The next few days things should start to heat up arounnd the NHL. Teams will be looking to get guys signed or shed salary in order to go after players in FA.
The Rangers need to make moves in order to keep some of their FA's or bring in new players.
The Islanders will look to move Bailey for sure and they have been linked to Forsberg and Gaudreau.
If you see or hear something let us know. Should be an interesting next 2 weeks.

The Islanders just couldn't create the cap space needed to sign Nazem Kadri, likely because of their RFA signings.

Completely agree. NHL is the only level he hasn't won.
I hope his career isn't over, but if it is, 1st ballot HOFer and the most positionally sound, calm, poised, elite, goalie of the past era. Not even sure who his peer is? Lundqvist? The Hasek/Roy/Brodeur era ended and not sure who leads the next one. I guess Carey and Henrik - maybe two of the best goalies to never win a cup (the dubious distinction no one wants).
I was watching one game, I forget which - maybe have been the 2014 Olympics, the talking head said "if Carey Price sees the puck he's going to save it. If he doesn't see it, he's still probably going to save it" - that is how fundamentally sound he is in net. In those Olympics, Price had a 0.6 GAA and a 97% save percentage (over 5 games). And maybe in a fitting display for the era Price outdueled Hank to lead Canada to gold over Sweden.

i buy this given what it cost CAL to dump 1 year of monahan. have to think 2 years of bailey would have cost even more if there was no salary coming back.
also have to think there wouldn't have been much of a return for beauvillier even though he has 2 very reasonable years on his deal. that would have been a toews trade all over again.
varlamov is probably movable but they dont seem to want to do that, and in the numbers game since they already have 12 Fs they would have had to move a F somehow. to fit Gaudreau i'd have been a lot more willing to dump others off than Kadri because I think in Gaudreau's case just by simple math you are getting 3 extra prime aged years for the same length deal.
2023 draft is "supposed to be" historic.
And with their D core and goalie even if the forwards do well MTL should be epically bad. With OTT and BUF improving it's MTL and ARI battling for worst team.
Yes.
Price's MVP season was sensational, one of the best goalie seasons ever. Lundqvist never had a season like that, but he was a machine. His durability and consistency led to a very long period of consistently excellent play. Price's career was more of a roller coaster, in no small part due to injuries. They played the same number of seasons but Hank played in about 150 more games. He was in the top five of the Vezina voting seven times, Price was three times.
In any given season there was a goalie or two having a bit better year than Lundqvist, but those guys rose and fell. Hank did it every year, year in and out, for over a decade.
Max Pacioretty? Brendan Gallagher? 35 year old Kovalev?
Other than Shea Weber name a good Habs defenseman in his career? PK Subban? Jeff Petry?
any way, it's an opinion question, so I won't argue with anyone who ranks those three goalies in any order, my opinion is my opinion.
34.1 - just this year. I believe they track it more structured now.

Pj…I’m surprised to see you so negative on your boys. I know you are rebuilding, but you still have some decent players, especially forwards.
Suzuki, Caufield, Anderson, Gallagher should be much better this coming year, Evans, Dach, Monohan when he is healthy, Dadanov, maybe Drouin if he can stay healthy, Hoffman is decent, Dvorak, unless he is traded…..and others. Maybe even your #1 draft choice, Slafkowsky comes up sometime this season.
You still have Edmundson, Matheson, Savard and a bevy of top prospects to play defense. (Barrón and Harris to name two.)
Your two goalies not named Price are pretty solid too. That Montembeault kid played better as the season wore on last year.
I don’t see your guys are being that bad. Your boys played especially inspired hockey when you changed coaches to MSL. You have to factor him in this too.
when your goalie has almost a 4.0 GAA it's hard to find nice things to say about them.
I like Jake Allen more than most people, but he's most valuable as a backup IMO. He gets exposed as a starter when he starts too often.
I don't even think I'm being negative. I'm fine with where the Habs are today. You don't replace a Price and Weber (plus) with the wave of a magic wand, I just hope they're patient because as bad as NY or BOS or TOR are, I'm not sure anywhere is as bad as MTL for impatience.
The only move I really question is trading Lehkonen. I like Barron in the return, but look what Lehkonen did post-trade playing PP1 and top 6 min. MTL never have him that opportunity and it took a trade to the SC winner for people to realize how good he could be.
I 100% support trading the veterans, but Lehky was an RFA even though he is 27. Some players take a little white to have the light go on and 5 years $22M like he got in COL is a steal IMO.

