite WR who would always get cut at the end of preseason but would find his way back on the roster - Stacey Robinson
A familiar Defensive Coordinator on the sidelines

Greatest LB Corp of all time, and I mean all time for real. Unbelievable when you think about it.
My experience with that play and I'll never forget it. My Dad and I were late, and because I loved McConkey leading the team onto the field I grabbed my ticket and ran ahead. At one point there was a puddle like twenty feet wide and I thought it faster to go straight through it, unfortunately in the center it was like 6 inches deep, so whatever I had wet feet. I get my ticket ripped and I run for the escalator to the 300 level and all the way up. I run up the tunnel, for the record I didn't think anybody could beat the niners, out into the daylight of the stadium and the game, and what do I see but Rice 20 yards into his sprint towards the end zone. I couldn't believe it, I wasn't even at my seat and the game was over in my mind. And then he dropped the ball. The momery of a life time.
Don't think Rice was celebrating either. He was way too far from the end zone for that. Just tried to adjust his grip on the ball and lost it.

Interesting call...
Idiotic.
They were mentioning something about Simms throwing a TD pass in like 8-9 straight games. Maybe they were giving him a shot to extend it? Beats me, but still not a smart call.

I went into the newspaper archives to find out about this.
Apparently, in similar situations earlier that year the Packers & Cowboys called a play like that where the QB took a deep drop and fired a long pass as high as possible, almost like a punt, to expire the clock. After the game Simms and Parcells both complained about the time keeper, saying there should have been no time left.

That was a tough game to watch offensively. They hadn't really hit their stride yet. but MAN that DEFENSE!!

The Giants WR corps was banged up coming into this game. The week before against New Orleans they lost Lionel Manuel for the rest of the regular season which was a big part of the reason they traded for McConkey, they just needed a live body to put out there. There were also rumors that the Giants were looking to trade with the Rams for Henry Ellard.
The defense and special teams were both phenomenal in the game. Taylor, Banks, Carson, Marshall, Landetta, McConkey were all at the top of their games. The broadcast even mentions Allegre finally settling the Giants PK woes.
I distinctly remember a blurb on WFAN from Simms: "We can't even run out the clock right."

WFAN didnt go on the air until July 1, 1987

Dick Lynch back in 1986 on WNEW.
Thanks. I'll happily take requests.
I happened to post this one because I saw the video on YouTube and hadn't seen this game since it first aired. Knowing it was McConkey's first game back and Anderson's last with the Cardinals I was particularly interested in it.
I have accesses to dozens of old newspaper archives that I am always browsing around in just for my own amusement. If anyone has a particular game or two that they're interested in me digging up notes, quotes, factoids or whatever on, just let me know. I'm happy to oblige.

Yes. And they needed a sure handed return man too. Getting Allegre was clutch.

Thanks Larry, good job. Seems like with 7 seconds that may not have been the best idea, and kind of glad we didn't see that happen again.
Not the best of games but great season...

Ok, then 660AM WNBC with Dave Sims in the 6 or 7pm slot..........
Walsh said that out of respect, but the truth is the Niners probably put up a much better fight.
The 49 points to me is the team giving up completely after that Montana KO/LT pick 6.
I see it as 30-13 NYG probably, as the Niners had a hard time stopping the run and producing consistent offense of their own.
I'm sure you could carve up reasons why the Giants lost 44-3 in Simms/LT's last NFL game as something other than just being completely dominated on the field.
But @ least you're realistic enough to know the Giants most likely win that game.

Based on the MNF comeback that year and the improvements of NYG from '85 to '86, yes, the Giants were the better team.
