after decades of having slipped deeply below the surface of consciousness. Yeah, Rocca was one of the good guys and a fave; I tuned in not because I was in love with wrestling of that brand but because to a young adolescent it was entertainment, a parade of silliness in good fun?
weren't shown on TV, you had to go see them live. Like Bruno. Saw a lot of Lewin and Curtis, the Kangaroos, Arnold Skaaland, Chief Jay Strongbow, and the occasional midget match back in the day. And refs who never saw the foreign object no matter how loud I yelled. I will say though, that back then most of those guys actually had some wrestling skills.
Dick the Bulldog ....Haus Modia....Rip the Profile Hawk
Both were 'Antoninos.' He retired shortly before I got into pro wrestling, but I remember him doing the color commentary with Vince McMahon on the old WWWF TV shows.
On one show, I can't recall exactly who was wrestling - I think the heel was Big Bobby Duncum, but I don't remember who the babyface was. Might have been Chief Jay Strongbow. Anyway, the Valiant Brothers came out with Lou Albano and began interfering in the match. Andre the Giant came out to help the good guy, but the numbers still favored the heels. Pandemonium ensued.
All of a sudden, at the bottom of the screen, Rocca stands up, tears off his jacket, shirt and tie, runs up and vaults over the top rope into the ring and begins cleaning house with kicks and dropkicks. It was awesome.
You can find some of his old matches on YouTube, along with many other old-timers from the 50's and 60's.
was usually Rocca's tag team partner. I watched TV wrestling from age 10 to 15.
The Graham Brothers (Jerry and Eddie) bled a lot.
I remember wrestling being on channel 5 on Tuesday night from Sunnyside Gardens, Thursday night from Washington, DC, and from New Haven, CT on Saturday night. They may have all been on tape (not sure). Ray Morgan was the announcer.
I used to only watch the interview portions as they hyped the matches coming up at Madison Square Garden and there would usually be arguments and tussles between the heels and the beefcakes.
Channel 9 had matches from the Boston Garden (Masked Marvels in white and black masks) and Channel 13 had matches from Chicago as I remember it also.
I went to one wrestling match in Norwalk, CT. Saw one Scuffling Hillbilly teamed with Cousin Alfred. Killer Kowalski defeated Tony Altimore (Later one half of the Sicilians with Lou Albano) who was from Stamford, CT.
Didn't known this but Arnold Skaaland who lost most of the time was a promoter himself.

I think you're correct sometimes memories get a little fuzzy. Especially for some that came of age in the late 60"s
