NFT: Computer Tech Experts- Need advice

GMAN4LIFE : 6/29/2022 1:38 pm
Looking to buy a new pc for my home so i can use it to Work from home. The current PC i am using is a Dell Power Edge T30. The only reason i am using it is because that was the only desktop i had to use. Id rather not use the laptop provided by the company. When i use this for work, the CPU is taking a hit and zoom calls can be muffled.

the link below are a bunch of cheap desktops i am looking to buy. Which one would be best for just zoom calls, MS office, and just literally work off google spread sheets. (dont need graphics cards and all that jazz)
link to buy - ( New Window )

They let you behind their firewall with an unsecured PC?...

...That's pretty much unheard of, and an open invitation to be hacked.

no my home pc is all hooked up with all my companies trimmings and vpns as well.

Problem is its a server pc. Want something alittle better (also this server pc is gonna be retired once i find a new one as i built another pc for my server)
so you know how to build a server PC
Giantsfan79 : 6/29/2022 1:52 pm : link
but you are looking for a pre-built PC? Why not just build your own PC too, it doesn't sound like your needs require an expensive one either.
Why not just hook up monitors and keyboards to the laptop?

Is it really slow? I am in software development and I don't miss using a desktop at all. I have a Dell Dock, two monitors and a nice keyboard and mouse. Why does it matter if it is in a big box or a small one?
For the work you are describing .....

Just about anything should work. I'm curious as to why the computer you have now in insufficient . Is it ancient ? underpowered ? What are the specs ? You should ensure that the problems you are having are due to an old computer and that upgrading could help. If your problems are due to bad internet or some crapware thats hogging resources, a new computer might not help.
Why do you not want to use the laptop provided by the company?

Isn't that what it's for?

If it is merely for a better screen, just hook the laptop up to a monitor. Otherwise, I would recommend using the hardware they provide you to do their work.
PC or Laptop?

Personally, laptop all day as I like the mobility. And depending on monitor(s), usb4/thunderbolt 4(3?) could output to 2 monitors. Would just need the USB hub.

Get enough RAM 8GB+, sounds like processor isn't too much of a priority, get enough storage, wireless mouse/keyboard, comfy ergonomic chair, maybe a decent webcam...
Get a Dell Optiplex

Great move to buy from Microcenter. If it were me I’d snag a Dell Optiplex and nothing else. Optiplex is the corporate class and the ones you’re seeing at Microcenter are refurbs coming off corporate leases. I’ve bought many of these from Microcenter and usually with good results. Buyer beware, many of the computers you linked are older so they’re gonna have some hours on the CPUs and SSDs. Probably not an issue but if you buy the Microcenter extended warranty they’ll replace with similar (or better) specs w/o any hassle.

In terms of specs, I would get 512GB or better for SSD and at least 16GB of RAM and shoot for an i7 or better Intel processor. Zoom and Chrome browsers take more CPU than you might think so I wouldn’t skimp on the CPU. Get a good webcam.

Not sure what else b/c don’t know budget or detailed requirements. Good luck!
what is your budget?

if the company's paying and generous, you can meet your needs quite easily
thanks all... following your advice to use the laptop.
