Beltran was a great player, then got caught in the cheating scandal. He is AWFUL as an announcer. Offers no insight, repeats what has already been said or obvious and never offers critical insight. It’s really bad and trying to understand why is stays on the air. He is that bad. It actually is truly painful to listen to. Are the Yankees trying to make him a reclamation project for his role in the cheating scandal?
Plus he is so middle of the road and seems almost afraid to make a damn statement.
During the Yanks challenge last inning on the pickoff at 1B, Kay asked them what they thought. Both Kay and Flaherty said they thought the play was too close to change and the call would stand. Beltran just rambled on with some meaningless words and never gave an opinion on if it would stand or be overturned.
The guy is a tough listen and honestly offers very little to the broadcast. He brings next to nothing and would not be missed if he wasn’t there.

He’s awful. Actually to point I won’t listen to YES anymore. Trying to understand if it’s just me or whether he is bringing something to the broadcast I am totally missing. He is even worse than captain obvious. Stanton just hit a HR and 3 mins after Kay describing it Beltran said “that is a big hit”. WTF?
I'm sure he's a very smart baseball person. I will take the word of all the players and MLB people who have said so. But he has no personality on the air, no charisma. There are some ex-players that are speaking English as their second language and they're good listens. Pedro Martinez is an example.
I wonder who thought of the brilliant idea of putting Beltran on live game TV with no training instead of easing him in on pre and post games shows. Worse is why is he with the Yankees at all? Is it some sort of rib from Randy Levine on Cashman? Every time Cashman whines about 2017 Levine tacks another year onto Beltran's TV contract?
I was listening to the Astros announcers the other night and they were laughing and making jokes about Beltran broadcasting Yankee games after the trash cans. It's absurd to everyone but the Yankees.
The way you all go on and on about him week after week. He's stiff and not great at this point. I do think the thick accent makes it tough at points. However Saturday I thought it was really interesting when Kay fed him the whole top/bottom of the baseball and how he worked on aiming at that spot depending on what type of pitcher he was going to be facing. I do think at this point he needs to be fed more by the play by play guy. We'll see maybe he never develops into a great color guy.
I agree that he just doesn't have much personality
Early on, there were a lot of people hammering both Beltran and Maybin. As Maybin has gotten more experience, though, he's loosened up and become more at ease on the mike. Beltran has not. He just doesn't say much of any interest unless he has Kay or Cone coaxing something out of him. He makes a lot of terse, obvious comments.
but Beltran reminds me of former MLB broadcaster Tim McCarver...
It's not just you. McCarver would occasionally remind his TV viewers that when a player gets three strikes, he's called out, and when he gets four pitches out of the strike zone, he's awarded first base.
you know the game well, that doesn't necessarily translate to being able to articulate the game well.
He shouldn't have been doing an Astros/Yanks series to begin with.
Lets face it, him and Cora were the kingpins of the cheating scandal there, cost Beltran a managerial job too.
there's no way Beltran was this shaky when he auditioned for this job. I have to believe that. And with that belief in mind would think the Yankees are now in a tough spot. It's hard to fire anyone let alone a former star like Beltran. There's always the public relations angle. Yankees aren't stupid. They aren't keeping Beltran in the booth just to piss people off and I highly doubt they employed him on blind or in this case deaf faith. He likely impressed early on so maybe the Yanks are quietly hoping Beltran gets his sea legs soon.
Cone was on the ESPN broadcast last night and was his usual awesome self. He wasn't perfect early on. Guys can grow into a role. Just wish Beltran was growing into a role somewhere else and we still had Cone in the booth every game.
Why is Hal trying to rehabilitate this bloated steroid cheater ??????
No proof of steroid thing, but I agree about him not being associated with the Yanks. And he is terrible as an announcer.
When I heard Michael Kay ask Beltran about Altuve because he knows him, I didn't want to hear him say shit. F Altuve, Beltran, and the rest of those A-holes.
They are so unlikeable.
Beltran stinks, he'll never be good. The eye sight comment re Torres
the other night was beyond stupid. Maybin has a chance, but the problem for any new color guy tho is that Kay stinks as a play by play man. He's all about Kay, not the broadcast, so he's no help to the newbies.
It’s that bad listening to him 😔

And let's not forget, he is broadcasting in his second language, which is always hard.

His knowledge of the game isn’t come across in the slightest bit. If anything, this experiment is doing him a massive disservice

That said, he's terrible.
Beltran has never been connected to steroids...that's a pretty serious allegation to throw around without anything to support it.

McCarver was a hall of fame broadcaster. He and Kiner were fantastic together
And whomever here said Beltran needs a play by play guy to draw him out is correct. A good pbp man really makes a good analyst shine
