Which QB would you pick to start the season for the NYG..

Dnew15 : 6/21/2022 12:55 pm
I'm interested in BBI's take on the bar debate my Giants buddies and I had over the weekend.

Current NYG roster in place and current contract status for each QB remains.

if you had your pick...

A. Daniel Jones
B. Trey Lance
C. Jordan Love
D. Kenny Pickett
E. Kirk Cousins

The initial conversation was interesting, but then the tequila kicked in ....

Probably Pickett

Then once the data shows he's not any good, turn to the draft for next year.
Probably Pickett

Then once North Jersey decides he's not any good, turn to the draft for next year.

I'd pick

Lance and Jones second.
I’ll take Cousins
eric2425ny : 6/21/2022 1:58 pm : link
yes he is overpaid, but so are most QB’s not on rookie contracts. Cousins is better than he is given credit for because everyone always focuses on his contract.

I really don’t see much of a difference between him and Stafford to be honest. Put Cousins on that Rams team last year and you would likely see similar results.
Pickett?

small hands. smells like cabbage
Jones

It was interesting to hear the logic behind each arguement:
Dnew15 : 6/21/2022 2:20 pm : link
The argument for Jones was he's been here - he's got the "franchise" look to him - hard worker - everyone seems to love him inside the building - jury still out on him, etc.

The argument for Lance and Love were the same - stuck behind more talented guys, more accolades coming out of college than Jones, both seem to be more modern NFL on the move QBs but neither have been given a shot to play b/c of their circumstances.

The argument for Pickett was young QB with a young team. Thibs/Thomas/McKinney/Toney/Robinson/Pickett will all have a chance to grow together and change the culture. Timing would be right for when they become vets and (hopefully) good.

The argument for Cousins was legit known NFL QB. Has won in the league and everyone at the table (including the Casamigos) were tired of losing and he gives them the best chance to win now.
Do I have to give back Neal or Thibs
Metnut : 6/21/2022 2:30 pm : link
to get Pickett? If not, I’d go with him.

Large Gap

Pickett
Jones

Gap

Cousins
Love
Jones
mfjmfj : 6/21/2022 3:39 pm : link
Because this is the season for hope to triumph over reason.

Then Pickett - because he is the new flavor.

Lance/Love - because I don't watch college football so I have no opinion other than what Sy told me in their draft year.

Cousins - definitely your best chance to win now, but more interested in building for the future.

And I am in the minority that thinks DJ could be a legit NFL starter. My hope (approaching expectation) is that we will regret not giving him his option year.
..
djm : 6/21/2022 3:42 pm : link
of course it's Cousins. He's the only PRO QB in that list that has actually enjoyed sustained success at the NFL level.

Cousins is underrated which is annoying because he isn't THAT good, but he's treated by most as some turd. He's at least average which is a shite side better than many bad QBs in this game.
Yeah...
bw in dc : 6/21/2022 3:57 pm : link
if you are just looking for a QB for the 2022 season, the answer is clearly Cousins. He has an established track record the last 5-7 years being one of the top 10-12 QBs in the league.

If I have to pick a QB for the future, I'd be willing to roll with Lance, who has some very interesting plus skills worth developing.
Cousins gives you the best chance of winning this year
Mike from Ohio : 6/21/2022 4:07 pm : link
Pickett and then Lance are probably the most valuable as far as potential vs. cost go more long term.

I would probably take Pickett, Lance and then Cousins in that order.
Cousins is so funny...
knowledgetimmons : 6/21/2022 4:22 pm : link
He's dogmeat, and would be treated as such if he were wearing a NYG uniform. But no, he's a top 12 QB in the NFL

umm...
Pickett
Scooter185 : 6/21/2022 4:28 pm : link
Let JS, BD, MK, et al get started on molding their QB instead of trying to fix someone else's.

And it isn't close.
For 1 year Cousins
Jerry in_DC : 6/21/2022 6:29 pm : link
Not close.

If its getting a guy for the future, Lance, Pickett, Love, Cousins, Jones
Lance
UConn4523 : 6/21/2022 6:32 pm : link
but still skeptical. He’s got upside though something that’s very limited or non existent in the other options. We also can’t afford Cousins (if money counts) nor would I want to pay him it if we could.
It's Jones
Alamo : 6/21/2022 6:33 pm : link
By a nose..Tight race..No outstanding horses in this race..
And I see current contract is part of it
UConn4523 : 6/21/2022 6:47 pm : link
so yeah, Cousins isn’t even doable, not even a candidate IMO.
Daniel Jones. he is better than the best of them!

