NFT: NHL Draft/ NHL trades and FA

Maryland Blows : 7/5/2022 11:25 am
The next few days things should start to heat up arounnd the NHL. Teams will be looking to get guys signed or shed salary in order to go after players in FA.

The Rangers need to make moves in order to keep some of their FA's or bring in new players.

The Islanders will look to move Bailey for sure and they have been linked to Forsberg and Gaudreau.

If you see or hear something let us know. Should be an interesting next 2 weeks.

Hughes was great. Maybe the best player on the ice.

I bet you see him after the Michigan season ends.

Yeah he has to be among the favorites for the Hobey Baker this year. I agree like Power well definitely see him in the NHL as soon as Michigan's season ends. I wonder how their season will be affected with the coach getting canned.
Cuylle looked good

He can move pretty good for a big kid and has a strong shot. He looks like he's physically ready for the show, at least.

NYR draft pick Jaroslav Chmelar puts Czechia on the board vs. Finland at WJC. 6-toot-4 winger will be PC freshman in a few weeks

When did we start calling it Czechia? Wasn't it always the Czech Republic? Did I miss the memo?

Still Czech Republic, but in 2016 they adopted Czechia is a shortened informal name.

I've been saying this since Hughes formally announced that he was going back for his sophomore season. As soon as their season ends he will sign his ELC. It's going to be very exciting to see him on the ice with his brother.

lol, thank you.
Sweden
pjcas18 : 8/12/2022 5:05 pm : link
beat Austria 6 - 0. USA and Sweden both 2 - 0.

It's nearly certain that USA vs Sweden on Sunday will be for 1st place in Group A and the way to avoid Canada until the Gold.

Sweden has tomorrow off, which is an advantage.

USA plays Austria tomorrow at 2pm ET.
USA plays Sweden Sunday at 10pm ET

Slovakia
pjcas18 : 8/12/2022 11:11 pm : link
actually wins a game, beats Latvia in a SO.

NYR draftee (2022 2nd round) Adam Sykora best player on the ice IMO.

Sykora's

USA all over Austria early
pjcas18 : 8/13/2022 2:16 pm : link
Kaiser from Corondao and Coronado from Cooley (and Knies).

2 - 0 USA 2 and a half min in.
Kaiser
pjcas18 : 8/13/2022 2:32 pm : link
from Savage and Duran.

3 - 0 USA, just over halfway through the 1st.
Cooley
pjcas18 : 8/13/2022 2:41 pm : link
looks great in this game so far.
Savage
pjcas18 : 8/13/2022 3:01 pm : link
from Moore and Duran to close the scoring. USA 4 - 0 after 1.
Carter Mazur
pjcas18 : 8/13/2022 3:25 pm : link
two quick goals to start the 2nd.

6 - 0 USA halfway through.

Canada are heavy favorites.

USA probably 2nd, but Sweden and Finland can beat anyone.

Czechs have some talent, but not much depth would need to be really good for them to make the finals.

dominated the 3rd, hit a bunch of posts, had a goal called back for offsides, and only scored 1 (off the goalies mask from a bad angle).

Tomorrow night will be much different.

they used to call Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, and Russia the big 5 because normally the winner came from them and any of them could win. And typically 3 of them would be in one group and 2 in the other. 1, 4, 6, 7 from the prior year in one group, 2, 3, 5, 8 in the other After 1,2,3,4 that's how I think it goes).

the Czech's some times can steal a game and once in a blue moon someone like Switzerland or Slovakia will beat one of the big 5, but it's rare they do more than steal an occasional game.
Canada
pjcas18 : 8/13/2022 5:00 pm : link
vs Czech Republic at 6pm.

Kent Johnson
pjcas18 : 8/13/2022 6:51 pm : link
with a "Michigan" (lacrosse style goal) in the final min to give Canada a 2-1 lead over the Czechs in an entertaining period.

Mason MacTavish remains on fire with his 5th or 6th goal of the tournament for the other Canada goal.
Latvia beats
pjcas18 : 8/14/2022 8:37 pm : link
the Czechs to move on to the medal round for the first time ever in history.

this is awesome.

sloppy play early, but Berard (NYR) scores on the PP to put the US up 1 - 0.

greasy goal for Berard.

either one good enough to do anything meaningful in the nhl in the next couple years?

I thought Raty was going to be a star heading in to his draft year, but seemed like his play stalled a little and he dropped in the draft he looks like a man on a mission in this tournament. Looks like a future star if he can maintain this level of play.

Dufour has some work to do IMO on his skating, but he has the size and the shot.

USA leads 1 - 0
pjcas18 : 8/14/2022 10:48 pm : link
after 1, good back and forth battle.

best game of the tournament - for any teams - IMO so far.

Sweden dominated for stretches, had some good chances - hit a crossbar, and USA had chances too. Only goal was a PP goal.
Coronado
pjcas18 : 8/14/2022 11:13 pm : link
a greasy goal of his own - assists from Knies and Cooley.

These are the kinds of goals they're going to have to get on Wallstedt, he's awesome.

USA up 2 - 0 almost halfway through the game

Still 2-0
pjcas18 : 8/14/2022 11:40 pm : link
USA after 2. I'll say again this is the best hockey of this tournament so far.

Canada vs Finland is tomorrow and that game should be good too.

but with no Russia, it's really a 4-team tournament (barring an upset)
Coronato
pjcas18 : 8/15/2022 12:08 am : link
again. this time from Cooley and Slaggert. this line has had some redemption - they haven't been great so far.

3 - 0 USA
Swedes get on the board
pjcas18 : 8/15/2022 12:19 am : link
with a kind of softie, Mbereko had it pop out of his glove.

3 - 1. under 10 left in the 3rd (plenty of time)
USA holds on, wins 3 - 2
pjcas18 : 8/15/2022 12:43 am : link
will play the Czech's in the QF (they clinch the 1 seed and CZE is the 4 in group B).

QF game is Wednesday.

Personal opinion only..
Andy in Halifax : 8/15/2022 8:06 am : link
but I think this is one of the worst USA junior teams in the past few years and they are still likely the team to beat. USA hockey is so damned good right now.

I also understand this is a funny tournament with likely more missing players than usual for top teams. But still, USA hockey is fire right now.

Absolutely. Many of the players who would have played in this tournament in December are not because it's so close to the opening of the NHL season.

Switzerland
pjcas18 : 8/15/2022 6:45 pm : link
beats Austria to claim the 4th and final spot from Group B.

Canada up on the Fins, 3 - 0.

Bedard all over the Fins. Othmann with the 1st goal for Canada.

Final games tonight to determine seeds.

USA already clinched top seed in group B, they play Czech Republic (4th in Group A)

This shot from Bedard
