Why did Mets move Hector Rodriguez to OF?
Vanzetti : 6/29/2022 12:36 pm : link
Physically, he would seem to be a natural 2B. Was he really that awful in the 22 games he started at 2B last season (at age 17)?

CF is a "promotion" from 2b. It's a tougher position to fill and it likely means they felt he looked athletic enough to give him a look out there. 2b is one of the "easiest" positions to fill on the field.

Not exactly sure what happened but Joel Diaz was scheduled to start (his name appears in the box score) but he apparently did not throw a single pitch. Christian Scott made the start and has gone 5 innings 4 hits 3 runs 3 walks 6 k's

Alex Ramirez is now 2-3 today and has now been on base 5 times over the last 2 days

Walker may be actually pitching the best right now

Let's hope he can hold up
Drew Smith gives up another HR
Snablats : 6/29/2022 3:56 pm : link
dump Shreve and put Smith in his place for non-important innings

Smith cant be used for important innings. 7 HR in 41 innings last season and now 5 HR in 32 innings this year. 12 HR in 73 innings is a big problem
Again
pjcas18 : 6/29/2022 4:01 pm : link
with any combination of both Scherzer and deGrom returning I'd focus on bullpen additions - the unquestioned priority - Mauricio, etc. get best available bullpen arm(s).

If neither can be relied on I would not sell any valuable pieces. Roll with what we havbe.

if only one can be relied on stuck in no man's land and I'd have a hard time being overly critical with any approach.
Do we think we will have a lead in the division by the Trading deadlin

It is very much starting to feel like last year.

I doubt the Mets are leading the division by the deadline. Braves are on fire. After tonight the lead is probably just 3 games. Harper having surgery out for like 4 - 6 weeks, so I don't think Philly goes on a run.

Difference with last year is there is hope deGrom and Scherzer will be added by the deadline so the Mets *should* be ascending post-deadline not dropping like last year.
why did we burn
Rory : 6/29/2022 4:32 pm : link
Diaz in the 8th or not carry him over into the 9th. ugh

probably because the heart of the order was due up in the 8th after the initial out by Walker (Altuve, Pena, Alvarez, Bregman), but he gets two outs (pitched to 4 batters - 14 pitches) and can't pitch a 2nd inning with an off-day tomorrow.

Two Astro players collided and had to be helped off the field. The significant delay in the game made Diaz unavailable for the 9th inning.
So for the second straight time, Buck brings out Diaz in the 8th
CooperDash : 6/29/2022 4:42 pm : link
and doesn’t allow him to start the 9th. And for the second straight time, the reliever after Diaz blew the save.

I understand why you want Diaz up against the heart of the order. But if you continue to lose games because of it, it’s a poor strategy. Let it go, Buck.

Come on, it’s not like it was a rain delay. The delay want that long and shouldn’t have prohibited Diaz from coming back out. Especially with Verlander blowing through this pathetic lineup.
Post all-star break is sort of a reverse situation from last year
moespree : 6/29/2022 4:44 pm : link
The Mets should be getting people back from injury and the Braves schedule is more difficult. This was pretty much the opposite a year ago.

The Mets and Braves still have to play each other 15 times, including 5 at home from Aug 4-7. Those 15 games will pretty much decide it.

Hopefully deGrom is back and Scherzer is fine for that 5 game home series in August.

Eh, not really. We were waiting for deGrom to come back same time last season which never happened. Here we are again.

And the Braves schedule absolutely does not get more difficult. Their July schedule is very easy. Outside of three games with the Mets and four with the Cards, they play all horrible teams. While we have Texas, Braves, Padres and Yankees. August the Mets/Braves play each other 10 times. But August is probably equally difficult for both teams. In September, the Braves play the Marlins, Phillies, and Nationals most of the month.

