Megill and Smith. Tylor looks liek he'll be back at the end of this month. Any news on Drew Smith's progress? Fair point the other night btw about him pitching hurt on our game thread.
Agreed. I'm REALLY looking forward to Jake's start on Sunday. Will they up his pitch limit form 75-80? I'm assuming so. Guessing it'll be 85-90 maybe? Is that too much?

Our August is difficult though. The only games that are gonna be "easy" (I hate to say that) are the 3 against Cincy coming up at home (8/8 - 8/10) and the 4 against the Rockies also at home (8/25 - 8/28).
to replace J Rod and Hunter. Pen will be locked and loaded then. I actually could see Megill emerging as the 8th inning guy in the postseason.
Lastly, I think you have to call up Alvarez on August 31st so he's at least eligible for the postseason. His season ends in AAA in September anyway and I think if he finishes hot, you gotta carry him, even if only on the bench.
Playing the Braves 9 games. Before you know it, the Mets will be down in the ATL for 4 (8/15 - 8/18). We've also got the Phils for 7 games, with 3 at home and 4 in Philly.
Add to that two against the the teams with two best records in MLB: two games vs. the Dodgers at Citi & two more games against the Prison Stripers in the BX.

Good points. When do we get Smith back again?

We'll need Trevor Williams then to be ready to come in that case possibly as early as the 4th/5th. The later the better of course if long relief is needed.

He very likely threw an extra 15 pitches or so on the side after the game. He was on an innings/pitch count last game. It was 75 or 5 innings, whichever came first.
I notice there what I always seem to notice this entire season from Braves fans. They think the Mets are an average team that gets lucky.
And it seems to me this is mostly based on the fact that the Mets score runs and win games in what is now considered non-traditional ways in modern baseball. That fanbase can't seem to wrap their head around the fact, that yes, you can win and be a first place team without mashing 5 homeruns a game.
is really good, this is a tougher match up for Mets. He struck out 13 against the Phillies in 6+ in his last start. His fastball was hitting 100.
Yup, Strider's first and only start against this year, 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 8 Ks. 13.8 K/9 this year so far. He's an incredible talent. Really happy we have Jake up against him, even if it's unlikely he goes 7.
Let's just sweep the series. That's not being greedy, right?
I have to believe most of their takes are based on Chip Carey who is the WORST announcer in all of MLB - he calls the Braves WE and whenever another team does well says its luck or the Braves being unlucky. I have to suffer through that guy thanks to MLB blackout rules -
And that's just what this BB talks about - how the Mets are lucky- and to Z's point - it WAS fun

A lot of announcers around the league are like this..
Gary/Keith/Ron are an exception to the rule.
Yes, they root for the Mets. But they are not "homers". They criticize the Mets when they should, and they applaud the opponent when credit is due.
Example from just last night: They did not like bringing Diaz out for 2 innings and they let it be known
ended up being a trash human (and I LOVE Keth Hernandez) but I didn't like the way he openly disliked Reyes (in part allowing his personal bad relationship bleed into his coverage), overall the Mets booth is incredible. Not a huge fan of the SNY in-studio talent, however.
After the updated Givens addition. Only the Braves have better. Link - ( New Window )
by that metric it’s almost entirely Diaz. They actually have Givens as 0 fwar so he doesn’t even factor in. The other 4 net positives they have are ottavino at .2 and lugo, may, joely at .1. So that metric is saying the Mets bp is better than the padres by joely.
If Diaz keeps pitching the way he is that’s the most important factor by a large margin - so the ranking isn’t wrong. It’s just a lot on 1 player and there’s no rule they couldn’t have added someone with more closing exp to take some of that load off.
In light of the relief situation here’s a timely article
Other than vets who get released this might be the most intriguing section. Anyone have a matt hall scouting report?
Quote:
4. Scour the Independent Leagues
Roll your eyes all you want, but the Atlantic League, Frontier League and American Association (among other indie circuits) are all teeming with former big leaguers. Need a speedy fourth outfielder who can provide some late-game defense and baserunning during September roster expansion? A platoon bat off the bench? An extra southpaw to stash in the bullpen? There will be experienced names to consider.
Matt Adams has 21 homers in 306 plate appearances with the Kansas City Monarchs. His teammate, former Tigers/Red Sox lefty Matt Hall, has a 1.24 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 51 innings. Fellow lefty Tyler Webb has had similar success with the Long Island Ducks.
Granted, teams aren’t likely to find a true impact player on the indie scene, but then again, people cracked jokes when the 2015 Red Sox signed then-35-year-old Ducks lefty Rich Hill. Seven years, 737 Major League innings and nearly $70MM later, Hill has the last laugh.

I feel your pain, a little, bc of the MLB blackout rules, I have to watch the Marlins broadcast whenever they play them. They're not terrible, they're actually pretty complimentary of the Mets this year, but I'd rather listen to Gary, Keith and Ron. Guess I'm glad I don't have to listen to Chip Carey.

Hall used to be with Boston. He's a slop thrower. If that's changed I wouldn't know.

Me too. I'm in FL also, and I have to listen/watch The Marlin's broadcast. I loved Vin Scully, and I liked Lindsay Nelson, Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy, but I think Gary et al. are the best ever. Chip Caray is awful, in my opinion.
Or does Chip Cary call all the Braves by their first names during the broadcast. Atlanta blacks out MLB in South Carolina. He is the worst homer in all of sports.
I'm gonna be a nervous wreck by Sun night.
Loving the pinching match ups rest of the way.
He was in trouble!! Lol.. I think he was gassed

I’m looking forward to getting Ruf into a game with a lefty coming up.

Was thinking the same about Diaz. Definitely a simulation of sorts and a test of his limits.
Good point about Ruf against the lefty Fried on Saturday in the first game of the Double Header.

Good catch by SNY camera crew
Thanks. Was reading through it. These Bravos fans are in denial, but some understand the reality: the Mets' roster is stacked and better than theirs.

Walker was in the dugout asking if Diaz was going to pitch the 9th.
Good catch by SNY camera crew
The best part of that sequence was Keith or Ron saying that Walker is saying "wait a minute, I wanted Diaz for my start tomorrow night"

Replying to
@PhotobombChamp
Diaz is 28. You want me to sign him for life . He might live to 100 . This could be really expensive
This won't be easy. I'd sign up right now for taking 2/4 and leaving up 4.5 ahead.
Game today is pretty huge!
CRAZY stat is that the Braves have still not lost more than 2 games in a row this year.
They have lost their last 2, so Mets have a chance to make Braves last team in the Majors to lose 3 straight tonight.
