Finished watching last night. Remarkably good even though I was hoping for a different ending in regard to the characters. Can‘t wait for the - probably - final season.
With all of the praise over Season 4, I decided to finally start it. Plus, I'm a big Nightmare on Elm Street fan. With all the talk of how Season 4 has so many Nightmare on Elm Street vibes and with Robert Englund himself in this season, I had to check it out. But I might as well start with Season 1 and work my way to Season 4. There really aren't that many episodes in the first 3 seasons, so it shouldn't take long to get caught up. Liking it alot thus far.
It didn't ruin it, but it just rubs me the wrong way. Too many things not explained. People that were key figures and they leave no clue where they are.
I watched season 4 and enjoyed it. But it brought me back to the reason I had quit in the first place, it's like the same story being retold every season, with a couple of new twists thrown in. I guess I'll watch season 5, tho. Hopefully, the last.

100% agree. It is the same story over and over.
I almost shut it off during this season and the last 2 episodes of volume 1 really came on strong. So I hung in there. (I actually thought this was the show finale and they were done after the final episode.)
Then it became painful to watch. The pacing was so slow. They needed to cut a lot of the extra crap out of the final 2 episodes. All to set up another season.
I am done watching it.
It was cute when they were kids and it had an ET/80's feel. Now it is a complete mess. 11 is powerful, and now she is not and now she is again and now she is not, but wait she is powerful again. Oh, she can bring people back to life, oh wait she is not that powerful, wait she is powerful..
They had to make sure that 85 lb Nancy can wield a sawed off shot gun.
Somebody needs to teach Steve how to throw. Geezus Steve..
This show has become like having the runs, just when you think its over and you can move on, it hits you again.

You just...skipped a season?
No, I didn't just skip a season, I skipped it a year ago. Did I miss anything?

I'm confused by your post..
But yes if you skipped Season 3, you missed a lot...a whole season.
I can't imagine watching a show missing 5 mins of an episode let alone a whole season. Haha
it's not like there's much in Season 3 that you need to know to understand Season 4. I barely remembered what happened in Season 3 when I started this most recent one.
I feel like they sorta telegraphed how this is all going to resolve itself in Season 5. Not just the setup, but the final move that sets everything right.

I have no clue how you can watch season 4 and know what's going on or how any of it is connected if you skipped season 3.
i liked it alot but i wish the Duffer Brothers had the stones
to kill off a main character. It would have made more sense to do.
also, the purposed time jump of two years is gonna be weird for the story. How the hell will they live in those conditions for two years? kind of corny but we shall see.

And yet Mrs. in UT and I made it thru season 4 without a single "where the hell did that come from? We've gotta go back and watch season 3". My guess is that in season 3 the kids are confronted with a creature from another dimension, El is in a weakened state allowing the creature to wreak havoc, and El regains her full powers and saves the day. If I'm wrong on any of those counts, I'll go back and watch it. :)

You're wrong on 2 of the 3 counts. The creature from another dimension is the entire premise of the show so that's a given in all seasons. You're sort of off on #2 - it's more involved than that and you're wrong on #3 as since you watched Season 4, you know that El doesn't have her powers to start the season. Have fun watching Season 3!
or even some brand new plotline completely unrelated to the core of the show? The Duffer brothers took their inspiration from their love of 70's/80's movies, particularly Jaws, ET, Indiana Jones, etc. - most of these movies didn't have twists. They were summer block busters without big curveballs - they've done that in episodic form, with an underlying plot that's carried through as a constant for each season.
So its not about missing some pivotal piece from season 3 and some big 'ah ha' moment, its missing out on the growth of the characters, the town, and the overall lore.
Outside of SNL, I can't think of a single scripted show where I would feel comfortable missing an episode, let alone a season.
To each his own, but I just kind of don't understand sitting there and saying "ohh we watched Stranger Things season 1 and 2, 3 is available, but lets just skip it and watch Season 4"

What's the point for skipping it?
There was no intention to skip season 3. The point is that I was so put off by season 2 being essentially a replay of season 1, that I didn't intend to ever watch the show again. I only took a look at season 4 because the reviews here were so good, and, iirc, many didn't care much for season 3 .
Season 4 was bananas and awesome television. Season 3, while not as great, certainly contributed to the story. I do feel that they dialed up the 80s nostalgia factor to 1000 but it was still good.
To say that you didn’t miss a beat by skipping season 3 is just a person getting off on being a contrarian. I’m sure the whole Hopper/Russian subplot made complete sense to you given that you skipped season 3.
But hey, I can dumb down any movie/show that appeals to you too!
I'm sure a lot of people were effectively in the same situation as Bill in UT. Personally I only remembered the new main cast addition (Robin), the 2 deaths (or was it 1??) at the end of S3, the general mall aesthetic.
That's totally fine - a TV show shouldn't require an immediate rewatch/homework to be able to follow - especially if kids are a potential target audience.
Could be 18 months but yeah, its longer than normal. I think there's a ton of challenges when shooting, not to mention Netflix has been cancelling some shows for budget purposes so that can be a factor as well. Everyone isn't locked inside anymore so people that had 5 or 6 different streaming platforms are starting to cancel.

