NFT: NHL Draft/ NHL trades and FA

Maryland Blows : 7/5/2022 11:25 am
The next few days things should start to heat up arounnd the NHL. Teams will be looking to get guys signed or shed salary in order to go after players in FA.

The Rangers need to make moves in order to keep some of their FA's or bring in new players.

The Islanders will look to move Bailey for sure and they have been linked to Forsberg and Gaudreau.

If you see or hear something let us know. Should be an interesting next 2 weeks.

#Flames trade Sean Monahan and a conditional 2025 1st round pick to #Habs for future considerations.

still an impressive job though. They bought themselves 3 years that Kadri (and their team) shouldn't fall off much from where they were.

that price to dump salary is pretty insane for a single year that may more may not be partially offset by IR.
LOL, look at the conditions:
Anakim : 8/18/2022 5:58 pm : link
Here are the conditions associated with the first-round selection acquired by Montreal:

1. In the event Calgary's own 2024 first (1st) round choice is selection 20-32 (inclusive) (following the determination of the 2024 NHL Draft lottery results), then Montreal shall have the option, exercisable until 48 hours prior to the start of the 2024 NHL draft, to exchange the conditional 2025 or 2026 first round choice to become Calgary's own 2024 first (1st) round choice); or,

If Florida's 2025 First (1st) Round Choice Transfers to Calgary (pursuant to the conditions on an earlier trade)

2. In the event the conditions to trigger Montreal's option as noted in #1 above does not occur, or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail:

A) If both Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice and Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice (previously acquired by Calgary) are not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), then Montreal shall receive the earlier of the two (2) stated choices; or,
B) If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is a top-10 selection and Florida's 2025 first round selection (previously acquired by Calgary) is outside of the top-10 selections (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice).
If Florida's 2025 First Round Choice DOES NOT Transfer to Calgary (pursuant to the conditions on an earlier trade)

3. In the event the conditions to trigger Montreal's option as noted in #1 above does not occur, or Montreal declines to exercise this option, the following conditions shall prevail:

A. If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice, and additionally,

1) If Florida's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is not in the top-10 selections of the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results); and,
2) Florida's 2025 first (1st) round choice has been transferred to another NHL Club; and,
3) Florida's 2025 first round draft position is better than Calgary's 2025 first round draft position; then Calgary will transfer their own 2025 fourth round choice to Montreal.
B. If Calgary's own 2025 first (1st) round choice is a top-10 selection (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Montreal shall receive Calgary's 2025 first (1st) round choice, subject to the following condition below:

1) In the event Calgary's 2025 first (1st) round choice is the first (1st) selection overall in the 2025 NHL Draft (following the determination of the 2025 NHL Draft lottery results), Calgary will retain its own 2025 first (1st) round choice and Montreal shall instead receive Calgary's own 2025 third (3rd) round choice and a conditional 2026 first (1st) round choice. Montreal shall receive the better of Calgary's 2026 first (1st) round choice or Florida's 2026 first (1st) round choice (following the determination of the 2026 NHL Draft lottery results) (previously conditionally acquired by Calgary).
holy shit no wonder it took so long to announce the trade
pjcas18 : 8/18/2022 6:11 pm : link
they needed 100 lawyers to craft that language.

As I read it, as long as Calgary makes the playoffs in 2023-2024 and isn't a WC team then MTL gets Calgary's 2024 1st round pick (if they want it).

If they don't make the playoffs in 2023-2024 then a lot of things could happen.

Carey Price will go on the LTIR and probably won’t play next season. He told the media at the end of the season that it was possible that he played his last game. That’s why Sean Monahan’s contract fits under the @CanadiensMTL

At the deadline
pjcas18 : 8/18/2022 6:36 pm : link
a team like NYR or LVG should trade for Price's contract so they can exceed the cap by his contract ($10.5M) the next three years (plus the rest of this year) or until they close the LTIR loophole (which I doubt is before the CBA expires which is after Price's contract is up).

Once the bullets start flying on the ice, but on the face of it the Calgary front office did a master class job this off season. To recover from losing 2 players like Tkachuk and Gaudreau and as PJ pointed out actually potentially get better is completely unheard of. And they have those 3 key new additions locked up long term! So they don't have to worry about doing this dance again for long time. Hats off to them as a small market. Just about any other orginization would have been facing a complete tear down and rebuild in that spot. Will be must see tv when Gaudreau and Tkachuk make their returns to Calgary next season. Canadiens tend to be pretty hospitable but me thinks it might get a little ugly.

