NFT: I'm pissed that there's no World Cup this summer.

We'd be nearing or in the quarterfinals right now. And I get why it is being played in November & December because it is like 175 degrees in the shade in the Quatar summer months.

I'm no huge soccer nut-you won't find me in a bar at 7 AM on the weekends watching the Premier league-but I enjoy watching soccer & especially the World Cup. It is a cool event & a lot of people-casual fans if you will-get sucked into it. And I know a lot of bars that will get huge TVs so patrons can watch it outside with the nice weather & drinks flowing...you can't ask for a better time.

& this year, it'll be going up against the NFL, college football, early season NBA/men's college hoops, & the holidays...it just seems like a recipe for disaster ratings & general enthusiasm wide, at least here in the States.

Fucking FIFA. Corrupt as all hell.

Just had the pleasure of watching the USMNY U-20s win the Concacaf U-20 tournament, though, and they looked really good doing it. Brandon Aaronson's younger brother Paxten is on the team and he and others (Quinn Sullivan, along with Paxten on the Phila. Union of MLS) are very good. In winning this they qualified the USA for the next Olympics as well as the U-20 World Cup. What was most impressive is how professionally they play. Things are really in the pipeline for the USA. Around July 30 soccer will start up again in Europe and my favorite thing is to follow the USA players over there - not only more than ever, but you're talking major roles on major clubs.

to see those U-20 games, but they were on. Sometimes in Spanish but I don't care about that - just wanted to see the games.

fri post thanksgiving v england

it doesn't cross with football at all

I expect weekday day games to be on TVs in the "cafe" at my office.

but yeah the summer is way better. Just less sports on in the summer. I mean the games being during the day wont compete with much winter sports, but still.

Really dumb PC decision to go to a place where its too hot to play.

Everyone understands that sporting events are played at certain designated times of year. If your venue is not suitable, you don't get the event. It's like that in every sport.

Yeah but the schedule is also compressed, meaning more games in a day. The Group stages, even if it moves at a slow pace, is awesome that it takes some time. You get to know all the teams, big and small, etc. I am afraid this year with the compressed schedule it will kind of be like pick the games you want to watch.

I love soccer, but I'll be a little ambivalent.

FIFA is corrupt, Qatar is an embarrassment, and November doesn't feel right. Still, I'll watch every U.S. game and plenty of others, hoping that we survive the group. That would be huge, given our lack of experience.

Our U20s look like our most talented group ever, so it'll be fun to see us in 2026. The current squad should be peaking in 4 years, and the younger guys will help.