Kids are not the target audience for Stranger Things. Season 4 was even rated TV-MA.
it’s very clearly a show targeting older millennials, those that grew up in the 80s and early 90s. And the material has gotten darker as the show has progressed.

You don't think kids are a target audience for a show with main characters around 14 years old? Don't tell the kids choice awards.
As far as citing the TV-MA rating - lol cmon. I'm sure in your house Rated R is out of the question until kids are 17?
It is okay as an adult to watch stuff that can also be enjoyed by kids, don't need to pretend its strictly adult entertainment. Link - ( New Window )
but its definitely not exclusively a kids show, many comment as such. Ratings are messy but Nielson ratings from Season 2 had upwards 75% of viewers in the 18-49 age group. Not sure how that changed for Seasons 3 and now 4, but I suspect its relatively the same.
Gun to head I'm betting the 20-29 age group has the majority share of the above.
I always thought it was pretty obviously aimed at Gen X
Which is odd because the Duffer bros weren't 80s kids.
They were born in 84', and were into movies at a very early age. I think its safe to say that those late 70's/early 80's movies were a staple in their household.
They were tweener 80's/90's kids, same as me. Although early 90's pop culture resonated more for me.
Our kids (12 and 14) tried watching Stranger Things
But my daughter thought it was too dark and scary, and my son just wasn't interested. He pretty much watches only cartoons, war movies, and really goofy comedies.
RE: Our kids (12 and 14) tried watching Stranger Things

Yeah my 14 year old son and 17 to daughter tune in and out of it. My son watched a season or so and caught some of the latter ones when I'm watching. I think at first it was aimed more at teens, but I agree it's gotten darker and more mature the past few seasons and yeah they've really ramped up the 80's nostalgia as the seasons have gone on.
I liked it and it clearly sets up the final season. None of the other seasons clearly set up the next the way this one did...mostly because the conflict in this season was still unresolved or even a loss.
I was surprised they went that far with Max. It should be interesting to see where they go with that. Will she be a medium? A vegetable? Will El potentially risk losing her powers to bring Max back?
It is clear there will be something in the triangle of Nancy/Steve, Jonathan. I think we may see Jonathan as a vessel for Vecna, thinking he is helping Will by not exposing Will to Vecna, He would finally live up to the creepy vibe he's always had. I'm sure this would then result in his redemption in the form of sacrificing himself to save the others in the final episode or so.
I hope they don't go the other way and have Steve just bow out and sacrifice himself or worse, become the vessel for Vecna out of jealousy. If ever there was justification for the sappy ending with boy gets girl.
I kind of liked the way they left Papa. He didn't really redeem himself and she didn't let him off the hook. What about the Doctor, though (Reiser)? Is he alive? I think so and I think he will play a key role.
I read a lot here leading up to the second half of the season about El creating the Upside Down. I don't think that's really true as much as she just opened the gate to it. The second part of this season really did a good job explaining the time leading up to season 1.
I kind of liked the way they left Papa. He didn't really redeem himself and she didn't let him off the hook. What about the Doctor, though (Reiser)? Is he alive? I think so and I think he will play a key role.
I agree they resolved Papa well. El's last look at him was perfect. Not forgiving, but not contempt. Sort of neutral. I'm quite sure Doc is still alive. I have one steadfast television rule that's always true: if you didn't see them die, then they're not dead.
Personally I thought Episode 7 was better then 8 or 9 but I still really enjoyed both.
Having to wait a couple years now for the end is going to be rough!
Duffer brothers were pretty clear about next season being the last, so hopefully Netflix cant convince them to stretch it out more.
You just...skipped a season?

It's literally just one big story that they wrote out in full before Season 1...
It's not like GoT where they are just making it up as they go. This is carefully planned and all connected

Just remember, try before you deny, brochacho.
I thought that was obvious too. But I guess not everyone can peer through the fog created by the avalanche of 80's music and nostalgia...
I am very obviously not saying kids can't see stranger things. I am saying that kids are not the primary target audience.
