I'm interested in BBI's take on the bar debate my Giants buddies and I had over the weekend.
Current NYG roster in place and current contract status for each QB remains.
if you had your pick...
A. Daniel Jones
B. Trey Lance
C. Jordan Love
D. Kenny Pickett
E. Kirk Cousins
The initial conversation was interesting, but then the tequila kicked in ....
I really don’t see much of a difference between him and Stafford to be honest. Put Cousins on that Rams team last year and you would likely see similar results.
The argument for Lance and Love were the same - stuck behind more talented guys, more accolades coming out of college than Jones, both seem to be more modern NFL on the move QBs but neither have been given a shot to play b/c of their circumstances.
The argument for Pickett was young QB with a young team. Thibs/Thomas/McKinney/Toney/Robinson/Pickett will all have a chance to grow together and change the culture. Timing would be right for when they become vets and (hopefully) good.
The argument for Cousins was legit known NFL QB. Has won in the league and everyone at the table (including the Casamigos) were tired of losing and he gives them the best chance to win now.
+1 I'm with you
Pickett
Jones
Gap
Cousins
Love
Then Pickett - because he is the new flavor.
Lance/Love - because I don't watch college football so I have no opinion other than what Sy told me in their draft year.
Cousins - definitely your best chance to win now, but more interested in building for the future.
And I am in the minority that thinks DJ could be a legit NFL starter. My hope (approaching expectation) is that we will regret not giving him his option year.
Cousins is underrated which is annoying because he isn't THAT good, but he's treated by most as some turd. He's at least average which is a shite side better than many bad QBs in this game.
If I have to pick a QB for the future, I'd be willing to roll with Lance, who has some very interesting plus skills worth developing.
I would probably take Pickett, Lance and then Cousins in that order.
umm...
If its getting a guy for the future, Lance, Pickett, Love, Cousins, Jones
Id just rather watch him try to develop in a new regime than watch any of the other guys.
And guys, I dont care how many TDs Kirk Cousins throws, he stinks.
Cousins is the best QB on that list, but I'm not paying him $35MM to go 8-9 on a bad team.
Neither. The OP said current contract status applies. Cousins' contract would destroy this team. The current talent difference between Cousins and Jones is not enough to make up for how bad the rest of the team would have to be to accommodate the contract. There is no situation where adding Cousins with his current contract would put the Giants in a better position than they currently are, short or long term.
The Giants would be out of range to get one of the big college prospects (so you would end up with another DJ type pick) hence the Pickett add, trade for an NFL QB that might be on the market (not sure the what 49ers or Packers are doing w/ their QB situation) or go the FA market (Mayfield, Jimmy G, Cousins next year), and lastly - you run it back with Jones.
If Lamar actually becomes a FA - the debates ends.
So while it is a fantasy, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for the Giants to faces with this dilemma next season.
Hard no to Cousins (contract)
Love and Pickett are wholly uninspiring.
Pickett
Cousins
Love
My biggest concern with Lance is that he has never been in an offense that has asked him to throw 30+ times per game with any regularity. Can he win a game like some of the recent matches we have had with New Orleans where they were very high scoring?
How would Cousins have looked in our offense the last two years?
Quote:
Over Cousins? What have you seen on the field to make that choice? Or are you just trying to put the team in the best draft pick position for 2023?

Likely better than Jones has looked.
IMO (a required BBI disclaimer these days) there's not much difference between Cousins and Jones when it comes to designed drop backs...both being sitting ducks in the pocket.
On designed runs however, Jones is awesome. His straight line speed at one point was clocked at an elite rate.
I don't think there's another QB like Jones in that regard.
