NFT: Your all-time favorite tv series/miniseries

Ira : 7/4/2022 2:23 pm
Mine goes back to the 1979 BBC series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy starring Alec Guinness and based on the novel by John le Carre. George Smiley, a retired spymaster (Alec Guinness) is recruited by the British gvt to find a Soviet mole in their intelligence hierarchy. Le Carre had worked for both MI5 and MI6, so his novels had a very realistic ring to them.

That's mine. Please tell me about yours.

a lot of good ones

I'll go in a different direction and say one miniseries I was disappointed with was "The Night Of". I'll go so far as to say that it might have the best series premiere of anything I've ever seen. A perfect 10/10 episode imo. But the rest of the show never again reached those heights and ended up being a forgettable 7/10 type show. But I'll never forget how I felt after watching that first episode.

GoT is another show that I'm dissapointed by. It should've been the #1 answer to this question for me, but like everyone else I hated the end of that show. If you had asked me what my favorite show ever was after the "Hardhome" episode, I would've said GoT with no hesitation. Sad that they ruined the ending so much that I didn't even think about rewatching the show while I was stuck at home during the height of Covid.

I also really really enjoyed "The Watchmen" TV series. The black and white episode "This Extraordinary Being" is one of the best single episodes of anything I've seen in the last 5 or so years. The whole season was great but that particular episode stands out so much to me, just amazing.

GoT is the perfect example of a show ruined by commercial success..but I suppose also compounded by the fact that they had to make up their own ending because the source material wasn't finished..

Dexter another example of a show that was absolutely terrific then went off the rails as they dragged it out season after season to attract viewers.

It's why a show like The Leftovers was such a masterpiece. It was laid out and done exactly as intended start to finish...
Easily Peyton Place, 1964-1969

the single season of Watchman is an all time great for me, hands down. That episode you mentioned was awesome - my favorite was the very next, the one in Viet Nam. It felt like Tarantino wrote it.

Its one of those show where I wish I can watch it again for the first time.

Yea, that one was great too. The whole story is simply done really well.

The show also made appreciate the career Regina King has had. She's been around for a long time and been in a lot of great stuff. I totally forgot she did voice acting for "The Boondocks" which is up there as one of my favorite animated comedic shows.

...I really enjoyed Zero Zero Zero, which, not coincidently, was based on a book by the same guy who wrote Gomorrah.

Zero Zero Zero was one of my favorite shows that I watched last year (i watched it late, it came out in 2020). Wish there was going to be another season because I'll always want more but its also perfect that there isn't, since it doesn't need one.

They’re very similar shows and both are excellent.

Thank you to the first person who mentioned Gomorrah, which I had completely forgotten about. I only saw the first 2 seasons on Sundance and after some searching I found that all 5 seasons are now on HBO MAX. Gomorrah is like The Sopranos, only if 98% of the characters don’t possess a single redeeming quality. Great show, tough watch.

My favorite dramas…

Deadwood, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Homicide, Rectify
The Leftovers

was a terrific miniseries. Giamatti is one of the great actors of his time and he nailed it as JA.

Did anyone catch The Missing miniseries from the 2014-2016? One was about a missing boy named Oliver and the next one was about a girl taken by a pedophile.

For TV, my list is:

Homeland
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Seinfeld
Sopranos
Entourage
The Office
The Larry Sanders Show
The Americans

'John Adams' was great. Giamatti & Linney were fantastic as John & Abigail Adams.
LOST

I know I'm on an island with that choice (pun intended) but I thought the ending was perfect. It had a slow start, and the writers definitely changed course after season two, but it ended up being a very rewarding series to watch and follow.
