NFT: AEW Forbidden Door

Anakim : 6/22/2022 10:24 pm
Is Tony Khan really so inept at booking? Does he have no self-awareness? AEW does such a terrible job explaining who these NJPW guys are and why we, as in the casual viewer and WWE castoff viewers, should care. That's why the audience isn't growing and the ratings are in the shitter. AEW is geared only towards the marks who know who these NJPW wrestlers are, which is a very small part of the wrestling population, let alone the general population. The casual viewer and even the WWE castoff viewers have no idea what's going on.

And BTW, I'm not being xenophobic. This isn't limited to the Japanese wrestlers because I really like Okada and Tanahashi. It's really about all the NJPW guys. If I'm a casual viewer, who the hell is Jay White and Aussie Open and why should I pay money to watch them wrestle? I'm not even saying they shouldn't do Forbidden Door, but the buildup to this PPV has been horrendous.
The fans of NJPW

want to see the Japanese wrestlers come to the USA. New Japan keeps pushing the English speaking wrestlers on the US fans. I think that they are mistaken with this direction. New Japan fans are hardly interested in Aussie Open.

I will watch this PPV in a month or so when the replay becomes free on NJPW World streaming site.

Is NJPW even aired in the US? It's one of those obscure channels, no? No one except the real die-hard non-WWE wrestling fans watch it and Tony Khan has done a terrible job showing why the casual viewer should care about this PPV.

I get NJ on Fight Network. It is also on some other channel that is bigger than Fight Network. I agree that it has been a horrible build to this. Just booking champion versus champion non-title matches would be way better than what this is. However they did sell out as soon as tickets went on sale. Getting casual fans to buy the PPV is a different story.
Aew is trash
eli4life : 6/23/2022 3:43 am : link
Great idea even better timing due to wwe having to make all those cuts due to the pandemic but you can’t overcome bad ownership. Just see his dad as an example but then again his dad failed bad enough that he went and got football people to make the football decisions. I’m thinking it’s wcw without the accomplishments.

Sad thing is the solution is right under their nose. Make regal the commish or whatever you want to call him and let him book the matches. Immediately it would be a 100 times better product
i will say this over and over again... Tony Khan is a moron
GMAN4LIFE : 6/23/2022 7:43 am : link
he is playing with toys and no clue on what to do with them.

Half of these guys are barely getting a reaction and no one cares about most of them. The marks will argue with you all the way saying you are dumb and this is good wrestling. However, good wrestling wont compel a person to watch or buy a ppv.

i care about aew because of the long term goal of it. But it will slowly go down. but dont take my word for it. look at the ratings
It certainly not for casual fans
Tom in DC : 6/23/2022 10:35 am : link
and I wouldn't expect to many surprises. I don't think there is any chance that Mox loses to Tanahashi. Nor do I see anyway Jay White drops the belt during the match. Will Osprey vs Orange Cassidy just seems weird.
try telling that to marks that think everything AEW does is

It's like a secret club. Like we should all know what Bullet Club is and who these people are. It's incumbent on the audience to find out who these people are...Such a stupid model.

If Tony Khan has unlimited money and wants to indulge in his fantasies, go for it. I don't mind. It certainly beats the same old shit from the WWE. But as a businessman, Khan has a lot to learn.
This is just a nod to the hardcore wrestling fanbase

And it’s a first time event with NJPW to hopefully have a good experience with them and keep the door open in the future so they can trade talent back and forth and have shows like this in the future if all goes well.

It’s the same shit every time an AEW thread is created here. You get the same group of people coming in and talking about how terrible the product is. I’m going to assume those people are avid WWE fans. Forbidden Door has run into a number of issues including guys like CM Punk and Bryan Danielson being hurt which has messed up a couple of matches they planned for quite a while now. But sure, let’s talk about it like it’s some joke. By the time, Jay White has appeared on AEW TV a handful of times now and they explained who he is before. If you’re a casual fan, that’s perfectly fine. But don’t complain you don’t know who somebody is because you aren’t watching or you aren’t paying attention if you do somehow watch the show. The show isn’t going to be perfect but going after the hardcore fanbase isn’t a bad thing. This show is going to be another million dollar gate for AEW so clearly there’s an audience for this stuff. If you don’t get it or if you don’t give a shit about it, that’s fine. But the United Center is sold out and plenty of people are interested.

problem is exactly this. Would anyone know who Okada was yesterday if you were a casual fan?

