Favorite all-time NON-GIANT Coordinators, O & D

Big Blue '56 : 7/5/2022 8:05 am
There’s a lull, so wth..

DISCLAIMER: I may “hate” them as a fan, but I’m going to judge them solely on performance only.

DC: Buddy Ryan..I’m omitting Belichick because his greatness was as a Giants DC though he coordinated for BP with the Jets, but feel free to list him.

OC: Norv Turner..In his prime, he made almost everything work, imo
Good picks IMO

As much as I dislike him too Buddy Ryan cam to mind first for me as well.

I'll go with Bill Walsh in Cincinnati as the best OC.

Great call!
Bill Walsh was the Bengals OC from 1968-1975
arniefez : 7/5/2022 9:22 am : link
HE was the OC for Chargers for one year in 1976. No NFL team would hire him as HC so he went to Stanford for a few years and then the 49ers hired him.
Bud Carson had some all time great

defenses with a couple teams. On the offensive side Joe Gibbs was a brilliant offensive mind and won different ways.

I remember seeing a show on Bill Walsh. Paul Brown was behind his inability to get a HC position.

Thanks. Didn’t realize he was OC gor that long. He certainly ranks up there as well..

Was Holmgren an OC or just a QB Coach (like Reid) before taking over Niners’ HC job
Niners HC job?

Dick LeBeau was a hell of a coordinator.
BillArnsparger DC for Dolphins

Under Don Shula.
Loved his defenses.

Looks like Holmgren went from being San Francisco's OC/QB coach to Green Bay.

Ah, so he wasn’t just a QB coach..
Always

Respected Jim Johnson. Dude could coach and did an amazing job no matter who is in the lineup.
Jim Johnson - Dick Lebeau

On the defensive side. Consistently great for many years. Buddy Ryan with the 85 Bears for one year.

Offense Walsh and Don Coryell.
Mike Holmgren...

was a brilliant play-caller. And he should be in Canton as a HC. So, he's my OC nomination.

For a DC, count me in with the Dick Lebeau camp. A mastermind.
Norv Turner
Les in TO : 7/5/2022 12:14 pm : link
Wade Phillips

Amazing coordinators not so good head coaches.
Dick Vermeil
gidiefor : Mod : 7/5/2022 1:16 pm : link
I thought Dick Vermeil did a heck of a job coaching at his last stint -- but he was the HC
As much as I loved Holmgren

I think Mike Shanahan was better, and his son inherited all of his genes.

The RG3 rookie season that revolutionized the mobile QB and college offenses we see in the league today.

The 2016 Matt Ryan MVP season.

The SF tenure with 2 NFC Championship appearances and a near SB win with what 90% of the NFL fanbase feels is not a good, let alone franchise QB.

That 1994 49er offense towards the end of that season was the closest thing to unstoppable as I could recall at the time. Was like a preview of the 2011 Saints offense, in an era where defenses could still be a factor.

The Shanahans can call plays, and create good schemes.

Can't 100% deliver without elite QB play and/or defensive lapses. I know people will want to bring up 28-3, and 20-10, but those would never have happened in 2006 NFL let alone 80s or 90s.

That to me is why Mike has 3 rings (1 as OC, 2 as HC) and Kyle is still (????) searching for his.

Only difference thus far is that.

DCs
NINEster : 7/5/2022 1:29 pm : link
In no particular order:

Wade Phillips
Vic Fangio

Underrated:
Pete Carroll
George Seifert
The Shanahans...

are definitely great at developing a running game. It's a true system as they have demonstrated that can generate production with almost any RB. And that success is why I am firmly in the camp that the RB position is the most fungible position in the NFL.

In terms of overall play calling, however, I think both are below the level of Holmgren. And that's because Holmgren has a PhD with the passing offense to compliment his running attack.

Shanny’s success with the RB game does not make that position “fungible” unless you have 32 Shannys
Wade Phillips

Always had a good defense.

Also was thinking of the Gilbride/Ryan fight on the sidelines...good times back in the day!

Defense: Jim Johnson with the Eagles is the first man who came to mind.

Offense: Norv Turner is up there. A dude who should get some love is Josh McDaniels.
Dick LeBeau
Joe Beckwith : 7/5/2022 11:26 pm : link
Tom Moore.
