I'm happy to report that there are no more rats in my garage!

I caught and released 4 total.

was that he had to bribe them to leave like a developer trying to renovate a building that has one hold-over rent control tenant left
it's summer

Released?!
It's been a while, and this seems like a good time for a story ...

I was maybe 7-8 and my Dad was at work. We heard scratching in a dining room hutch bottom storage area. Mom opened it and apparently a rodent of some stature had eaten its way up and into the construction of the house and INTO that cabinet. Not sure why, but Mom called the police.

A NY state trooper showed up. Yadda yadda yadda, he located and chased a cat-sized rat through the enclosed back porch and got an old metal garbage can on top of the thing. I'm standing there in the driveway, the cop has one of Dad's baseball bats from the garage, then he tells Mom to lift the garbage can enough so he could see it. Thing sprints out until it sees him. Stops. The cop beats the fucker to death in front of my rather impressionable eyes.

First time I ever heard the phrase "river rat."

In high school I read Stephen King's Night Shift ... one short story had gigantic rats living 4-5 stories below the city.

Moral of the story - You don't fucking RELEASE rats! You bash the living fuck out of them!!

LOL I once had to kill a huge probably-rabid rat in my yard with a shovel. It was an ugly scene.
I just watched "The Batman"

Rats, like squirrels and chipmunks, don't get rabies. You kill them simply because they're rats.

I had no idea! It came across my back yard in the middle of the day, It danced around and faced my dogs when they barked and snarled at it. That didn't seem right to me so I pulled them away and killed it. I always assumed rabies but now I have no idea what was up with it.
Gotta admit. I never heard of releasing a rat. Like for what?

Good behavior? A chance to turn his life around? Now he s someone else problem.
Release so they could come back?

Fuck that !
The Biggest Rats on Earth are in Korea...
BamaBlue : 6/22/2022 8:44 am : link
When I was stationed in a very remote area in on the DMZ in Korea, we lived in an old quonset hut. The only food we had came from our small mess hall. There was a curfew from midnight to 5 AM and we were surrounded by rice paddies, South Korean patrols and land mines, so there was literally no place to go. I used to bring a sandwich or some fruit and store it in a small metal night stand next to my bed. Pretty quickly, I noticed that the drawer was open and 'something' had been eating on my stuff. There was no wood, and the drawer was pretty heavy, so I had a real mystery on my hands... 'something' was opening this heavy drawer and eating my stuff. My first thought was someone was pranking me, but the guys I was stationed lived by two imperatives; you don't mess with your buddy's girlfriend or his food.

So, I went to the mess sergeant and he suggested vermin and said to set a rat trap. This rat trap he gave me is a GIANT sized standard guillotine-style mouse trap. So, that same night I get the trap, I put some peanut butter and a piece of sticky Korean candy on the bait shelf, turned-off the lights and started to drift-off to sleep. Not 5 minutes later, I hear this loud 'snap' that sounded like a gunshot and a muffled scream.

I turn on the lights and there is a 4+ pound nasty looking RAT trying to fight he way out of this giant rat trap. When I mean big, this guy was more than 2 feet long from nose to tail. So, there I am holding the light switch and gazing in amazement at this giant rat. I don't know what to do, so I walk up to the rat and go eye-to-eye with him and watch him die as blood runs from his mouth. All the time he's making a sound that is like a high-pitched scream.

So, I show my buddies the rat and they are freaked out, because these things are roaming our hooch. Well, this is the Army in the 1980's and we're told to suck-it-up and stop complaining. Then the HQ staff fix comes-in... no more food in the rooms and no more rat traps to 'attract' the rats. Over the rest of my tour, I saw several of these jumbo rats roaming the hallway and in the bathroom. We just learned to live together and we all got along...

Release - No
upnyg : 6/22/2022 10:24 am : link
I made the mistake of releasing red squirrels i caught in my attic. Drove them 2 miles away to a park, they found their way back. Ended up catching over 6 in 3 months. Im pretty sure 2 were returners.

So I went 10 miles away to release. Now I just have 1 that snuck into my garage over the winter and lived under the hood of my wifes summer car. He's out now, but If catch him, no more relasing.
In many states it is illegal
VTChuck : 6/22/2022 10:51 am : link
to catch and release.

Mice, rats, squirrels, woodchucks should be dispatched humanely and buried deep.

Smaller varmints are not the not the only ones that create catch and release problems.

You're not familiar with the term, "Crazy as a shithouse rat?"
Rats! They fought the dogs and killed the cats,
Marty in Albany : 6/22/2022 5:04 pm : link
And bit the babies in the cradles,
And ate the cheeses out of the vats,
And licked the soup from the cooks' own ladle's,
Split open the kegs of salted sprats,
Made nests inside men's Sunday hats,
And even spoiled the women's chats
By drowning their speaking
With shrieking and squeaking
In fifty different sharps and flats."
