Going back through my notes from camp, I wrote down Giants rookie DT Chris Hinton's name a few times as far as someone who was standing out.
Including in that: two good reps in 1-on-1s when the pads went on Monday. He's a player who could be positioned well in preseason games.

That's real good to hear because -- after Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence -- do the Giants have ANY D-linemen that could be classified as at least "average"?
The NFL is a passing league and blah, blah, blah, but never saw a team win jack that couldn't stop the run.

They invested a 5th Round pick in D.J. Davidson, who's best described as an early-down run-stuffer, backup NT. He's not a finished product, but I figure they see him developing into a capable role player. Not spectacular, but solid.
I wonder if we'll see more running plays? I still have a sneaking suspicion that the Giants will run a bit more than we figure, passing league notwithstanding. They just seem built to do it well.
This makes me think of an article on the Packers about 5 years ago that suggested they shift to a 4-3, with nickel personnel: three linemen on the field, two rushbackers, and a safety/linebacker hybrid instead of a nickel corner. What if the Packers switched to a 4-3 defense full-time? - ( New Window )
Obvious caveat is that the starting center has been out, the backups are dubious, and the guards are nothing special either. Still, with Ellis a one-year stopgap, it would be a huge win if Davidson and Hinton could fill the interior by 2023.

The personnel grouping in the front 7 (or 6) isn't, IMO, the "why" teams can be stout vs. the run. I prefer an odd front but an OLB is going to bump it to and even 50% of the time anyway.
Athletes win at every level of the game. Get your athletes and playmakers on the field.
A S/LB hybrid (NickelBacker) is absolutely my choice in a nickel base.

Just hope Daboll and Kafka can be a bit more creative with the runs. I like a power running style as much as anyone (I wanted the Giants to draft Hassan Haskins this year) but that doesn't work with Saquon. Didn't see a lot of off-tackle runs with Garrett as the OC.

What does it say when a 30-year old professional athlete needs five days (4 practice + Sunday) to recover from heat exhaustion? Is it just poor conditioning, some other physical condition? In my mind, not much positive.
I think at this point, it's probably safe to assume it wasn't just heat-related. As you know, what's released for public consumption does not align with reality.
It will be interesting to see if they want JF as the starting C, or if they prefer to use Lemieux there with Ezeudu at G. If there's anything Feliciano has demonstrated, he's a bit unreliable. And his lack of athleticism hurts their ability to run outside zone - which is Barkley's best play. Perhaps he's best served as the primary interior backup.