Completely agree. NHL is the only level he hasn't won.

I hope his career isn't over, but if it is, 1st ballot HOFer and the most positionally sound, calm, poised, elite, goalie of the past era. Not even sure who his peer is? Lundqvist? The Hasek/Roy/Brodeur era ended and not sure who leads the next one. I guess Carey and Henrik - maybe two of the best goalies to never win a cup (the dubious distinction no one wants).

I was watching one game, I forget which - maybe have been the 2014 Olympics, the talking head said "if Carey Price sees the puck he's going to save it. If he doesn't see it, he's still probably going to save it" - that is how fundamentally sound he is in net. In those Olympics, Price had a 0.6 GAA and a 97% save percentage (over 5 games). And maybe in a fitting display for the era Price outdueled Hank to lead Canada to gold over Sweden.

i buy this given what it cost CAL to dump 1 year of monahan. have to think 2 years of bailey would have cost even more if there was no salary coming back.

also have to think there wouldn't have been much of a return for beauvillier even though he has 2 very reasonable years on his deal. that would have been a toews trade all over again.

varlamov is probably movable but they dont seem to want to do that, and in the numbers game since they already have 12 Fs they would have had to move a F somehow. to fit Gaudreau i'd have been a lot more willing to dump others off than Kadri because I think in Gaudreau's case just by simple math you are getting 3 extra prime aged years for the same length deal.

should aggressively shop Dvorak, Josh Anderson, Jake Allen, Drouin, Hoffman, Dadanov, Byron, basically everyone over 25 - eat the salary (or most of it) and just get back picks and prospects.

2023 draft is "supposed to be" historic.

And with their D core and goalie even if the forwards do well MTL should be epically bad. With OTT and BUF improving it's MTL and ARI battling for worst team.

Yes.

Price's MVP season was sensational, one of the best goalie seasons ever. Lundqvist never had a season like that, but he was a machine. His durability and consistency led to a very long period of consistently excellent play. Price's career was more of a roller coaster, in no small part due to injuries. They played the same number of seasons but Hank played in about 150 more games. He was in the top five of the Vezina voting seven times, Price was three times.

In any given season there was a goalie or two having a bit better year than Lundqvist, but those guys rose and fell. Hank did it every year, year in and out, for over a decade.
Price had worse teams
pjcas18 : 8/19/2022 2:09 pm : link
than almost any of his contemporaries. Who are the best forwards Price had driving his teams offense?

Max Pacioretty? Brendan Gallagher? 35 year old Kovalev?

Other than Shea Weber name a good Habs defenseman in his career? PK Subban? Jeff Petry?

any way, it's an opinion question, so I won't argue with anyone who ranks those three goalies in any order, my opinion is my opinion.

Pj…I’m surprised to see you so negative on your boys. I know you are rebuilding, but you still have some decent players, especially forwards.

Suzuki, Caufield, Anderson, Gallagher should be much better this coming year, Evans, Dach, Monohan when he is healthy, Dadanov, maybe Drouin if he can stay healthy, Hoffman is decent, Dvorak, unless he is traded…..and others. Maybe even your #1 draft choice, Slafkowsky comes up sometime this season.

You still have Edmundson, Matheson, Savard and a bevy of top prospects to play defense. (Barrón and Harris to name two.)

Your two goalies not named Price are pretty solid too. That Montembeault kid played better as the season wore on last year.

I don’t see your guys are being that bad. Your boys played especially inspired hockey when you changed coaches to MSL. You have to factor him in this too.
Montreal forwards will be good
pjcas18 : 8/19/2022 2:36 pm : link
but they don't have a top pair on D and Montembeault got better because he couldn't get worse.

when your goalie has almost a 4.0 GAA it's hard to find nice things to say about them.

I like Jake Allen more than most people, but he's most valuable as a backup IMO. He gets exposed as a starter when he starts too often.