Can't go wrong with either - I forget how good Tukka Rask was sometimes. They went from Tim Thomas->Rask. So lucky (so are the Rangers).
I think Lundqvist's defenses were overrated for much of his career but Price had it much worse.
I think the stat only goes back about 15 years, and it's not exact, but I'd guess it's a pretty good indicator.
Thomas only had one other season remotely close to that season. and he didn't debut in the NHL until he was 28 and had his best season at 36.
Goalies are weird. no offense CHP.
People are debating Lundqvist vs. Price on Twitter and have been really heated, of course. I see both sides of the debate so it's hard for me to get riled up one way or the other.
I think both teams did a disservice to their goaltenders and should have been able to win Cups. However, I'd add that I think the value of an elite goaltender has declined vs. the early 90s as the average goaltender has gotten so good.

Keiffer Bellows - #NYI
$1.2M x 1 year
All base salary. He will be an arbitration-eligible RFA at the expiry of the contract.
they now have a full roster signed now with around 3-4m in cap room so they probably have something of a league-wide standing offer of their first plus a roster F (beauvillier or bailey) for a 7m+ impact rental winger like kane or jt miller or meier.

And the players probably don't hate it either.
If you're Dobson, for example, you get $12M guaranteed for the next 3 years, at that time your career earnings are around $17M. So sure, you're still an RFA when this contract is done but if managed wisely you're basically set for life financially, and then can decide if you want a bridge (if you don't want to commit to the team long-term) or long-term at that time - when you have more leverage which = more money.
Same with Romanov to a slightly lesser extent.
I think Bellows still needs to prove he's a NHLer who deserves a regular shift, but Dobson and Romanov are top 4 D.
the other thing that's positive about the romanov and dobson deals is that they expire at 25 years old. so if you decided to max out either of them with 8 years, those next deals will basically cover almost all prime years, likely at a rate under whatever their open market rate is (since they will be RFAs).
i hate lou's secrecy and it would be great to not always be the bridesmaid on top FA's but he knows how to manage a roster. for the love of god just find barzal a winger.

People sorta forget - the season before 2010/2011 Thomas was essentially replaced late in the season by a young Rask - Thomas appeared to be on the decline.
The B's then blew that series to the Flyers, but Rask was the unquestioned starter the next year in 2010/2011 but really struggled in the first quarter of the season and Thomas got back in there and never gave it back, playing outstanding.

Lundqvist was a HOF goaltender but Price was better IMO.
Yep, they had a 3-0 Game 7 lead, but gave up a late goal at the end of the 1st period to make it 3-1, and you just had a bad vibe about it...
But Rask wasn't blamed for the collapse - and went into the following season as the #1 but really struggled and Thomas just played lights out given the chance to be #1 again.
Thomas was essentially the #1 the two years prior and of course was the #1 the year following the Cup before he retired I believe.
Dach (MTL)
Oettinger (DAL)
Zadina (DET)
Brannstrom (OTT)
Formenton (OTT)
22 or so remaining.
Robertson the biggest name, but quite a few important players. DAL, OTT, DET all have space, MTL doesn't until/if they put Price on LTIR. Making Dach (and Cayden Primeau) ripe for offer sheet if a team still wants to go that way.

Great signing. I think the Rangers should have signed Stastny to a deal like that rather than giving Trocheck so much money and term.
Rangers are on the cusp of something great imo, maybe just missing one piece but I don't think PS is that piece.
I'd get that gun checked. NHL record is 108.8.
Shea Weber fastest time (as far as I know) is 108.5, Chara is 108.8 - and that is the NHL record. Iafrate was around 105
Not saying Kakko doesn't have a shot that hard, but I never thought of him like I do Weber, Chara, Iafrate, etc.
Trocheck is top 6 player.
Both were in play for NYR IMO.

My thinking is more that the Rangers have a 3-4 year window and should reserve some cap space to add a piece next year or the year after (or to try and extend Miller on a cheaper deal for a longer time period when his deal is up).
Trocheck and Stastny had the same P/60 last year. I think they are closer players than people think.
I would have put Chytil at 2C and Stastny at 3C and then traded for someone at the deadline if Chytil bombed.
Some times players need to be pushed.
I think pushing Miller proved to be valuable to his development.

not even kidding but he's a great case study for those that think excessive training leads to injuries. though he may be in a very small subset of pro athletes skilled enough to remain effective pro athletes with a dad bod.

very true and I bet he's one of those athletes that despite his appearance he's in incredible physical shape.
I was never more pissed to get out of a 6am dropoff when my daughter was scheduled to participate in the Amanda Kessel summer hockey camp in Worcester. I was looking forward to meeting her in person, lol. Total opposite in appearance to her brother.

Looking forward to getting to see him play regularly.
Yes, we all know the Isles need a game-changing scorer.
They do however have a great goalie tandem, a top-tier top 4 D and players who have some offensive skill.
Looking forward to seeing how much more open the offense is under Lambert, and how he juggles that with maintaining their shutdown D
