Great Duggan Article on Nick Gates

Sounds like he still has a long road to making it back on the field. Hope it happens sooner than later.

Gates, 26, is still regaining strength in his leg. While his teammates have been on the practice field this spring, Gates has been rehabbing inside the facility. He’s aiming to be ready for training camp, but he seems to recognize that’s an ambitious target.

“I don’t know if it’s happening. It’s just a goal I’m trying to shoot for,” Gates said. “Not saying that’s my timeline or anything. We’ll see. I don’t know if it’s going to happen or not. It’s tough to tell.”

Agreed. If he can make it back to field, even if just for a few games late this season, it will be a great step forward.

I just hope he’s in Giants blue when he plays again. Gotta think he’s a long shot with his cap number and likely recovery time. Hopefully they see enough to work out an extension to ease the cap hit, but I’m not optimistic.
I don’t think we need to be worrying about the cap going forward.

Barring some injury disaster, Schoen has it at a manageable level. I can’t think of what would be a disaster since the team right now does not have a key player that they can’t do without, except maybe Jackson. I think they will just ride out the storm of any injury. I don’t think Gates would be a cap casualty under any circumstances.

This should be a learning year for players, coaches and front office. Just go with what you got and hope for improvement, lucky breaks and golden nuggets.
Gates is my favorite Giant. He came to the team as an undrafted free

agent. He can play tackle, guard and center and plays them all well. And finally, he was a team captain. If anyone can recover from that horrible injury, it's Nick Gates.
Duggan is the best writer covering the Giants right now.

Great read. Gates is an easy guy to root for; undrafted, beloved by teammates, & will no doubt work his ass off to get back on the field. I hope he does.
It would be a great comeback story if Gates can make it back
Jimmy Googs : 5/27/2022 6:23 pm : link
at some point. With that said, Giants still need to get a dedicated Center on this roster for the longer term.

Should have done it this past draft but next year will be fine...

It was impossible to find the long term players at RT, LG, C, ER, CB, S, ILB, DE, and NT in one draft. The Giants likely have their RT for the long term and possibly LG from the draft. Feliciano will be the short term answer allowing the Giants to find that long term option next year unless by some miracle Bredeson earns that job. He's been working exclusively at center with the second team so far so that's something to keep an eye on.

If he’s on the PUP list, depending how tight they are against the cap, it may be very tempting to cut him and save over $2M. Keep in mind that his contract runs at the end of the season.

Also, since there are now a limited number of players you can designate to return (unlike last season), the Giants might want to save that tag for a player closer to a return or honestly, more likely to return.

Nothing says that they can’t bring him back later if his leg improves, but it is a business first.

Taking a swing here, but I say Bredeson doesn’t make the roster. I don’t see enough talent in his game.

And that doesn’t bode well for you if you can’t make the NYG OL...
I could be off on this since I'm not privy to much info

but it seems to me, for the sake of the player, Giants management should insist that Gates not see any football action until 2023.

Gates required four surgeries, which are called fasciotomies, to treat the compartment syndrome.

“They opened it once, and then every time they went in, they closed it little by little and cleaned out the area and stretched my leg,” Gates said.

every injury is different and there are no guarantees. Gates had a seventh surgery — matching Seubert’s total — “two or three months ago” for complications that he declined to disclose.

“(The leg) doesn’t feel normal, but it finally doesn’t hurt anymore.“

That was a gruesome injury that did a ton of soft tissue damage. It's highly unlikely that he'll regain form. Hope he proves me wrong.
I see only two players that
section125 : 5/28/2022 6:32 am : link
can really help the cap, Gates $2.1 mill and Slayton $2.5 mill.
Love is also $2.5 mill, but he is going nowhere. They might be better off extending him.

OTC says they are at $6 mill in cap space. Sadly, I do not believe Gates will be ready this year. Emotion aside, an injury settlement is actually warranted.

This is exactly how I see it, with one other possibility, dependent on the amount of the settlement. The settlement counts against the cap. If you anticipate that the settlement is in the 8-9 week range at his current salary, you could save the same amount by signing him to an extension that pays him the vet minimum this year.
Yes, I’m grasping at straws hoping to keep him in blue. But not impossible.
Recovery 1st and foremost: playing status is secondary

Hope so too, he has Seubert's example and his own will to get it back. (bonds, you've been absent from hockey threads. All ok?)

section, buddy, I know you are addressing this as a business decision, but it's secondary.

I would hope that an injury settlement is made--is Pepe right that such counts vs. the cap?--and Schoen and Mara make clear that if he can make it all the way back, he has an open door to sign and compete. I can't believe another team would mess with this story by attempting to sign him, though we should all hope he makes it back that far to put him in play.

Sounds like a miracle that he's able to walk after that. Stressing and risking the leg again on a football field sounds very dangerous and wrong. He should hang it up and count himself lucky with his repair.
Last year, when II saw Gates, Lemiuex, Martinez all go down with

season ending injuries so early on I knew we were in trouble.

The Gates injury was especially gruesome as he was roundng into a leader and strong player for us. I am one who believes if there is even one iota of doubt about hi future and ability to play (meaning great risk to him) he should just retire and enjoy his life with the ability to walk at least.