I don't even think I'm being negative. I'm fine with where the Habs are today. You don't replace a Price and Weber (plus) with the wave of a magic wand, I just hope they're patient because as bad as NY or BOS or TOR are, I'm not sure anywhere is as bad as MTL for impatience.

The only move I really question is trading Lehkonen. I like Barron in the return, but look what Lehkonen did post-trade playing PP1 and top 6 min. MTL never have him that opportunity and it took a trade to the SC winner for people to realize how good he could be.

I 100% support trading the veterans, but Lehky was an RFA even though he is 27. Some players take a little white to have the light go on and 5 years $22M like he got in COL is a steal IMO.

Can't go wrong with either - I forget how good Tukka Rask was sometimes. They went from Tim Thomas->Rask. So lucky (so are the Rangers).

I think Lundqvist's defenses were overrated for much of his career but Price had it much worse.

to this day Tim Thomas has the best recorded season of goals saved above expected with ~40 in 2010-2011.

I think the stat only goes back about 15 years, and it's not exact, but I'd guess it's a pretty good indicator.

Thomas only had one other season remotely close to that season. and he didn't debut in the NHL until he was 28 and had his best season at 36.

they could have gone longer but probably saved themselves 3-4m per year in cushion to keep adding. and since they have rfa rights at the end they will have leverage for extensions then. if they play well enough the price goes up that's a good problem.

they now have a full roster signed now with around 3-4m in cap room so they probably have something of a league-wide standing offer of their first plus a roster F (beauvillier or bailey) for a 7m+ impact rental winger like kane or jt miller or meier.

And the players probably don't hate it either.

If you're Dobson, for example, you get $12M guaranteed for the next 3 years, at that time your career earnings are around $17M. So sure, you're still an RFA when this contract is done but if managed wisely you're basically set for life financially, and then can decide if you want a bridge (if you don't want to commit to the team long-term) or long-term at that time - when you have more leverage which = more money.

Same with Romanov to a slightly lesser extent.

I think Bellows still needs to prove he's a NHLer who deserves a regular shift, but Dobson and Romanov are top 4 D.

totally agree
Eric on Li : 8/22/2022 3:44 pm : link
bellows is an extra forward fighting for his spot.

the other thing that's positive about the romanov and dobson deals is that they expire at 25 years old. so if you decided to max out either of them with 8 years, those next deals will basically cover almost all prime years, likely at a rate under whatever their open market rate is (since they will be RFAs).

i hate lou's secrecy and it would be great to not always be the bridesmaid on top FA's but he knows how to manage a roster. for the love of god just find barzal a winger.

People sorta forget - the season before 2010/2011 Thomas was essentially replaced late in the season by a young Rask - Thomas appeared to be on the decline.

The B's then blew that series to the Flyers, but Rask was the unquestioned starter the next year in 2010/2011 but really struggled in the first quarter of the season and Thomas got back in there and never gave it back, playing outstanding.

Yep, they had a 3-0 Game 7 lead, but gave up a late goal at the end of the 1st period to make it 3-1, and you just had a bad vibe about it...

But Rask wasn't blamed for the collapse - and went into the following season as the #1 but really struggled and Thomas just played lights out given the chance to be #1 again.

Thomas was essentially the #1 the two years prior and of course was the #1 the year following the Cup before he retired I believe.

Great signing. I think the Rangers should have signed Stastny to a deal like that rather than giving Trocheck so much money and term.

I'd get that gun checked. NHL record is 108.8.

Shea Weber fastest time (as far as I know) is 108.5, Chara is 108.8 - and that is the NHL record. Iafrate was around 105

Not saying Kakko doesn't have a shot that hard, but I never thought of him like I do Weber, Chara, Iafrate, etc.

Different roles
pjcas18 : 8/23/2022 12:55 pm : link
Stastny is a bottom 6 player who gives you a veteran presence, money on the dots, late game guy who can play PP2 or PK2 and be defensively responsible.

Trocheck is top 6 player.

Both were in play for NYR IMO.

My thinking is more that the Rangers have a 3-4 year window and should reserve some cap space to add a piece next year or the year after (or to try and extend Miller on a cheaper deal for a longer time period when his deal is up).

Trocheck and Stastny had the same P/60 last year. I think they are closer players than people think.

I would have put Chytil at 2C and Stastny at 3C and then traded for someone at the deadline if Chytil bombed.
