I love towards the end that he doesn't exactly seem settled in as a backup. I've said it many times now, but I think he should be competing for the job. His track record is good, he is the only QB under contract next year (at a very cheap rate). Again, my opinion, he is an above average QB, while Jones is average to below average to date. IF he is better throughout camp, I think he should start. IF they are even, Jones is the incumbent and should remain as such to start the season.
I think if it was an open competition at QB, TT would win. But it isn't so...
Based on what? Has Taylor been lighting it up in practice all these years only to not win the starting jobs for unknown reasons?
I liked the Taylor signing but I have a hard time believing he’s a cut above Jones in camp. And he’d need to be definitively better to get the starting nod.
Because I think TT has shown me more as an NFL starting QB than Jones has. And I don't think Taylor is anything to write home about either. I just think-gun to head-he'd give us a better chance of winning.

Based on a better track record as a starter in this league. Believe me, I recognize he hasn't set the NFL on fire. That's why he was available cheap. But, he also has an above .500 record as a starter for mostly bad teams. He has avoided a lot of turnovers and efficiently runs an offense. Is he great? Nope. But, I think he is better than Jones.
do you think Dabolll cares what Jones looked like last year? What if taylor stinks now (he’s 33)? You are suggesting that Taylor can’t win the job and I think that’s ridiculous. If taylor is clear cut better than Jones in camp than Daboll is going to go with him. Nothing worse than starting your first HC gig off with failure - why would he choose the inferior option? It’s a conspiracy theory that he’d do that.
Good lord...of course Daboll and Schoen care how Jones looked
Schoen & presumably Daboll studied enough of Jones' film not to exercise 5th year option.
Yes, and that has no bearing on who wins in camp. Thought it was obvious I was talking about camp since, you know, that’s what this thread is about. The decision to pick up the 5th came before camp, which I’m sure you are all well aware of.
If Taylor is the better QB he’s going to play and the Jones days are over. I don’t see any reason why Daboll wouldn’t do this other than a conspiracy theory about succumbing to Darth Maras wishes.
Well, I don't think it is on par with the JFK assassination, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mara-based on his constant yapping-let it be known he wants to see what DJ can do this fall, thus applying pressure on Schoen & Daboll to roll with him.
Schoen did. Of course they are aligned to an extent on roster decisions but Dabolls job is to put his team in the best position to win on Sundays. How Taylor and Jones performed in the past is irrelevant to what they are doing in camp. Taylor’s last solid season was 2017, that’s relevant?
I think TT gives us a better shot @ winning than DJ does. That's my opinion. I could be wrong.
& I think Daboll definitely had a say in whether we picked up Jones' 5th year option. Yes, it was ultimately Schoen's call, but the thought of Daboll having no say strikes me as unrealistic.
Nice try at a pivot, but how both guys have performed in the past

I never said he had no say, I said that he didn’t decline his option, Schoen did and also said while they are likely aligned on roster decisions Dabolls job is to field the best team he can on Sundays.
This isn’t that complex. It’s fine if you think Taylor might be better but that’s a dart throw based on his performance from 5 years ago. It’s unlikely he’s better than Jones, IMO. Taylor playing for the 2018-21 Giants likely doesn’t do well and gets injured more than Jones.
Big picture I don’t really care what happens, I just don’t know where this “fair camp” comes from. I don’t believe Daboll will give the worse QB the starting job. To me that’s preposterous.
and then in your next breath say past performance for either guy doesn't matter. That's BS. Both have track records as a starter. Taylor's is better. It's hard for fans to say anything about this camp so far. Reading all the write-ups, it seems Taylor has been a little more accurate and decisive. We'll have to wait for the pre-season games.
Since then Taylor is under .500 and hurt a lot. I happen to like him, I just don’t buy this theory that he’s the better option, it’s based on nothing relevant.
team. I've always admired him from afar. He's a real class act. And he seems to be the perfect backup this year and bridge to the next QB if Jones doesn't play well enough to get it. Really smart addition to the team from Schoen and Daboll. Smart, tough and dependable is what the backup QB is now.
The job is Jones' and I don't think Daboll pulls him for performance
reasons, however bad he is. This is a new system and a priority this year (besides winning) is finding out whether they need to cut bait with him. The evaluation has to take place over the whole year, I would think.
However, I think the odds are good that Taylor plays, given Jones' injury history, and he's certainly a lot better than the backups we had last year. Schoen realizes how important the backup QB position is, regardless of the predictions for how good the team will be. That's already an improvement over the last regime.
I’m glad he’s here, outside of that one poster on here I’m pretty sure we are all happy to see Taylor as the backup over Glennon.
Should Taylor answer that question for Daboll? “Yes, coach thinks I’m great.”

Do you think they declined that 5th year option as a goof?

Regardless, even if Taylor looks better than Jones, it will take Jones looking very suspect to lose the starting gig...

If he beats Jones in camp, they might as well cut Jones and go with Davis Webb.

He's not a "savior", but hopefully he can make the team respectful. What he is is a transition to somebody else (maybe in the next draft, or two).
