🔹Mets outfielder Travis Jankowski (recovery from left hand surgery) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment next week.
🔹Reliever Trevor May (stress reaction in right humerus) threw his first bullpen session yesterday. He's hoping to return around the last week of July.
solid enough on defense, streaky on offense, good in clubhouse.
maybe over time they figure out a good platoon deployment with him and Guillorme to play matchups where each can play up.
so back to where we began with just needing someone to win DH. Cano, JDD, and Dom have had their chances. Time for Vientos to get his so hopefully we can have 1 less player we need to trade for at the deadline.

Hasn’t Escobar always thrived as the super utility bench player though. I don’t think he’s ever been a full time starter before. Good teams always have that player, and that kind of player becomes the difference in playoff games.
But no reason not to bring up Vientos AND still add a formidable lefty bench/DH bat
no disagreement but that will sort of depend on what happens with JDD/Dom and how vientos plays. But hopefully the call comes tomorrow so we can get a solid 4 week look at Vientos before pulling the trigger.

In the last 4 years he's been pretty much an every day starter. 151 games, 158 games, 54 games in 2020, and 146 last year. and most of that time was spent at 3b even though he has the versatility to play all over.
he's a middle division starter with positional versatility - but 3b is a shallow position and he wasn't that expensive so a decent placeholder for a team with 3 left side IF prospects at AA or higher.
This Mets lineup is missing a true weapon in the 5th spot in the order that can play DH. Get an upgrade there and the lineup is scary again.
1.) Nimmo CF
2.) Matte RF
3.) Lindor SS
4.) Alonso 1B
5.) DH
6.) McNeil 2B
7.) Canha LF
8.) Escobar 3B
9.) McCann C
Three way tie for me between Haniger, Abreu, and Bell. Mancini would be my 4th choice.
I also think if Alvarez rakes in AAA, the Mets will want to add him before Sept 1, so he can be postseason eligible. Go with three catchers in September. Having Alvarez on the bench for the postseason would be exciting.
vientos has 39 hrs and 101 rbis in his last 512 abs over AA/AAA
Mets should and will be shopping for a DH over the next few weeks and nothing Vientos could show in the majors should change that.
He's ran out of runway.
The deadline is 4 weeks away. I don't think his presence stops a trade from happening if there's a player they like available at a reasonable price.
There's also no need to predict what may or may not be the situation in 4 weeks. Cano got about 5 weeks at the start of the season before getting DFA'd. Dom and JDD have gotten most of the at bats since even though neither appears to have much of a future here with both having been shopped. At this point there's just no conceivable reason to not give one of their top prospects a chance to step in. He's the same age as Conforto when they jumped him straight from AA and he'd only played 45 games there (with a solid but unspectacular .899 ops). Conforto contributed right away.
But even if he hits well enough, he should not be handed the DH spot for the postseason stretch and postseason, regardless. Not for a team with WS aspirations.
So my point is, call him up or not, he very likely is not our solution this year. If he is, the Mets botched the deadline big time.
RE: If you want to flip Dom for Vientos thats fine...

