It all the time and they fail miserably. Even when someone from around there recommends a place, they are so bad to the point I won't take their advice...on anything any more.
I DID have one from this joint in Sayreville NK that was really close to some of the best Ive had in Philly.
Philly is definitely a cool city....in doses for me tho. Their fiod scene is pretty awesome tho. I mean, aside from Roast Pork, Steaks and the Market, their restaurant scene is cool as hell. Lots of tapas and small plates. 13th st is great. Best Chinatown on the East Coast in my opinion and they have a great Pho area as well as super authentic Mexican/Latin American.
I think it used to be. Old City has kinda gotten douchey and recent college gradish. Queen Village, which is just south of that area is gorgeous with restaurants, bars and quieter neighborhoods surrounding the south street bedlam.
Honestly, the most beautiful part of Philly is the Chestnut Hill area. The best cheesesteak in the city is right near it in Roxborough, but I always loved the stone houses and suburb feel to that edge of the city.
Philly is a passionate, great rock and roll town. I can’t stand almost everything else Philly but it’s one of my favorite cities in the country to go to see a show.
Eg, I’m a big old school Genesis fan and on their tour in 07 Philly was the only city on their North American tour they played three nights. All were sold out as well.
Not to mention the great Springsteen shows I’ve seen there including his longest U.S. show ever. In 2016 he played a 4:04 show at the Ballpark.
You name the band, they’ll most likely have a huge following in Philly and sell out their shows every time.
my dad's early retirement and his death. Approx. 4 years. They were on North 24th Street. It seemed like a pretty nice town to me, other than the sports teams like the Eagles and the Flyers! I have at least some respect for the Sixers. Never saw the Phillies as much of an issue. Used to go to their AA minor league team games when their AA team was in Reading.

N 24th is a neighborhood Im familiar with....Brewerytown....by the zoo. Its gentrified, but gets a lot of spillage from north of girard. Cecil B Moore is a few blocks away and thats the start of the badlands.
Honestly, the Eagles are even starting to ruin Rocky for me. He shows up way too often in those pregame motivational videos.
Philly is so bragadocious about the Rocky legacy
Mickey's gym on Front and Susquehanna is a vacant building in one of the most drug riddled parts of Philly and Rocky's house is not much better in a less shitty part of a similar neighborhood. You would think those two places would be shrines/museums the way thT city reps the m9vies.
Because I'll admit that cream cheese is good too, except:
Philadelphia Cream Cheese is not from Philadelphia. It's not made here now, nor was it at any point in its 135-year history. The archetype of the thick spread that's become part of the American breakfast canon was first developed and produced in upstate New York.
It should be and needs to be a great American city
It was going good for a while but the pandemic and leaderships response really have impacted the city. Murders were at 550 last year for a city that typically averages about 300.
Like a lot of great cities they are being led down a bath path and tough to see how things change as people keep falling for these leaders.
Monk's is a great bar. They have a very good food and bar scene overall but probably about 15% have closed with many more hanging on by a thread. The numbers are way down on a weekday basis of commuters coming in. If this does not change hard to see a big rebound and with the huge crime spike it has impacted tourism which the city needs.
Philly’s a great city. Excellent restaurants, variety of good neighborhoods, lots of history, and the quality of their sports stadiums and the way they set them all up easily accessible near the city in south Philly puts the New York sports arenas to shame
to visit......old town, midtown, south street is always fun, but the one thing I hate about Philly and probably the only thing is THE FREAKIN EAGLES! It would be nice to have their number for once!
My niece runs a B & B in the central part of Philly
But there has been a recent rise in carjackings which is a real concern. I am not comfortable parking on the street at all and garage parking - forget about it!
Recently Philly seems to periodically be inundated by young guys riding ATVs through downtown and the police do absolutely nothing.
If I owned a secure high rise condo down by the river with parking I think I could be happy. Otherwise ...
Oh the lack of delis in surrounding areas also sucks...
Case in point: they have a big Chase Utley display here in the kids section... Presenting one of the dirtiest baseball players in modern era as a role model? That's Philly

The things utley did for the community as a Phillie cannot be understated. He was a huge figure in the community when I lived in Philly.

That's odd.
How is it odd? He’s beloved here. Exactly the kind of player that you love on your team and hate on others.
I don't really follow baseball too closely & it struck me as odd they'd have a presentation on a baseball player at the Ben Franklin Institute. Just wouldn't something I'd be expecting. If he's beloved in Philly, sure it makes sense. I just didn't know that.

Exactly the kind of player Philly loves..a dirty one..
Bad, sleazy guy..universally known around the league as a dirty player...
Werth, Victorious, Rollins.. those were the kind of players your talking about... Utley crossed the line too many times..

You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. How was he a sleazy guy? And what’s funny is the dirty play you remember most is when he was in LA.
Werth was the one who is the sleeze. He was banging Utleys wife. One of the reasons he didn’t get the LTD from the Phils.

You're talking about the 2nd time he tried to break Tejada's leg (he was unsuccessful the first time)... That's just a piece of it.. it's nothing new, don't let time glorify a dirty player...

It’s a science museum for kids with an exhibit on sports science.
Yeah I was saying they should have had a player that kids should actually try to emulate and play like.. not a guy who would get hit on purpose and routinely try and injure players at 2nd...

Attempting to break his leg? Lol. Ok. Is he Joey Lawrence or something?
It’s obvious you have a Vandetta against him. Your opinion is clearly skewed. He’s out of the most beloved players in Philly history for his hard play and charity work.

Yes...Philly is unique in love for a dirty player like this..that's my point!
Now we can move on.
(I'm consistent.. get ripped on here every time we talk about the bullshit , cheap crap Conforto pulled to win a game for Mets last year, and I have always been a huge Conforto fan..if he pulled crap like that regularly and slid dirty into 2nd every time he got a chance, I wouldnt have liked him)

I also love Rocky... I'd give them credit for Always Sunny too but Philly setting was an afterthought to the plot..
The people have been friendlier since my NY accent faded, but still not a friendly city
We’ll there was the Broad St. Bullies back in the day but I’m dating myself there. Fucking Dave Schultz.
Eg, I’m a big old school Genesis fan and on their tour in 07 Philly was the only city on their North American tour they played three nights. All were sold out as well.

Funny, they say the same things about NY and NJ.
Philly has a lot of attractive aspects, but like any other city, it has a personality you may or may not like.

Philly sucks, why would I care what they say about NY/NJ? Hell South Jersey also sucks just for being so close to Philly.

Cool. They should put that post in travel guides just so people are fully informed prior to visiting the place.
