1. The Carnival Freedom caught fire this morning. Billowing black smoke could be seen from the stack. Fortunately the ship was in port and they were able to evacuate the passengers. No word on how badly the ship is damaged.
2. Many passengers were sickened on the Carnival Magic this morning in Norfolk by toxic fumes. This story is in the shadow of their other disaster however it may be more serious than what's being reported in the news. In the attached video a ships officer is offering passengers a refund + $1500 cash + $2000 cruise credit. That would indicate that this is pretty serious. There are also unsubstantiated rumors that some passengers became seriously ill.
As a consolation prize, a Royal Caribbean ship crashed into a pier in Jamaica earlier today. The damage to the ship is cosmetic ( we hope ) but the damage to the pier is extensive.
Since returning from COVID, I've heard about more bad incidents in the cruising industry than I have for the past 10 years.
My wife and I are planning an NCL cruise from New York to Bermuda in June. This will be our second post COVID cruise. I'm hoping for an incident free cruise.

Meh - a couple waves and some wind. Keeps the restaurants empty...
Also our AC was broken in our room and it was an interior room with no balcony or window so it sucked. We complained multiple times and reported it but they did nothing to fix it. We became friendly with the floor manager and she told us that the AC has been broken for over a month and that she has reported it multiple times but they don't do anything about it. I went to customer service after I had enough and all they gave us was $150 off our bar bill and 10% off a future cruise. I told them I don't want the 10% because I will never sail on Carnival again.

Have gone on Celebrity three times, Princess and Carnival once. I really don't care to go on another Carnival cruise.
As you can guess, I like Celebrity best. Especially for older people. Better food, staterooms, staff, destinations, etc.
Just a bit more expensive.

Furniture Flying - ( New Window )
For most of the 7 days we were outrunning a tropical storm. We were able to stay in sunny weather most of the way, but the seas were rough. Many passengers got seasick, some to the point of needing injections. Me, I was just out of the Navy. Rough seas didn't bother me and I had a ball.
In spite of the complaints about bad weather on a cruise, What people don't realize is that cruise ships are uniquely able to escape bad weather. Its common for cruise ships to modify their itineraries on the fly to do so. The tropical storm our ship successfully avoided hammered southeast Florida head on. Anyone vacationing in Miami that week had their vacation ruined.

Lady on a cruise needs a blood transfusion and they infect her with HIV. I can't imagine.
Huh ? Do you have a link ?
Crazy story, but here ya go....

That’s not what happened on our cruise. They made a deliberate decision to sail directly through a category 3 equivalent storm. Business decision so they could return in time for the next cruise to start. Port of call cancelled. On board entertainment cancelled. Restaurant service cancelled. No elevator service (flooded with seawater).

I have also been on Norwegian, Celebrity, Disney, and Carnival cruises. Carnival is by far the worst cruise line. I went with 3 of my friends in college so we still had fun but the actual Cruise was a shit show. The food was the worst of any cruise line I've been on.

Jay, How long ago was that ? Back in the day Carnival had a reputation as a floating Motel 6. I thought they had cleaned up their act up until today.
That was 2004 or 2005.

Celebrity is owned by the same group as Royal Caribbean. Royal Caribean is my favorite but Celebrity was a close second. I don't remember the name of the ship I went on but at the time the Celebrity ship looked exactly like an older Royal Caribbean ship. The food on both are great as is the entertainment. I would love to go on another soon but my wife isn't the biggest fan.
On my upcoming NCL cruise, I wouldn't be surprised to have to endure inexperienced waiters, a shortage of hotel personnel and watered down entertainment. But I expect and demand that the ship itself be in tip top mechanical condition. Remember that Carnival ship that had an engine fire at sea and had to be towed to port a few years ago ? At the time it was known as the "poop" cruise because they lost electricity and plumbing, however if a hurricane developed and they couldn;t get out of the way, it would have been the worst maritime disaster since the Titanic.
This year Carnival is home porting a ship in San Francisco. I was hoping to take it to Alaska this summer. No longer.

At least there's a game 7 to watch while puking. I am so grateful.
That’s her allegation in a lawsuit, as reported by a clickbait tabloid that Wikipedia has banned as a reference. Maybe it’s true, maybe not. But what should the cruise line have done? Let her bleed out through her rectum while they sent donor samples for screening?