that's a pretty naive way to look at prospects since it's not uncommon that they come and make an impact right away - which we've seen as much as any team in baseball with Conforto, McNeil, and Alonso.
nobody is saying 'don't make a trade because of vientos'. fill every roster spot with the best players you can and give playing time to whoever earns it. no different than what they did with Conforto despite Cuddyer/Granderson having big salaries and Cespedes not being a true CF'er, they found ways to keep Conforto in the lineup because he earned it and if i recall he had some pretty big hits in the postseason.
Its actually a pretty naive way of thinking to think Vientos would come up and be our savior when the trading deadline is on the verge of heating up in about a week or so.
Vientos time is next year.
looks like the shoulder guesses on rocker were correct
Former Vanderbilt star Kumar Rocker underwent shoulder surgery in September, receiving what his agent called "a minor scope" on his right arm, sources familiar with the procedure told ESPN.
Rocker, the 10th overall pick in the 2021 draft, did not sign with the New York Mets after the team balked at the condition of his pitching arm. Now 22 and again draft-eligible, Rocker has steadily climbed teams' boards over the past month after regularly hitting 98 mph with his fastball in a dominant five-game stint with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the independent Frontier League.
"We have a very clear understanding, after a minor scope, of Kumar's medically documented health, which has allowed him to perform at the highest levels," said Scott Boras, Rocker's agent.
Earlier in the week, MLB clubs were provided with notes on the procedure, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, but there was not an MRI or any imaging included. Rocker is expected to again go in the first round in the July 17 draft. In a draft short on pitching, Rocker's combination of pedigree and the stuff he showed with Tri-City could compel teams to consider him far earlier than they were in recent months.
Seems notable that the article mentions they aren't sharing MRIs/imagining with teams. Seems very risky if he elects to not participate in the pre-draft mri program again.
Quote:
The Mets were initially elated he dropped to them and planned to offer a $6 million signing bonus -- $1.26 million more than the slot value of the 10th pick. Concerned by his medicals, New York never made an offer. The Mets received the 11th pick in this year's draft as compensation. Typically, teams need to offer 40% of slot value to collect the comp pick, but the Mets were exempted from doing so because Rocker did not participate in Major League Baseball's pre-draft MRI program.
The procedure was not considered major and did not involve Rocker's rotator cuff or labrum, Boras said. Rocker returned to the mound early in the year to build up to his June 5 debut with Tri-City, which is 23-20 this season. In his five outings, he threw 20 innings, struck out 32, walked four and posted a 1.35 ERA.

it has nothing to do with thinking he's a savior - there's no way to predict how he performs.
he deserves a chance over their other options right now and as with any talented player there's a chance he produces. there's no reason to bank on him or write him off. "that's why they play the games".

Did I say dont call him up? I flat out just said switch him out for Dom. Im fine with it. Just saying I dont see a place for him on this years roster assuming we upgrade DH, which we absolutely should.
But help me understand how Gsellman got cut and no one picked him up on waivers but, we have Joelly riodriguez and shreve pitcjing here with higher ERAs(?)
I always read about his low strikeout perc —I didn’t know that was such a vid deal.

The low ERA wasn’t sustainable if he wasn’t missing bats. Balls in play will eventually revert to the mean in terms of getting hits, errors. With a runner at 3rd and less than two outs a strikeout or weak pop out is what you want.
probably because AAA teams weren't giving him much to hit because they had him circled in every lineup card. in vegas of all places Alonso hit .260 and k'd 26% of the time. And he was a year older than Vientos at the time.
Over his entire ML career Vientos has been a .250+ hitter. Last year he hit .280. Since May 1 I think he's hitting .300. Tonight he's 2 for 5 with a 2b and plated Syracuse's first run.
his xbh/power numbers are as good as any prospect his age over the last 365 days, and competitive with alonso's when he was a minor league, but like alonso he's not and never been just an all or nothing power hitter. he draws walks and he has enough of hit tool you can hope he continues improving over time as learns how to approach major league pitchers, just as Alonso has steadily improved his pitch selection.
it's crazy how quickly we forget how big of an impact alonso had from day 1 even though he hit .260 and k'd 26% of the time. im not predicting vientos will equal alonso but it's somewhere in the range possible outcomes. and the good news is it's free to find out assuming uncle stevie paid for an unlimited plan.
it was a laser down the LF line with 2 out and 2 on and probably would have brought in 2 if it didn't hop the fence. not calling him up for Dom a few weeks ago was a mistake, but hopefully one that gets reversed tomorrow. they actually DH'd him today after a bunch of games in a row playing first so maybe giving him 1 last prep game to prepare for DHing here? https://twitter.com/SyracuseMets/status/1543735164928491520 - ( New Window )

Matt Reynolds just tied the game with a run-scoring single off Collin McHugh in the eighth.

. Wow
I know the hitters are only in low a ball but 8 swinging strikes one innng is still very impressive
Talk about a strict pitch count
1 HBP
6 batters faced, 5 Ks
Hopefully he comes out feeling good and we see 40 pitches on Friday or Saturday
Plus, 31% K rate. That is too much, IMHO.
