NGT Deshaun Watson Article WSJ

Interesting that the Browns structured his salary so that his pay is low this year when he likely will miss games or the season.

Still a very bad trade when you take into account 3 #1 picks and the hit to the salary structure of the team.
Deshaun Watson - ( New Window )
But the entire salary is guaranteed

He gets paid even if he never plays again.

Crazy deal......the other owners must hate what the Browns did
George that isn’t accurate

If he is suspended he does not get paid. It’s an interesting wrinkle in this that if he is suspended for entire year this actually helps browns since his contract will essentially start next year verse an 8 game suspension which would trigger contract this year.
The dumb part is

not trying to trade Mayfield before signing Watson. They backed themselves into a corner. Nobody is going to pony up high draft choices or take on Mayfield's salary now when they know he will probably be released. If the Browns keep him on the team then they are wasting a roster spot and his cap hit, even though I don't know how much cap hit they take if he's released. If they think they are going to win anything with Brissett at QB they are kidding themselves.
I think

When all is said and done, this deal will be among the worst in NFL history on par with the Herschel Walker trade to the Vikings which led to the Cowboys dominance for 5 years

Ehh, I don't think they were anyway. And if you believe the reports, the Watson deal to Cleveland was dead in the water until they guaranteed the contract at the 11th hour. It sounds like they were in it, out of it, then back in it again.

The dumb part was thinking Watson's issues were going to magically go away. Not trading Mayfield for a mid round pick pales in comparison.

Totally agree. The sad thing for Browns fans is that the team itself is pretty solid. Good offensive line, best RB duo in the league with Chubb/Hunt, good defensive line, good secondary. Keeping those three #1’s would have made the most sense from a long term perspective.

They could have played Baker one more season in 2022 and drafted someone else next year if Baker couldn’t get it done.

The Browns created a problem for themselves but may have solved a problem for the rest of the owners. Kind of Kapernick like. The other owners now know that the fans know that the Browns management is disfunctional.

Watson only gets paid when he is eligible to play. That may not be for a while.

With this latest development with Watson, I can foresee the Browns working a trade with SF with some salary relief, if the Niners don't outright cut Garoppolo.

Yeah,

there were idjits on here who were willing to spend a big percentage of the team’s cap/salary stucture to bring him aboard.
WHo cares already

tHIS guy has been discussed over and over here. If a former Giants QB is getting the who cares treament why is there a thread every day about the Browns QB?

Because it’s an on going thing and Watson is a big name in the NFL.

And also because Mike Glennon sucks.
