I thought their most interesting take was only 4 or 5 DL
BillT : 5/26/2022 9:48 am : link
It is a thin position but they seem to think we’ll use a lot to 2 DL sets.

What do you guys think about that. Eric mentioned it ther other day that a 2-4-5 might be the “base” D. Is that a thing? I don’t remember seeing a lot of that outside of maybe 3rd and long. Hard for ma to make sense of a “light” lineup on early downs. Seems vulnerable to the run.

This will be interesting to watch. It would explain why we don't have a lot of DLs on the roster right now.

I think Thibs will, at times, line up next to Lawrence and Williams to rush the qb.
I didn’t get a chance to listen
gersh : 5/26/2022 10:00 am : link
And maybe they discussed this but-
Is this correct ? -
Jihad Ward OLB 6-5 297
If we have a 300 lbs OLB - sounds like he will
also be used as a DE/DT?

Yeah, we're in unchartered territory from a NYG fans perspective. I had Ward listed as a DE because of his size. But they gave him a LB number, have him playing at LB, and their press releases keep calling him a LB.

If you look at the tape of Ward in Baltimore, he was used all over the place. Rush OLB, hand in the dirt from the outside, lining up inside. Dropping. Etc.

So the positions are no longer black-and-white, but more shades of gray.

But this would be true with 3 DLs on the field as we saw last year with the SSLB position that Carter played.
Ward will be an interesting watch
Rjanyg : 5/26/2022 12:49 pm : link
He seems to have versatility, can line up as a DE in a 3-4 or 4-3 and may move inside on 3rd and long as a DT in Nickel. Also play OLB in base or Goalline.

Wilkins coached him before, and let's remember he's the oldest OLB in the room. He's certain to make the squad despite Bobby Skinner not listing him.

Also, the previous defenses in BAL had Martindale use a number of OLB blitz packages. He uses them a lot.

Yeah, those guys probably wished they made their lists after today's interview.

Ward is making this team.
Lotsa Beef with experience and young developmental guys
HopePhil and Optimistic : 5/26/2022 7:34 pm : link
Dex 342 LBs
Justin Ellis 334
Williams 302
Ward 297

Davidson 327
Hinton 310
Moa 296
Holmes 283
Jabari Ellis 278
Anderson 276

I’d guess the top 4 will be active each week and share the snaps across the front, along with lighter edge players that weigh 240-260 (Thibs, Ojulari, Roche and Smith. Maybe one or two of the second group above gets a game Jersey to sub in to keep the others fresh, and some of the rest develop on the practice squad?

That would still leave room for 3-4 ILBs and 10 or so DBs.

Seems like a good balance of vets and youth for a team in rebuild mode.
The first week of training camp will be telling for sure
SGMen : 5/27/2022 6:17 am : link
More will be revealed, for sure!

My biggest concern is the health of LT Thomas due to his hobbling ankle and such post-surgery. If he isn't a 16 game stud but rather an oft-injured guy yet again it changes the OL and our ability to execute. Very worrisome....

We've got nine now, and my guess is we'll keep five. Plus, we've got Ward, if he sticks, who's played DE and DT, although now they have him at OLB. Figure we'll be in sub-packages most of time anyway, so they'll probably have an LB or two up front.
I'm going to make a suggestion here
blueblood : 5/27/2022 7:57 am : link
as fans we really need to start looking at the Ravens defense and how they utilize their players. We have a conception of what a player should be based on size. Their defense is a hybrid 3-4 and they dont use players traditionally in the way we think.

Even the Talkin' Giants guys were debating between four and five. Five is thin. They did that last year, but imagine if Dexter Lawrence and/or Leonard Williams get hurt?

Plus, right now, when you get beyond those two and Justin Ellis, the options aren't real good.

The last four years in Baltimore, Wink had 5, 6, 7, and 5 D-Linemen on his roster. Five may be thin on the 53, but there's the PS, too. Let's face it, we're thin in a lot of units, but "you go to war with the army you have, not the army you wish you had." I expect next offseason to focus heavily on the D-Line and DB's. For now, we just have to hope for the best.

No doubt they will have some DLs on the PS, but I'm talking more about the quality.

The team needs to address WR, CB, possibly QB in next year's draft. But they also need to address DL.

One guy to watch on the roster right now is Jalyn Holmes, who was coached by Andre Patterson in Minnesota. He was a better Viking than Saint.
I also

wonder what Martindale thinks about Moa. Thus far, he's been pegged with the second unit.

If they go to the PS for anything the quality will suffer. But next offseason we'll see what they can pull off in free agency as well as the draft. We knew we were in for more than a one-year rebuild.

Watching the videos in the link blueblood posted, I think you can see why Wink loved Thibodeux. But I also think he's going to love Smith, too (I wonder if he's bulked up a bit), and I also think he's going to get more out of Beavers than any draftnik might have expected.
I think like most people I'm more concerned with the Secondary.
Klaatu : 5/27/2022 8:52 am : link
Not so much with the CB's, though. I'm very anxious to see who makes the cut at Safety.

Perhaps I tuned it out by that point, but it seems they didn't have Jarren Williams on the roster? Right now, I think he makes it.

@GiantInsider
Jerome Henderson told me that the “physicality “ stood out in Jarren Williams game at the end of last season. “He’s a heavy tackler” and one of the reasons why they moved him.
Pointed that out numerous times last year on how physical Williams is and how he came up and put a hat

It doesn't seem like they've been paying attention to what's been reported at the OTA's.

I think the Andre Patterson hire is the most underrated addition to the staff. He is arguably the best DL coach in the NFL. He appears to get the most out of whichever defensive lineman he coaches.
