Rob Gronkowski announced he was going to retire from the NFL after a stellar career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New England Patriots.

Gronkowski told sports journalist Jordan Schultz the news and announced on Instagram he was going to walk away...

for Miami to trade for Brady. Yes it's crazy but it's the crazy I can see happening, although it might not even be possible with the cap...

Just seems weird that Brady came back to Tampa for one more run when they appear to be somewhat on the way down. No more Antonio Brown or Gronk. The other WR is coming off a bad injury and the HC stepped down. Meanwhile Miami looks to be on the way up, just added a game-breaking WR to compliment Waddle and they appear to need a QB.

It's a reach I know.

Not a reach at all, I think there's been speculation about that. I'm sure Brady would have some say in that, but Miami is arguably an upgrade for Tom and Giselle, more of an international city and more of an entertainment hub. If Tom is looking at an entertainment career, it would be a smart base. Don't know where their kids are in school or whether that is an important consideration for them. It would be for me, but TB is so driven and competitive, I dunno.

Add in that Stephen Ross has been infatuated with Brady. I don't think it will happen, but it's not crazy either.

I think he came back to Tampa because the NFC is looking extremely weak and even a weaker Bucs team could potentially make the Superbowl. Too good a shot for Brady to pass up.
Great career

If Gronk catches that Hail Mary, I'm not on BBI today. I'm still in a padded cell after being committed the morning after XLVI.

Yes, he will be back around week 10 if the Bucs are serious contenders, which they will be in that division.

If Gronk had good wheels-remember, he was injured in the AFC Championship Game-he might have come up with that. But he didn't & we won our 4th Lombardi so F off Patriot fans! Haha.
Perhaps

In the end the best team won! That 2011 team was so underrated. Gronk had such a great career and I loved the way he played. Just happy it turned out the way it did.

If I’m remembering correctly Gronk was dancing away that night.
Who really retires first?
short lease : 6/21/2022 7:34 pm : link

Brady or Gronkoski? We all know all the veterans who had a successful career announce their retirement at this time of the year and then sign a deal with a team after Training Camp ends - Hell, I think even Strahan did it one year?

They do not want to tolerate TC.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/21/2022 7:39 pm : link
Strahan skipped '07 training camp because he didn't want to do it & gladly paid the fines. In the '07 Giants 'America's Game', he said he was unsure about returning, but that's complete bunk IMO.

He never retired.

Best TE I’ve seen. And for a party bro, surprisingly likeable.

But this feels like a 50/50 retirement due to Brady being almost a cult leader like figure in his eyes, atleast from what I can see.

Genuinely interested in his post-NFL career if this is truly the end. Somehow someway it feels like he’ll succeed regardless of the endeavor. Unless it’s announcing, that would be a train wreck.

Gronk & I are like a decade apart in terms of age & I'd still love to spend a night out on the town with him. It'd be a riot.

I hope he doesn't go into broadcasting, as I think he'd be a disaster. But he seems like a good dude & am too curious as to what his next act is.

Yeah ... but, I think we are talking semantics here? Unless there are some rules that I am unaware of that prevents players from retiring and then un-retiring in the same season?

Hell, as I am typing this I am also thinking of Brett Farvre. Didn't he retire like 3 times?

I am not sure if any of the players that I mentioned actually technically retired or it was all lip-service. I am sure there has to be paperwork to be signed and until that is done - nothing is official no matter how "adamant" they sound?
terrific career.....

My wife almost did a video shoot with him. Didn't work out because his availability was slim and there were other commitments on my wife's end. She had good things to say about him/his team, but its clear the guy is constantly busy so I have no doubt he will be successful outside of football - he already is.

Same. Devastating in the pass game and blocked like a left tackle in the run game. The prototype of what a TE should be.

Imagine of the Hernandez stuff didn't happen and those 2 were able to continue playing together. That 2011 offense was just nasty with those two + Welker and that was just their Sophomore seasons.
Without taking anything away from Rob Gronkowski...
Klaatu : 6/22/2022 8:49 am : link
I'd have to say that Jason Witten was the best TE of the modern era, in my opinion.

Neither one was as tough as Mark Bavaro, though. He's still my favorite Giant.
No chance on Witten
UConn4523 : 6/22/2022 9:05 am : link
great player but not an elite game breaker like Gronk. Might be different if Gronk sucked at blocking, but he didn’t.
If the best ability is availability, it's Witten by a mile.
Klaatu : 6/22/2022 9:15 am : link
Again, nothing against Gronk. He's a surefire 1st ballot Hall of Famer, but if I had my druthers, I'd take Witten.
The 1st thing that comes to mind...
Brown_Hornet : 6/22/2022 9:19 am : link
...Chase Blackburn.
I don't even think Witten is the 2nd best TE
UConn4523 : 6/22/2022 9:22 am : link
of the era. He just wasn't a big enough playmaker and the availability argument is meh. Gronk has been injured, but he's so much more dominant of a player. Even larger disparity in playoff performance.

Gates, Gonzalez, Gronk are firmly ahead and its possible with another top en year or two, Kelce hops Witten too (I'd argue he's already better).
Brown
lono801 : 6/22/2022 9:23 am : link
Exactly my thought…but the typical self loathing Giants fan will say it was because Gronk was playing hurt.

Give me the Sharpe brothers or Gates

I'm with little Bill, come on he didn't have to block Reggie White, LT and Banks like Bavaro.
Teams use TE's differently
Lines of Scrimmage : 6/22/2022 12:20 pm : link
Gronk, Gates, Gonzales were great players however one ranks them.

It is a brutal position. When Parcells drafted Witten he told him he a "formula" for the position as he already had Francis, Bavaro, Coates.

Witten waited but never received the formula until he broke his jaw. Parcells told him I had this guy Bavaro who had a jaw problem. He missed one game. Witten played after one week after learning the formula. I don't think he ever missed another.

Parcells always said the great ones find a way to be dependable and available.
Bavaro….
thrunthrublue : 6/22/2022 12:22 pm : link
Refusing to be tackled by most of the niner defense…. one of the best tight end receptions of all time.
Witten was very good for very long
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 6/22/2022 1:43 pm : link
If I had to guess, I'd put money on him being the all-time leader in "3rd down receptions that lead to a 1st down" against the Giants in team history. So many times this guy would kill us with timely catches.

That being said, I don't think it's particularly close between him and Gronk. He was never on Gronk's level at his best. The longevity factor is a big one for sure, but Gronk was simply better when he was healthy by enough of a margin that it's still an easy choice for me.
Great player…
trueblueinpw : 6/22/2022 1:52 pm : link
The thing I could never figure out with Gronk was how he always seemed to be so wide open. And yeah, I get it that he was a size miss match for DBs and a speed mismatch for LBs. But there have to be like a zillion highlights of Gronk catching TDs uncovered in the end zone. Or running down the seam to make huge catch with like no one even trailing. Seemed to always be open. I would image a lot of Gronks success was due to having telepathy with Brady. Once he caught the ball he was punished and made defenses pay a price to bring him down. He was also a plus player when blocking. Always willing and mostly able in both run blocking and pass blocking. I can’t think of a better TE I’ve seen over the past 40 years. Gronk was the complete package. All time great if you ask me.
