Travis Toivonen is a name people might not know, but the wide receiver was a frequent target this spring as he made the most of some rehabbing veterans around him. Originally signed as an undrafted rookie out of North Dakota by the Seattle Seahawks, Toivonen spent time on and off the Giants' practice squad last season. At 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, he provides a big frame for Daniel Jones in a new-look offense.

Don't we get one of these every offseason? I think it's more likely that Toivonen becomes another Alonzo Russell, or at best goes back to the PS (after all, we'll need another tall WR when Golladay gets injured again).

sure odds are Toivonen turns out to have the same impact as Alonzo Russell, but there's the fools hope he could be the next Victor Cruz too.

You guys forget about Kevin Walter already?

This is something I'll admit has annoyed me about both Schoen and Gettleman; neither has really had a backup plan if/when Golladay gets knocked out of a game or to replace him in a year or two... unless Schoen and Daboll eventually want to phase Golladay out of the offense entirely.

You mean Kevin Walter who played in 152 games in 10 seasons with nearly 100 starts? I would take a reliable player like that any time.

Gettleman had him one year and he flopped with injuries and perhaps dislike of Judge & staff? Schoen drafted well, I think, tough no one can say that for about 3 or even 4 years when the "returns" are in and graded.

Schoen inherited a mess and if Jones isn't the guy the rebuild may take a long, long time. Lets say we go 4-13 and have a Top 4 pick you know we will have to take a QB. Rebuild.

There are several taller WR's besides Toivonen on the roster right now. One or two might make the final 53, depending on ST value, or could end up on the PS. Sills, Johnson, Foster, Doss - that's their backup plan, along with a stronger presence at TE.

It's doubtful that Golladay will be on the team after this year, but as long as he's here and he's healthy he'll be part of the offense.
The whole Tight End unit situation going into the past offseason
NYGgolfer : 6/28/2022 8:07 am : link
is really astonishing. I don't know if I can recall a positional unit on the NY Giants that ever had to be reconstructed from scratch. Maybe there has been, but nothing comes to mind very quickly.

And because of cap limitations in Year 1, Schoen couldn't put a lot of resources behind this unit either. The top three tight ends are two cheap free agent hires in Ricky Seals-Jones and Jordan Akins and a mid-round rookie in Daniel Bellinger. Somewhat fortunate it was a deep draft for TEs this year and he was able to grab a decent prospect that late.

How can any roster unit be managed so poorly? What was the thinking here if the past regime stayed in place?