They didn’t need to know before yesterday because he wasn’t around. He showed up last night and they explained he’s arguably the greatest wrestler in modern history. Again, this isn’t exactly aimed at casual fans. If people hate it that much, it’ll be over and back to normal next week. But I assume most people posting in here don’t watch AEW weekly to care about that.

I mean, you can say fans of any company in regards to any sport or form of entertainment are sensitive. I can make a post here about how much WWE sucks and how awful the shows and booking are there and I guarantee you’ll have people posting there being sensitive and defending it. There’s a reason AEW has won promotion of the year the past few years and they’ve only been around for three years now. And there’s a reason Tony Khan has won Booker of the year over everyone else the past two years. But feel free to go off about how god awful the company and Tony Khan is lol. There’s very little basis to it but enjoy the circle jerk with like minded fans of other promotions here.

You clearly didn’t read what I said but okay. Seems pretty insane that 3 or 4 people can “this thing sucks! And if anyone says otherwise, they’re just sensitive!” lmao. It’s grade school logic. But I am curious to you guys that hate AEW or Tony Khan… what wrestling do you watch? Enlighten me about what’s better and why. Really, I’d like to learn if I’m missing something here.

Not true at all. People on here and elsewhere shit on WWE and have been shitting on the WWE product for about 2 decades straight now, and no one defends them.

AEW fans are the most sensitive fans in ANY form of entertainment. It is literally like a cult. Not the same for WWE fans AT ALL. That's bullshit.

All AEW fans are like that based on what? That’s a bullshit argument that formed on Twitter by WWE fans. Im a wwe fan and casual aew fan. The wrestling in AEW is great. I wouldnt say top notch but great. In WWE, the storylines (the main ones) are just slightly better. The womens division in WWE is leaps and bounds better than AEW.

but again, AEW and WWE is apples and oranges. They cater to two different fanbases. One is for the hardcore marks (which was already said by many wrestlers) and the other is more catered to kids and trying to get casual fans.

one isnt better than the other because they do their best for their fanbase.

But your argument and reaction is already demonstrating exactly what Dave said to begin with. if you dont see it, its there is no point talking about it as its just the same thing that was said in the fan community.
I like AEW
GiantGrit : 6/23/2022 3:08 pm : link
Very refreshing when it came on the scene. The long term stay power is what proves difficult and you're starting to see that with AEW.

Tony's accumulated a lot of really good talent and supposedly Cesaro may take Bryan Danielson's place at Forbidden Door.

The problem is they only have 3 hours a week to showcase the talent they have and that was difficult before Forbidden Door.

Forbidden Door is a GREAT idea in theory, the problem is they rushed it. Anakim is right, they've built this PPV terribly. It needs long term storytelling, like 6-12 months of random invasions, overlapping stables, etc. And now you're stuck with a PPV that has poor build and WAY too many overlapping storylines with Blood & Guts only too weeks away.

AEW needs another 2 hour show (which is a tough sell given their ratings haven't been great recently). Khan may be waiting for Ring of Honor to get a TV deal but the roster is way too bloated and everyone is suffering b/c of it.

Last point - it was perfect story to have Punk when the title only to suffer an actual injury forcing him to relinquish. The interim idea is terrible.

Christian, Ricky Starks, Malakai Black (and house of black overall) deserve big pushes. Starks is a star in the making. Christian's heel turn was fantastic and he should be in the title picture soon.
AEW
GiantGrit : 6/23/2022 3:12 pm : link
Needs a hard reset after Forbidden Door and new storylines.

Death Triangle vs. House of Black - way overdone
J.A.S. vs. Eddie Kingston and co. - way overdone

Young Bucks having the tag team titles again should be very short lived. AEW has very solid young talent in their tag team division. In fact what a waste it was to have the Young Bucks beat the Jurassic Express (I think the plan was for the Hardy's to briefly hold but screw that idea as well).

Enough with the Bullet Club & Elite shtick its boring (and it seems like they are gonna push hard which is a big mistake imo)
Injuries
Tom in DC : 6/23/2022 3:58 pm : link
With Bryan, Ibushi, and Omega all hurt, you are missing 3 of the top 5 wrestlers in the world imo. You are also down Punk's starpower. AEW had its work cut out from them and honestly the build hasn't bee great.

i also think its a crime to introduce Will Osprey to western audiences with a match hastily thrown together with Orange Cassidy. Makes no sense.
Well, that death match was quite...something
