The Giants Huddle podcast had the QB room on to discuss the new Daboll/Kafka offense.
Here is a stand out quote from Webb:
"I think every year, it's evolved," Webb said about the offense. "It's always adapting, it's never the same. You're not going to see plays from 1980. You're going to see plays from this decade, and it'll continue to evolve. There's always going to be a new play each and every week. You're going to see someone across college football or high school or middle school, and if Dabes and Kafka like it, they might throw it in next week. It's always looking to improve, looking to adapt and adjust." |
I don't know if I'd go so far as to suggest the Giants PR team planted a line like that for the hardcore fan base, but it sure hits close to home.
Webb certainly comes across as more of a coach than a player in this interview.
Jones is also on, but says the normal Eli-isms.

heh~
I recall reading somewhere that there's hardly any such thing as a "broken field" anymore, partly because of modern defensive schemes, so the great broken-field runners of yore would have a harder time against today's defenses. That makes sense to me. I've also heard a radio interview with Trent Dilfer where he talked about why "smashmouth football" doesn't really work anymore: Defenders are so strong and fast that offenses have to create an instant of hesitation before they attack a play. The old idea that it doesn't matter if the D knows what's coming because they can't stop it isn't true in the modern NFL. That makes sense to me, too. But I'd love to learn more about how play design has changed from then to now.
Aside from the fact that in 1980, it was a run-first game.
Are you serious? Garrett literally had 3 players running into each other 5 yds down field as a play. Now it didnt matter because Solder got beat in less than a second, but not a single player can function in dumb ass plays like that.

Some posters here really need to go back and look at the plays Garrett ran. A hall of fame team from NFL history could not win with that horse shit.

I don’t think some realize how badly this team was coached last season
Yeah, Ben in Tampa must be thinking of starting Webb
Will Shepard have a healthy year finally? Will Galloday be any good in this system as well as healthy? Will Robinson develop quickly and be hard to cover on underneath stuff where he can race by the safety coming up? Will Toney develop and stay on the field as well? How about Bellinger over the middle on those easy grabs where he finds the hole in the defense? Finally, what about explosive Barkley and his abilities to take it to the house but he needs an OL and to stay healthy himself.
And how many times did I say "stay healthy??"
Also 80s play would work suprisingly well I would think. The differnece now is plays like bubble screens and short passing game works wonders because they are nearly inpossible to defend with the new rules. It's just a copy cat league that is all. Ironically, the person who perfected the spread offense which everyone is copying will still bust a 1970s Rose Bowl play i.e. coach Reid in the red zone.
Otherwise this has been goin on for awhile. Wasn't it Coach Parcells luughing at coach Walsh for using the wishbone formation a lot in a scab game from the 80s?
It's just age before beauty.
