Disney, Apple and Amazon have all submitted bids to become the new broadcast rights owner of the National Football League’s out-of-market Sunday Ticket package. They’re just waiting to find out who wins.
The three companies submitted bids weeks ago, according to people familiar with the matter. The NFL continues to be in discussion with all three bidders as it decides which partner it will choose, said the people, who asked not to be named because the negotiations are private. |
When the NFL signed contracts with CBS and Fox, the deals included language that mandates Sunday Ticket have a premium price so as not to pull too many eyeballs away from the local market Sunday afternoon games acquired by the broadcast networks, three of the people said.
That means any owner of Sunday Ticket rights won’t be able to significantly lower the price on the out-of-market package, which typically costs about $300 per year. |
DirecTV is interested in maintaining a relationship with bars and restaurants… Sunday Ticket is also popular with sports gamblers who want to see multiple games at the same time.
DirecTV would also consider acting as a residential pass-through. Under such an agreement, it could transfer all revenue for Sunday Ticket to the rights owner but still offer it to customers. |
More details in the article.
There were rumors Apple has already won the deal, but that doesn’t appear to be true

Cord cutting was all the talk a few years ago, but with a million different streaming services and one thing on one one thing on another it's not even saving anyone money these days.
wouldn't it be just as easy to stream over any mobile device and share to a bigger screen?
fingers crossed for apple and them giving it free with an apple tv subscription for at least a couple years.
DirecTV Sunday Ticket has a mobile app. If you are a subscriber you can watch the games from anywhere. You don’t have to lug a dish around everywhere, lol.
Unless they make significant improvements including a deal with Google for an app, that has to be the worse outcome for fans.
Have to root for Disney and Amazon.

Airplay or Chromecast to get games from your phone to a TV is a lot easier than dragging a dish to a parking lot. I'd think tailgaters would be thrilled to have NFL out of area programming enter this century.

The Sunday ticket app sucks. I typically restart it a few times every Sunday and it’s the only streaming app that’s pixelated for like 30 seconds when you change games. It’s mind boggling they weren’t able to build something at least on the level of mlbtv or ESPN+.
Unless they make significant improvements including a deal with Google for an app, that has to be the worse outcome for fans.

Apple wouldn’t be producing the games. Just streaming them.

Yes..and they have been terrible at that with MLB..
No ability to pause/rewind/record... No app for 50% of mobile devices in the country... And constant freezing/skipping...
The cell service at MetLife is not nearly good enough in the parking lot to stream games via cellular data. Thats also the case in most parking lots at football stadiums that i'kjkve been to.
You would be buffering every few minutes. Add in that so many people would be trying to do so and that would mean an even worse signal.
It’s a downgrade IMO

With all do respect, todays streaming services are far better then that.
I record constantly and I can certainly pause, rewind etc. Not to mention paying half of the price.
It wouldn’t be like a PPV fight type situation, just an additional service add on.

What streaming service do you use? Where I live I don’t think I have anything better available than what I have and I can’t record anything I stream.

This makes sense on its face.
But can anyone explain how this squares with the tales one reads about DTV subscribers getting Sunday Ticket for free?

So I don't follow the comments on pricing above either...

I don't know about that Mook. I felt the same way but it seems like I could have YouTube TV plus Netflix, Disney, and Prime and still save relative to Directv's absurd pricing .
I need to remember to do the annual call this weekend to directv for $80mo in credits bc i still have it too

You could buy a StarLink instead of hauling a DTV dish to the tailgate.
That would power internet fast enough to stream.
No one saying that..
Apple would be terrible because of their streaming platform, unless they upgrade it significantly.
No ability to pause/rewind/record, no app for 50% of mobile devices, and frequent skipping/freezing
Also if you are not lugging the dish to tailgate then wouldnt you be using the same network option that you would use for Apple?
I knew a lot of people didnt want to cut the cord, nothing wrong with that, but i didnt know the pure vitriol that people had toward streaming until recently. Not saying there is anything wrong with someone feeling that way, i could care less how a person feels, i just found it interesting.
How do we get out of market games with that setup?

that's not been my experience streaming from either chromecast or appletv (box). i've watched live and dont pause/rewind/record so can't speak to that part. video experience has been just as good as mlbtv/youtubetv and both are light years ahead of sunday ticket app.

im pretty sure the mls is going to be in the existing app. and on the positive side they are eliminating regional blackouts, increasing the broadcasts to 1080p, and everything is going to be produced centrally by the MLS (not apple).

