Havent really paid miuch attention lately, but has there been any word on Nick Gates's status for this season? Is there a chance he plays this year? After such a gruesome injury, not really expecting to see him much if at all this year
Ahead of schedule. There is optimism that he might make it all the way back and actually play this year. Daboll talked about how hard he is working a little while ago.
Jordan Raanan wrote about this in a story recently.
"When I got here, I was just worried about his quality of life," first-year GM Joe Schoen said of Gates. "The fact that he is where he is and may be able to play in the preseason is amazing. Credit to the kid. He's been working his butt off."
Now, maybe this is just fluff and nothing substantial, but the fact that it was even said by Schoen is a credit to Gates.

Do they really think he might play in the preseason? That seems pretty ambitious, no? I was under the impression that he's still quite a ways away.
Great story if Gates can make it all the way back...at any point.
NOT an ACL. Supposedly, the injury is healed and he’s putting weight back on, re- building his strength and ramping up activity. I think it’s very likely he contributes this year.

It's more than just a standard break. His tibia was shattered into 3 pieces and his fibula broke, too. His leg basically shattered.
If it was just a typical broken bone, he would have been back long ago. It's more complex.
While the bony damage is extensive, we have no idea how much soft
tissue injury there was and that can be repaired if at all. So it’s not just an extensive broken tibia/fibula, but the soft tissue injury which is probably determinative.
I will hate to hear from the medical staff. But this is not to take anything away from Gates determination, dedication, and ability to work through pain. Hopefully he will return to a useful lower extremity, playing at all anytime is a bonus.

If he plays before week 10, I'd be flabbergasted.