Our division will be decided in August and there’s a good chance we are multiple games out of first by then. Unless something starts to click with this team. But yeah, feels very familiar.
this year is this year and what happens from here is in their control
Eric on Li : 6/29/2022 5:40 pm : link
bringing diaz in against the heart of the order was fine. I'd have preferred to let walker keep going and have Diaz ready to come in but the strategy was sound and it worked. he put down the heart of a very good lineup with big strikeouts of alvarez and bregman.

a guy hitting under .100 hit a 2 out home run. the outcome is the outcome but you take that situation 100x/100. unless you think it would have been a better idea to let drew smith or a tiring walker face the heart of that order in 0-0 game.

for the last month or so the bottom 1/3 of the order has been hot garbage. they are still at the top of the league and division with the capability of filling in gaps, and right now that is the big one for all the talk of adding pitchers.

thinking they shouldn't press their current advantage misunderstands the decision they already made to sign Scherzer to the deal they did, and enter the season with Nimmo/JDG/Diaz/Bassitt impending free agencies. This is a win now team not a "the window opens next year" team. And before any panties twist that doesn't mean you do something stupid like trade Alvarez. there was a really good interview with tramuta today about the draft and the organization clearly understands the importance of developing a talent pipeline from ownership investments down.
Why 2022 MLB Draft approach is so important for Mets: A Q&A with New York’s scouting director - ( New Window )
They keep trying to establish Smith as the late inning guy
Vanzetti : 6/29/2022 7:29 pm : link
and he has failed miserably.

Keep him in middle relief, where he was doing splendidly.

Ottavino and Lugo are the late inning guys.
Hope they dont play the cheaters

ever again.
Just based on how things are right now
pjcas18 : 6/29/2022 7:33 pm : link
I'd call the Orioles on Jorge Lopez - wouldn't overpay since he has zero track record for his success this year, but he's having a good year.

And I'd check with the d-backs on Bumgarner.

He could bridge the gap between/if Scherzer and deGrom return, provide insurance against further injury to either as well as a hedge against Carrasco being done and Walker hitting a wall again.

Wouldn't overpay for him either though.

That's as much as I'm willing to do (or comparable) until I know more about deGrom and Scherzer. No Mahle, no Montas, no position players....
Josh Bell is still my first choice
ZGiants98 : 6/29/2022 7:35 pm : link
But Benintendi, Cruz, Mancini, Cooper, Peralta are all names I'd be looking at.
Scherzer is essentially back
ZGiants98 : 6/29/2022 7:38 pm : link
Tonight should be his last tune up.

Scherzer
Walker
Bassitt
Carrasco
Peterson
Williams

With deGrom on the cusp of rehab games.

Im just not interested in going after starting pitching yet. In a month, I might change my mind.
96-97
ZGiants98 : 6/29/2022 7:53 pm : link
From Scherzer tonight.
Alvarez
pjcas18 : 6/29/2022 7:57 pm : link
just hit his 18th HR, the OF never moves, what a bomb
link - ( New Window )
Alvarez is unreal
KDavies : 6/29/2022 7:59 pm : link
still only 20

Mauricio is 2-2 and has been picked off twice

Scherzer 3 scoreless so far. 2 hits, 5 Ks
they should be opportunistic for almost any player available
Eric on Li : 6/29/2022 8:06 pm : link
it's a credit to eppler i guess but they have a very flexible lineup to accommodate an acquisition pretty much anywhere other than 1b/ss. and a lefty firstbaseman wouldn't even be that bad.

Hosmer + an interesting pitcher for Dom wouldn't be such a bad deal either if SD is willing to pay the freight.
looks like Vientos hit a homer off old friend Corey Oswalt tonight
Eric on Li : 6/29/2022 8:08 pm : link
opposite field laser.

im excited Alvarez got a chance to catch scherzer too. he will probably learn more to get ready for his call up today than any other game the rest of the year.

Padres won't be trading with us
probably not but i would have said that a few months ago too
Eric on Li : 6/29/2022 8:21 pm : link
so who knows. Hosmer's #'s are almost identical to last year's so it's not like he's had any sort of performance surge.
also interesting vientos has also played his last 6 games at 1b
Eric on Li : 6/29/2022 8:43 pm : link
which seems sort of notable.