Aaroninma : 6/21/2022 6:50 pm : link
Im taking Jones here and by a wide margin.

Id just rather watch him try to develop in a new regime than watch any of the other guys.

And guys, I dont care how many TDs Kirk Cousins throws, he stinks.
Depends what you mean by 'current contract status.'
Big Blue Blogger : 6/21/2022 7:19 pm : link
If I choose Lance, do I take on the 49ers' full cap hit in 2022-2024 (3 years / ~$28MM)? Or am I off the hook for the bonus the 49ers already paid, as would be the case in a trade, leaving a cost of just ~$11.3MM for three years? If it's the latter, I take Lance in a heartbeat. Otherwise, tough call. I might stick with Jones on the understanding that I'm probably back in the market next year.

Cousins is the best QB on that list, but I'm not paying him $35MM to go 8-9 on a bad team.
Cousins or Jones
Giant John : 6/21/2022 9:00 pm : link
Jones is obviously more athletic. Let the other newbies learn somewhere else. I want dividends after last few years.
Those who picked Jones
MyNameIsMyName : 6/21/2022 9:38 pm : link
Over Cousins? What have you seen on the field to make that choice? Or are you just trying to put the team in the best draft pick position for 2023?

Pepe LePugh : 6/21/2022 9:47 pm : link
Anybody but Cousins. His contract puts us back in cap hell. Puts up a ton of stats, but I don’t see that he’s elevated his teams.

Neither. The OP said current contract status applies. Cousins' contract would destroy this team. The current talent difference between Cousins and Jones is not enough to make up for how bad the rest of the team would have to be to accommodate the contract. There is no situation where adding Cousins with his current contract would put the Giants in a better position than they currently are, short or long term.
Danny F Jones

If it's a fantasy, anyway
David B. : 6/22/2022 6:41 am : link
I pick Mahommes.
It's a fantasy for sure...
Dnew15 : 6/22/2022 7:43 am : link
The debate stemmed from the question, what if the Giants win 7-8 games next year.

The Giants would be out of range to get one of the big college prospects (so you would end up with another DJ type pick) hence the Pickett add, trade for an NFL QB that might be on the market (not sure the what 49ers or Packers are doing w/ their QB situation) or go the FA market (Mayfield, Jimmy G, Cousins next year), and lastly - you run it back with Jones.

If Lamar actually becomes a FA - the debates ends.

So while it is a fantasy, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for the Giants to faces with this dilemma next season.
I will take Jones
Chip : 6/22/2022 8:31 am : link
I think very little of the other 4.
Lance is interesting...
Brown_Hornet : 6/22/2022 8:39 am : link
...Jones is at least hopeful.

Hard no to Cousins (contract)

Love and Pickett are wholly uninspiring.
Lance

Jones
Pickett
Cousins
Love
If current contract is required
Mike in NY : 6/22/2022 10:08 am : link
Jones or Lance. That is not to say that either are the best QB on the list, but for the price you are paying they offer the best ROI.

My biggest concern with Lance is that he has never been in an offense that has asked him to throw 30+ times per game with any regularity. Can he win a game like some of the recent matches we have had with New Orleans where they were very high scoring?

How would Cousins have looked in our offense the last two years?

Also, from the OP:
"Current NYG roster in place and current contract status for each QB remains."

Likely better than Jones has looked.
An immoble QB like Cousins would suck here, and BBI would hate
PatersonPlank : 6/22/2022 12:18 pm : link
him. I'd frankly go with Jones if restricted to that list
Jones is such an engima
Dnew15 : 6/22/2022 12:26 pm : link
when it comes to the term "mobile".

IMO (a required BBI disclaimer these days) there's not much difference between Cousins and Jones when it comes to designed drop backs...both being sitting ducks in the pocket.

On designed runs however, Jones is awesome. His straight line speed at one point was clocked at an elite rate.

I don't think there's another QB like Jones in that regard.
I don’t think
Keaton028 : 6/22/2022 1:13 pm : link
many people here have actually seen Cousins in a lot of games. His contract would be the only reason not to lean towards him on this list. He is miles better in everything else than all of the other names on this list.
On the roster

Tyrod Taylor. Trade Jones for magic beans(draft picks)
