Gano and Douglis

Giants73 : 8/2/2022 12:04 pm
Both appear to be having the worse camps in these daily updates. Either Gano is the worst tackle on the planet or ximines, roche and smith are the the next coming of LT.

Never recall seeing either of them play, but a few months ago this Gano guy was hyped up all over this board.

of all, it's Gono.

Second of all, he was never "hyped" by anyone on the board. Some, including me, simply pointed out that at one time the Falcons considered him a rising player.

Yep, looks scary.....Peart and Gates are needed back healthy

Thank goodness they drafted the NC guys
You expect the kicker to play

well on the offensive line?
Let's give

Gono a preseason game or two before anointing him as camp fodder. Douglas very well might not make the roster but we are far from cut downs so why don't we take a deep breath and let this all play out through August.
And who on BBI thought the Giants O-Line mess
M.S. : 8/2/2022 12:12 pm : link

would be fixed in just one year?

Raise your hand.
Complaining about OL backups is a bit much
BillT : 8/2/2022 12:16 pm : link
They had to fill four starting OL positions. Seems they may have done ok there. Anything more is gravy.
No matter how you spell their names, both players seem to be falling
Ivan15 : 8/2/2022 12:16 pm : link
To the bottom of the depth chart. The Giants may have 2 or 3 better candidates for backup center-guard than Douglas and I don’t think Gono has a prayer of being the swing tackle unless he has an epiphany. He may have a better chance of sticking as a backup guard.

The Giants will find one or two backup centers. I don’t see a swing tackle. Maybe the 2 rookie guards will also be the backup LT and RT.

First sign that Schoen may not yet be a great judge of talent.

Schoen had to fill four starting OL positions and at least four more backup OL positions and you’re questioning his talent acquisition over guys like Gono and Douglas. WTF!

That would make too much sense.

very much so. to the point that I'm reading the non-football threads more than the football threads.

Remember that Douglas and Gono were signed as free agents pretty early. I’m not criticizing the signings. Just saying Schoen is going to learn on the job as he goes along.
When do they retire?
Pepe LePugh : 8/2/2022 1:16 pm : link
These signings always reminded me of Looney/Fulton signings. Not a bad move, but let’s see how it plays out. Only problem is that they come with cap hits, even if they don’t make the team.

What is there to learn, not to address the team's most glaring weakness as quickly as he can, with the limited resources on hand?

Seriously?
HMunster : 8/2/2022 1:35 pm : link
The guy was signed to a cheap 1-year deal to play backup / swing tackle and Schoen's a poor judge of talent after training camp practice?

Drafted Neal? Never mind that. What about signing Glowinski? Yesterday's news. Feliciano? He's just a Center. Ezeudu? No clue how to pronounce his name.

So, let's focus on Gono.

The reality is that Gono is a young T with upside who can also play G in a pinch. He's not great, but he also was never expected to be.
Gono missed all of last year
Rudy5757 : 8/2/2022 1:43 pm : link
so he is probably quite rusty. He is a backup so lets not really worry too much. Last year we had a guy worse than Gono starting so theres that. Douglas may not even make the team. Its only a few days into camp and the OL really only had 1 practice with pads, hard for OL to practice without pads. Much easier for DL and edge to practice without pads.

Give it time, things will sort itself out. This coaching staff has no ties to players so they will keep the best of the bunch. Besides Glowinski and the draft picks they are all on vet minimum deals so easy to cut and replace with another backend roster guy.
Yeah bit of an odd thread
Johnny5 : 8/2/2022 3:27 pm : link
As someone mentioned Gono was hurt last year, so likely getting his legs back under him. He certainly looks the part, not that that means anything. Douglas was signed as depth and camp body, he is a journeyman player and while I certainly agree he looks the worst of the bunch it won't exactly be a bad thing if he is driven off of the roster by better talent we have also acquired. You certainly need bodies in camp. Not sure how that translates to Schoen needing to up his game on eval. The NC guys are looking pretty good. Glowinski and Feliciano were good signings.
Based on their scant financial guarantees...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/2/2022 3:31 pm : link
...Gono and Douglas were signed to compete for the final backup slots on the OL. If they don't make the 53, the guarantees can be covered by practice squad salaries, here or elsewhere. I'm not losing sleep over a combined $252.5K in bonus payments, or the availability of better backups if these guys can't fill those roles.

Gono and Douglas played a combined total of two offensive snaps last year. They are a step up from camp bodies - a fairly small step. Douglas might be a decent backup guard, but he may need to do better at center to make the team. Gono is more of a lottery ticket, with some upside. If he isn't at least a quality backup at RT, however, he has no chance.

The Giants might keep as few as eight OL on cutdown day, plus Gates and possibly Peart on PUP. They can backfill from the waiver wire and the street if the current backups aren't worth keeping. Those late additions won't be good, but they won't be worse.

Yep, that's fair.

Though I warned folks a bit not to put that much weight on that because the Falcons haven't been strong evaluators of talent over recent years (approaching Gettleman levels) and that same team had zero qualms releasing Gono this past offseason too.

In the end, Gono is a guy in camp that we hope doesn't make the roster because we have better alternatives. And that's probably what is playing out this summer with these daily reports on him...
And here I was, looking at this thread,
Angel Eyes : 8/2/2022 4:28 pm : link
thinking we'd need a new kicker and smacking my head because that's the one place I didn't think we'd need help.

I miss the good old days of pre-internet when I still thought the majority of humans were somewhat intelligent. Those days are long gone.....sometimes the levels of dumbness amazes me. As you said...this comment after ONE practice in pads.
That level of intelligence in the 'old days' would probably

amaze me.
