Outlaw Josey Wales was a better movie IMO. Slightly different and Unforgiven is darker.
Great comparison. Wayyyy darker. Eastwood's history as a good drifter in those spaghetti western precedents makes the dark turn in Unforgiven even more appealing.
but Unforgiven is a much tighter picture. I’ll take it any day.
Completely agree. Unforgiven is a much more complex movie, IMO. Better written and executed. I like OJW, but it’s lightweight by comparison to Unforgiven.

I immediately liked Josey Wales although Sondra Locke could have been left out! I was much more reserved on Unforgiven. Thought Unforgiven as a bit patch worky. Didn't think it flowed well. The Schofield Kid wanting to be a killer, the shooting of the slasher, killing Ned...some of the story lines didn't seem to blend well. They were all integral to the plot without doubt, but started out balky.
Once Ned was killed and Munny got shit faced and turned pure evil, it really became great. Little Bill shining on Beauchamp, showing what a bully he was...
Guess it is like preferring Pistachio to Butter Pecan ice cream....(well if you like those)
Yes, great movie that I like more each time I see it.
But, that does sound like it would have worked. I like the writer's explanation, that his lying about killing show's his embarrassment over what he did.
so I'm probably biased since it's one of my favorite movies, but I think Clint's ending accomplishes the same thing the writer was going for with the documented final scene.
And 30 years? holy shit. how is Unforgiven 30 years old?

I know. I remember when it came out and the talk about how an over the hill Eastwood was making another western and could he pull it off? And here we are 30 years later and he’s still making movies that he’s starring in!

Couldn’t have said it better. Unforgiven is flawless. Hard to top it.

I disagree. The movie works best with him leaving the town in a rainstorm after the killings, rather than another scene at the end.
One of my favorites and I'll probably butcher this, but...
"Hell of a thing killing a man, you take away everything he's got and everything he'll ever have."
*BAM*