Ugh! Apple coverage of baseball is pitiful. The announcers especially.

I've posted this before, but for any out of town chord cutting fans looking to stream and record games a simple combination of an Amazon Fire, YouTubeTV, and a VPN like Surfshark will do the trick.
How do we get out of market games with that setup?
The long version is you can easily install a VPN app on an Amazon Fire Stick (unlike Roku). The best VPN app in my experience is Surfshark.
When you have the Surfshark VPN installed, you can easily toggle between geographic locations to set your virtual IP.
YouTubeTV, Fubo etc. provide your local networks based on your IP.
I was living Austin for the last two years. I would simply set my VPN to New York, New York and my local channels were from NY. You can watch any game anywhere just setting your IP to that market:
The Surfshark app is about $50 a year, and YouTubeTV is $65 a month. The Fire Stick is like $20.
In order to watch all regular season and Leagues Cup matches (along with select games from MLS Next Pro and MLS Next, MLS’s developmental league and academy league, respectively) users will have to purchase the unnamed MLS streaming app on Apple TV. However, viewers will not have to purchase Apple TV+ to purchase the streaming service, nor will they have to purchase a physical Apple TV product — any device that can connect to the Internet will be able to show the games. While the exact cost of the MLS streaming service is unknown, existing Apple TV+ subscribers who do not purchase the MLS subscription will still have access to some of the matches, and a further limited number of matches will be available for free for all fans, even those without an Apple TV+ subscription. MLS full-season ticket holders will have the MLS streaming app included with their purchase of full-season tickets. In addition, this deal removes all local blackout restrictions, which were in effect for MLS games on ESPN+ in their last deal.

So you can get MSG and SNY with this setup? Or is this just for the Giants games?
But I guess we'll have to wait and see

Since I've had directv with Tivo, then dvr (about 20 years), i haven't watched anything completely live.
I start a game (or show) when I want to. I might have brunch or take a nap, eg., and start a 1 o'clock game at 1:30 or 2 (and ff through commercials and halftime).
It will be a major step back if I'm unable to do that.

This. Not having DVR is taking us back to the 1980s. How is that better than Directv?
Their subscription is $70, and includes a 1000 hours of DVR.

You can use a program called OBS Studio to record any stream. I did it for a live Mr Bungle Halloween show.
As these tech platforms do more and more live streaming DVR will be added.

But since I don't live in the New York market, I can't get the games on those streaming platforms to be able to use their DVRs

THIS is the correct answer.

The fact is DirecTV works better than any of these streams and it has a DVR

if Sunday ticket is not offered through DirecTV, say goodbye to sunday ticket at tailgates. Which is a huge thing for my tailgate. No sunday ticket at tailgates likely kills the tailgate entirely. Half of my group doesnt even go into the games and those people arent showing up if I dont have the other games on in the parking lot.

Again, the cell signal in the parking lot isn't anywhere close to being able to stream games well. And it will only get worse when everyone in the parking lot is trying to do the same thing.
Short term pain for long term gain.
The fact is DirecTV works better than any of these streams and it has a DVR
Whoever wins the bid for the Sunday Ticket product will absolutely provide a digital archive and fast-forwarding on delay features. These are table stakes for a live stream platform.
Amazon and Apple don’t have those features now because they don’t need to have them. If they win, they’ll be there.
The live stream platforms (YouTubeTV, Fubo) have seamless and elegant recording and replay features that blow away DTV.

Yeah so the downside is IF these companies DON'T improve their offerings.
As far as I know, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Apple has ZERO applications on Google Play app store. I suppose that can change, and i hope it does, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Again, the cell signal in the parking lot isn't anywhere close to being able to stream games well. And it will only get worse when everyone in the parking lot is trying to do the same thing.

But you cant get out of market games on live stream platforms, you can with DTV. And I only need one service for my tv watching, not 3 or 4. DTV has a really easy DVR, how are the others better? Have you ever had DTV?
