Agreed. There are athletes in baseball but there are also non-athletes as well.
Is NASCAR a sport? Funny story. I remember being at a bar with my first cousin who works for the University of South Carolina in Columbia. NASCAR was on & I-being the wiseass that I am/couple deep-turned to her & said, 'This isn't a sport.' This dude two bar stools down heard my comment & said 'Fuck you! It is a sport!' He was also carrying so I didn't engage with him, Haha. Fun times.
I think they are athletes. Kind of like boxers who pick up the
training the closer they get to a fight. People assume that most competitive eaters are fat. Most of the good ones are not. Most seem to twke care of their bodies and go through training regimens. Like baseball, you can say there are those who are athletes and those who aren't.
But through my wife who is a nutritionist, I've had the pleasure of working out with a relatively high-profile YouTube "eater" (lol not sure what the right term is) and yes I'd say he/she's an athlete.

How does someone semi-regularly eat 60 hot dogs in 10 minutes and not have weight/cholesterol/hypertension/general health issues?
Everything I've ever read about Chestnut's training protocol suggests that, apart from competitive eating, he actually takes reasonably good care of himself. Exercises, does yoga, sees a doctor regularly, takes his recovery seriously. Also helps that he's still on the right side of middle-age.

He ran the fastest Derby ever as well as doing it in splits where he ran each succeeding 1/4 mile faster than the previous one. Just an amazing thing to fathom.
Another interesting fact: most thoroughbreds hearts weigh 7-9 lbs. When Secretariat passed and they did the horse equivalent of an autopsy, his heart weighed an astounding 22lbs!

Athlete - engaged in physical exercise. Eating large quantities of hot dogs is not physical exercise. Just as someone who is awesome at darts, snooker, Jeopardy etc are not athletes

Anyone who watches the event knows the over the top hyperbole by the announcers is the best part. "These are the finest conditioned athletes ever assembled" type of stuff. I watch it with my kids who are big sports fans every year. We absolutely love it.

I grew up in Baltimore, and as a kid in the early 70's the Colts used to have a Monday night radio show that was recorded live at some bar..."Braase, Donovan and Fans". I dont remember much about Braase, but Donovan was an absolute riot with the stories he used to tell. Drinking, Eating, Drinking, Eating.....and more and more and more:).
